I think that while having the guard rail flare away from vertical might look good you need to remember that the reason to have guard rails is to provide safety to those working on the upper deck. Having a flare will greatly hinder that ability of the guard rail to stop a person from going over the side. Another thing to think about is that you are maneuvering the boat to come alongside a jetty, vessel or other docking activity your bow will be into the structure you are docking to and a flared guard rail will either get damaged or damage the jetty or vessel you are berthing too. My recommendation is to keep the lines of the original bullworks.
@TR4zest
@TR4zest 9 месяцев назад
This. Totally this. I implore you both to talk to Alan Wilson. The images you showed of the sister boat he has worked on shows VERTICAL bulwarks. I have not disagreed with any decision that you, Gemma and Simon, have made before this one. I met you (Birmingham boat show last year), I am a minor patreon. I am committed to your cause, but that bulwark flare is wrong. In a rough sea, or anything approaching lively, anyone required to be on the fore deck is at risk because they have nothing to hold on to. The 80s version you refer to has the bulwarks more vertical at the bow. Also, apart from being lethal to crew on the foredeck, the bulwark will be vulnerable/dangerous as you pull into a berth or alongside another big boat or another big boat moves to manoevuer to berth next to Sarinda. Please think again. Love and peace.

Having owned and maintained a large boat myself in the past, I can appreciate the effort required to do what you do. Add to the normal boat work, is the difficulty of working on the water and dealing with the tides, the mud and logistics of getting materials tools to and removing scrap from the boat. It truly becomes a life’s work.

Another good reason for you doing the work on Sarinda where you are is that you have peace and quiet to get on with things. You can also do a lot of banging and making a lot of noise with power tools and there is practically no one around to complain. As soon as you move to a dock or a marina, you will forever be disturbed by a variety of people wanting to say hello and being curious as to what you are doing and about the ship itself. There will also likely be rules about when you can start work in the morning and by when you will need to put the power tools down again in the evening. Despite the disadvantages, I honestly think that you are in the best place possible.
@samphillips8322
@samphillips8322 9 месяцев назад
The USN minesweepers I served on were larger vessels but wooden hulled and similar in construction. Those ships did not have bulwarks around the forward and mid-ship weather deck but the working area in the well deck aft had them to protect the crew handling the minesweeping gear. We had upright metal stanchions with life lines rigged forward and amid ship. The forward line handling crew usually got soaked when refueling at sea. With prevailing sea conditions around the UK I would want waist high bulwarks all around, but upright rather than flared around the forecastle. With much of a sea those bulwarks are likely to take a beating. Good that you are considering the structural integrity. BTW, you are an amazing team. Both of you have saltwater in your DNA....

Guys the top line is a lifeline, you grab it to stop from going over. Having it out so far is just dangerous you’ll be so off balance. My suggestion drag a line behind the boat, that way when you go over you can grab the line as the boat passes and haul yourself in.😉

Your commitment to viewing yourselves as caretakers of an important piece of nautical history is so close to my heart. 7 years ago I bought a small old sailboat on the cheap with the view to being its curator and giving it life forward for me and others to enjoy. In my youth, I did the same with my father with old MG's. Saving the past for the future is so important and teaches us that the time and effort to preserve and recycle is so much better than just buying new. The costs at the end of the day are probably similar - well probably more for preserving an aging craft - but you and I know that the pride of reviving an old vessel far outweighs the cost. Soldier on. James

I mentioned before that when you first bought the boat I was incredulous. I thought there was no way that you could have known what you’d gotten yourselves in to. I thought you would give up or do a very shoddy job of fixing it. I also posted later that I was so impressed with the quality of work you were doing and that I was very happy that I was wrong about it all. Okay, so you now you say that you were naive and that you have spent many times the money you thought you were going to. I think that’s great too. None of my projects are as cheap and easy as I thought they were going to be. NONE of them. So, if you’ll excuse the pun, I am pleased that we are in the same boat. Your efforts and successes are so commendable. You guys just keep plugging along and I am so impressed. Keep on keeping on you guys. I love you both. You are good, solid, hardworking people in a world that desperately needs more of your kind. Cheers from across the pond in Oregon!

Just like to add....know how you feel! I too have a historic wooden boat that I love and maintain....she also lives in the open (in the South of England). Unfortunately it's just that time of year, everything seems hard graft, batteries fail, decks leak and its impossible to cut/coat/seal because everything is so damp. English weather eh! I wouldn't be without my old boat, we've had her 10 years and she has repaid us many times over for every bleeding knuckle and splinter. Like Sarinda, she is full of the spirit of every person that has ever been on board - bilges on old boats smell of blood and rust (and stuff) for a reason! You are doing incredibly well, you are switching to the inside stuff and a few bright frosty mornings will soon be along. Like you (both) I am task driven and always feel a dip in spirits for a few weeks as it gets darker and harder. Make yourself a cosy corner, put on the Longest Day and smell that smell....we are very lucky to have them!

Tips for when you build the workshop at home, 1) build the slab at the same level as the floor outside so you can wheel equipment in and out and put the timber frame on 2 causes of bricks 2) put all the heavy tools on wheels and use them in the garden 3) make the roof out of GRP skylight, this allows you to see very well and can't be underestimated 4) make the workbenches the same height as all the table saws ect 5) look for building sites coming to the finish for plywood that they have used as outside fencing.

OMG Simon is a hero jumping in that cold water first to pull the boat, next to save a small ladder, I loved the Q&A, loads of it we already knew but also some new stuff. I didn't see the aft cabin yet, it does look very bad, but the whole ship was like that so no man overboard ;-) Keeping the boat after it's finished, I think most money would go into harbor money and stuff like that, just sail away and get to better grounds with cheaper fuel ;-) I totally love you 2, great to see you working together and the way you interact with us and often with the cam. Proud of you both wooden boats of that era is historically great specially of her time in WW2 she's one of noot many still going, good idea would be to get some more help onboard even if they could stay onboard. Great to see your still going.

In regards to the bulwarks of the aft deck, I'd bump it up to be the same height as the side and fore deck when walking. This would be for safety reasons. And, it should not look too odd from the side, being raised up. As you pointed out, the aft cabin needs a lot of work. But, as long as it is still reasonably structurally sound, I agree that finishing the fore & side decks, plus the rooms below should come first. However, I do want to suggest that instead of replacing the aft cabin's hull extension with more plywood, use double diagonal plank extensions. Unfortunately more work. Yet it would likely be both stronger and last longer. Don't forget to update your Amazon wish list, it is getting a bit sparse... so I sent via Ko-Fi, (Katy S.).

Regarding your answer about youtube channels that you watch, I think Travels with Geordie might be one you would find interesting. He is working on a couple of wooden boats (much smaller scale compared to yours!) and has dealt with lots of issues like yours, for example redoing a deck, planking drying out, and working on the boat while on the water. Is paper towel really the only thing on your wish list?
