What a character, great episode. I saw Billy Idol a couple of years ago, it's up there with the best gigs I've been too. Billy was amazing & the band were on fire & puts some younger bands to shame.
That description of finally playing through an amp that captures your picking techniques and Muting styles come to life in a Live situation, must be very special indeed. Especially when You know what you know, and you know it needed to be up front and heard. Good on you for getting there and right on Dave Friedman...
One of the best interviews, not least because I wasn't expecting anything as I didn't know much about Billy but it transpired that he's a great person and a great advocate of expression.
Frankfurt airport. Argh. Back in 2016 I was on tour with a couple of bands who were friends as the merch guy. I was the only one who was held up at customs being asked 1000 questions. Everyone else had already gone through before me with no problem. I was eventually let through, but it was horrible. I had to search around to find the other guys afterwards. But it turned out to be a great tour and experience. It still impresses me that people recognized me from my band and I had to give autographs too. Even though I was only the merch guy on this one. I’ll never forget the experience at that airport.
I have 3 seagulls, lepoje, ana, they are a couple, and bane who eats from my hand. And rats whom i call " pavle" that is a serbian name. And there are 3-4 cats who eat from a can. I love them so. If you are absent im gonna feed them in a meantime.❤
I wasn’t too familiar with Billy M,but the Steve Jones and Mick Ronson references were super 70’s cool! Great devil may care attitude and humour and he knows great tone🎸😎
I would so love to hear Paul GIlbert play through any Friedman. Love his playing and personality but never a fan of his live guitar tone. All subjective. Our ears all hear things differently. Great show and another fun guest!
8:02....all in the hands. 15:00....he has no tone. Who is this handless guitarist you speak of? With this logic then anyone chasing tone is an idiot. There's a book called 'Tonechaser' about one of those poor schmucks that's constantly looking for tone. Your hands aid in sound. There's different muting and attack angles/pressure but the most significant thing to ones tone is gear. Heads, speakers, pups, strings and even picks. Ppl are gonna attack strings the way that comes natural. They're gonna use the picks that feel most comfortable. Once that's established then it's the gear that defines their tone. If this isn't the case why would anyone want to waste money on a Friedman amp? Just so they can keep the same tone they already have without the amp? Maybe this show should've only been 1 episode of about 10 seconds...... Tone, it's all in the hands. Goodbye
