Bypass filters. Yes it’s my cracked record but they worked amazingly well when we added them to mobile earth moving plant during 1980s. We chickened out after extending the oil change hours by 10x. The oil still tested perfectly good but we decided to change in anyway.

Well done you two! As a diesel mechanic who has worked on Cats before, it's good to see that you opted to change the oil as well as the filters. Prelubing the filters is a good decision and will keep the bearings oiled on the first startup. I'd have filled the fuel filters as well. It would have saved you time pumping the hand primer. I've changed many filters on Cats and have NEVER seen a filter that dirty! I serviced a fleet of trucks that used Cat engines, so I've seen my share. Also, the Baldwin filters you used for the fuel filters (B907) are very good filters and are a good substitute for the Cat filters. I've used them myself and found them to be one of the better filters. A check of the fuel injectors might solve the miss though after seeing that filter, would be a sound thing to do. If you do HAVE to replace one or more, I'd suggest getting remanufactured injectors from Cat to insure the best quality of the rebuild. I've been following your build for a while now and love the work you've done in the bow and can't wait to see your ship sail out of that mudhole!
@quarlow1215

Yeah that was a good call Gemma. Why spend that much on filters and then run dirty oil through them. I was yelling at Simon not to. Lol. I agree on the injectors. It very well could be that. I had that problem on my highway tractor and it was one of the injectors plug partially. Also look into having those air filters washed. It saves a ton of money and since it's not a high dust environment it may be a good option for you.

@wayne1959 Год назад
they sound great guys. There's 2 things i noticed today, and i mention them after 40+ years owning and operating caterpillar machinery, I noticed what i thought to be the port engine oil was grey looking in colour and I'm concerned you might have some coolant leaking into the sump. Cat engines along with Cummins ones are very susceptible to electrolysis through bad coolant condition and from having corroded fittings in the water system. The cyl liners are first to go as they are the highest friction points and are fully surrounded by coolant and this can allow small amounts to enter the sump by way of small pin sized corrosion holes that develop. If I'm wrong here, and i hope i am, i still strongly suggest you change and flush the engine coolants and recharge with mix to factory specs each couple of years. The second issue i saw was the black sludge in your fuel filters and there's little doubt that this is caused by diesel tank fungus. This menace grown in stationary fuel tanks usually right between the water and fuel line in old tanks that have attracted condensation over time and don't have motion to inhibit the growth. Its terrible rubbish for fuel systems right from the filters to the injectors and i was surprised that the engines weren't running a primary water separate filter then the secondary factory one because boats are notorious for having fungus troubles. There are several treatments available as additives to the tanks and a chat with some of your local trawlermen or machinery hire companies should steer you to something suitable for your local conditions. Sorry for the essay but i thought it important to mention just in case a small issue escalates into a major and expensive engine drama for my fav RU-vid boaties..

Old news now, but thirty odd years ago the entire fishing fleet broke down. The cause was fuel bug, so bad that filters were blocked solid after a few hours. The fuel company blamed something called Cat Cracking ??? and had engineers clean boats tanks fuel systems and in some cases have fuel pumps overhauled. We got over it in the end but it was a big problem. A few years back I discovered an interesting product, Texaco fuel addative. The difference with this one is it actually worked. At the time we were fishing in a way that was like a taxi run same every day. My fuel went from 200 ltrs a day to 150. It cost very little and unlike some you only needed a small amount.I bought all I could get, but suddenly it disappeared from sight never to be seen again. I supose when you sell fuel you dont want to stop people buying it. I tried others but waste of money.

Might be worth putting water separators in each fuel line. The suggestion on spare filters is a good idea. Our boat had twin RR eagles and in rough weather with the crap and water in the tanks stirred up, one engine would suffer from stavation and, nearly alway, the other would follow shortly after. These were new tank as well.

You two have just made my day. My husband and I sailed around the Atlantic for several years on two different sailboats. I had a special love for my 3 engines. One 2 cylinder generator, a 3 cylinder diesel and a 6 cylinder Lehman. I loved my time taking care of them. We had many adventures. Blocked fuel filters; injector pump failure which diluted the oil in the sump; am oil pressure plug that blew while motoring into Inverness. I caught the oil in a jug and kept pouring it back into the oil filler until we were able to stop. One thing I learned was you can never have too many filters of of any kind on board. Now, at 81, I am enjoying your rebuild of this beautiful lady. I love your posts and the humor and caring you both show for each other. Best wishes and all the success you need, from an old Sea Dog lady.😊

This is a feature many larger ships have and it saves injuries from happening when you are working around the engine while underway. Hi, I`ve worked on many diesels and the CATs are very rugged. However the smoke may just be down to dirty fuel or fuel bug. It may also be a sticking valve by the look of the oil it seemed like it had water contamination. This could be head gasket etc. I would before getting the spanners into it keep running them at least every week to see if you get any signs. This will also give them time to free of and burn off any condensation dribbling injectors etc. Another tip seeing as you have got plenty of time is the filters may stand a wash but make sure they are completely dry before re fitting. Oh another tip is get 25ltr of fresh diesel and put some good qualty 2 stroke oil in for a run up this will help free of and lub injector pump and injectors. It may smoke a little but should be ok but don`t over do the oil. I hope this helps.

I absolutely agree on this. Diesel's are made to be ran on a regular basis. If they sit for a long duration, one will get.oil burning, and fuel issues. However! About 99% of the time, one can clear this up with some.good duration running.

My recently rebuilt Fiat diesel had carbon clogged top end with oil control piston rings packed with carbon. However, the bores, pistons, bottom end and cam bearings are as good as new so all left unchanged. Its life was very careful driving with (thankfully) regular oil changes. The top end carbon clogging was biblical. Diesels need to be worked. Treat them right and all will be well.

As a mechanic of nearly 30 years I've done a bit of work on big diesels, in boats. I found when there is smoke and a slight misfire it's normally an injector issue, especially if they haven't been used much. It would be a good idea to remove all the injectors and send them off for refurbishment. You'll be amazed at what a difference it can make. You guys are doing an awesome job, keep up the good work.

Really recommend heavy dosing of your fuel tanks with Fuel Set. Fabulous stuff will really clean your fuel and the whole system, plus the injectors etc. I swear by it since it really cleaned up my tanks from a dose of the bug. Asa bonus, the engines run much cleaner as well.
@guy.h
@guy.h Год назад
I am always interested in what people who use these treatments think about where the bug/slime/water went ..... When you factor in the costs of these 'treatments', in many cases it's simply easier & cheaper to remove the fuel, discard any that's not perfect, clean the tanks & refill with clean
@Mark-jp9dz
@Mark-jp9dz Год назад
@@guy.h Cheaper to replace the fuel - You must be an American and or a sail boat guy with a little engine and a tiny tank. The tanks on an ML would have been huge. 1ltr of Fuel set costs about £50 direct from the company. It treats over 1000 US gallons. 500 gallons for a major dose to clean bad stuff. On mine it broke down the slime, and I think emulsified the water so that it all passed happily through the high pressure pumps and through the injectors. As a bonus, Fuel set also seems to act as a stabiliser for petrol and extend its life. When I originally checked, it was the only fuel supplement that was approved for use in Espar diesel heaters. Naming the engines...good stuff, its the heart of the boat. Oil totally needed changing but are you concerned it was so milky? Head gasket issue or water contaminated? Fuel tanks inspection might be fun, would expect diesel bug maybe? Keep up the great work

Soo much fun seeing you two work .. always funny, even in difficult moment's, making fun of each other in a nice way. That is a lot of oil, and it very much needed a refresher. But 50 liters is a lot .. also nice to see work on something else as the stringers and other wood stuff, good break to get your mind of it. Would be nice to clean the engine and give it a fresh paint, but that's the finishing touch stuff. Great to hear the engines running. Hole is usually it is the other way around ! As for the valve handle or switch I like the handle to indicate like flow in a pipe ie handle across the pipe indicates closed. In this case if the power went up a vertical line through the handle the handle in the horizontal position would be off and in the vertical position on. Just like a two way light switch up is on and down is off.

Big heavy aluminum filter plate is there for a reason - big filter full of oil plus engine vibrations mean things start moving and then break, much better than the old heavy steel plates. I'll go with others Cat rebuilt stuff is the best value in the long run those beautiful big engines aren't cheap. Good to see others having fun. Gemma may be onto something with the logo placement. Others may chime in but I think oil changes matter more than filters, in fact some filters rely on a little contamination to reach peak efficiency evening up flow across the whole filter surface area. The only engine I ever named was a workshop hog, on the third complete tear down I found the problem: a coin sized disc swarf that could flutter and block oil flow then the vacuum would pull it free before repeating. Very happy to finish the job and the main reason we switched to Cat.
