I think they'd beg to differ on that label, but I'm of the mind that if your not a shipwright when you buy a rotten old wooden boat, you sure as hell are by the time you finish the project. Two types of people own wooden boats. People who can afford to pay shipwrights and people who are prepared to learn how to be shipwrights.

Definitly you should varnish the deck beams when the time comes. A nice PU satin varnish will bring out the grain beautifully. PS Gemma, dont worry about the wind going in your ear, Its not going to come out the other side thankfully. Too much grey matter in the way. ! Pop a disposable ear plug in the ear thats to the windward side.

You can probably screw a few boards from the pilot house overhang down to the hull, where it can be spaced out with a block to allow recovering the open deck, then run a line at waist height to act as a safety rail. If the line seems too 'flimsy' you can always use some planks. It only has to cover the area your working on and can be moved as needed...

Enjoying the new video each Friday. a mantra for fear on those catwalks would be "a one hand for me, and one hand for the ship", ladders, catwalks and transport on scaffolding- saying drummed in by instructors in the Pacific Northwestern Canada
@TheByard
@TheByard 3 месяца назад
The saying goes way back in the UK's Merchant and Royal Navy and actually means both hands free, so don't carry anything. Which I can't fathom out as crews have to carry shells etc. to keep the ship armed up. I had an ex North Sea fisherman and Merchant Marine crew member aboard my boat for many years and he used the saying when ever coming aboard or when we moored up. We sailed up the East Coast of UK and he had been in every harbour between the Medway and the Humber that we called into or passed. He even had a seat in the House of Lords, no he wasn't a Lord but had the important job of adjusting the Tannoy speakers down if a Lord nodded off. Bill RIP you old sea dog.

Hi team, hard at it again, so good to watch first thing Saturday morning here in Australia. Gemma perhaps a Rosie the riveter look would suit you , hair tucked up in a brightly coloured scarf. I’m always thinking don’t let your beautiful hair get paint on it, don’t let it get dirty in the bilge, keep it away from that electric tool etc. Rosie the Riveter was the iconic symbol that raised the awareness of women’s involvement in the fabricating industries during WW2 . Mainly aircraft manufacturing. The work you both do is just amazing.

Hi folks, A suggestion -- rig up a semi-tight rope (probably 1/2 inch would work) to use as a temporary rail against the deck house so Gemma doesn't have to worry so much about falling over the side.... She can grab it and feel safer as she traverses the narrow bits of the deck by the deckhouse. Keep up the good work! Cheers from Oregon, USA, Phililp

Great work, guys! My beamshelves are some of the least rotten things along the shear of my decks. They're fir, and the boat was iron fastened. The iron fasteners and oak frames reacted and dissolved, but the fir (which lacks tannic acid) was left relatively intact.
