The thing about writing stuff down on paper, whether it be a shopping list or a notebook, is that you're far more likely to actually remember the gist of that information when you walk into the grocery store and realize you have left the shopping list on the kitchen counter.

Could some one please put an amp on the market with a fender deluxe preamp and a Marshall dsl 40 output and a tube rectifier thats built properly and you don't have to sell the house to own. The Radiotron Designer's Handbook will make your head swim with a ton of math formulas. My recommendations for two good starter books are "Inside Tube Amps" by Dan Torres, and "The Tube Amp Workbook" by Dave Funk. Each book covers important topics that the other one doesnt; and the chapter in the Funk book on grounding and safety considerations could save your life. Also, get a couple of RCA Tube Manuals. Tube Lore by Ludwell Sibley might also be handy because it gives a capsule description of virtually every tube ever manufactured.

In regard to shortages....just like the hop shortage. The big boys like Budweiser, etc. get first dibs. Then Micro brewery's, craft breweries, etc. and on the bottom is the Home Brewer! With deeper pockets comes...Leverage in the market.

I was that kid who always made a racket on the super strats in the pedal/amp section. looking forward to watching the episode with you and marty!!

I don’t have power tubes, but I inherited a cool stash of preamp tubes, from a 60’s era shop that closed, some NOS. I’ve got a few tube amps, so I’m keeping them, real Mullard ecc83’s !🙂

Yes good show, these details are fascinating, even to just a lover of tube amps. Maybe a subject you could cover is why some techs hate to work on Mesa Boogie amps…….design or implementation? I sure like mine, 2016 to now, 5,000 hours or so at pretty low volume (90Db) but it sure looks cramped in there (mark 5:25), should I be thinking about preamp tubes or a checkup?

I think I'm learning some things from watching Lyle. I do need to take a couple of amps to him.

Regarding damage to amps- one of the bad things you can do is to not play the amp/not power it on for a really long time.

I had a friend who had a 80’s V4 Ampeg…..he used it daily for years to power a subwoofer, left it on for a week. Later we moved it, 1 power tube fell out of its base NO solder, …..vaporized. He doesn’t know how they work, it was red plating for days I bet….. but knowing Ampeg, it probably will work again with some work, but damn do V4’s run hot, I’ve got an older 60’s V-4 (2 prong auxiliary power outlet) 2 wire input power cord. I could use it as a heater…literally

I'm very surprised to hear what Dave said about the Marshall Studio series amps. Most amps techs, Lyle included have not had good things to say about those particular amps.

Had an amp, and old 80 watt Sunn had 1 6550 and one KT-88? I was clueless until long after the amp died, from being dropped, it was supposed to have 2 KT-88’s Ummm both pentode power tubes with same pin config?, I’m familiar from watching….but I’m no tech…

Yeah, I try to play at about 85 Db, too quiet for a 20 watt amp, so I use tons of pre amp gain, and compression. It’s not a sound that will travel well at 25 watts vs 10watt (A MB 5:25) class A nor would it record so well. But it has the feel I like…..

6v6’s? The owner should just get a hold of some old Phillips metal base… maybe RCA horse shoe getter for Fender amps… job done.
