Today we do a review and tasting of Kavalan ex-Bourbon Whiskey and compare it to Kavalan Vinho Barrique and Glenrothes bourbon cask.
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

I would just like to take a small minute to say thank you guys for what you do for the craft. I have been batting the idea around with the warden to fly down to Austin and inquire about the class options. Well soon enough that day will come, but once again. Thank you for all the knowledge and humor you give me/us. Best wishes. Cheers.

Great to hear that you are making progress on the distillery. I have a friend who is working on starting his own distillery as well but he is working with the city to renovate a historical building for his location and he has been working to get things moving for a little over a year now. I wanted to let you guys know that over the labor day weekend I have introduced several friends to Ardbeg 10 which I recently bought to add to my collection and it is nearly gone already! I have pointed them to the channel for whiskey ideas as we have decided that we should work on getting together every few months to taste/discuss whiskey..

i forget what distillery it is but they offer a create your own whiskey program thing, i had an idea for a bad ass bourbon style whiskey, 51 percent corn, 9 percent peat smoked barley, then split the rest with rye and wheat. since you get to pick your ingredients at this place, id use canadian rye, water from kentucky since i hear they have a few really nice water sources, for the peat smoked grain probably go with something from scotland though not sure what region. for the yeast not sure, however use the lincoln county method(except reduce the amount of charcoal slightly instead of 10meters or whatever it is drop it to 6 or 7) for the barrels of course start with good old new char oak but go with a more canadian style barrel set up with a slightly less extreme char, age for 3 years, then flip it to a second barrel made of either hickory or maple. bottle at barrel proof. the idea is, alot of people dislike the sweetness alot of bourbons have as they just find it too sweet, same with some of the really high rye content whiskeys out there and spicyness. scotch can be really really smokey and nice but idk theres just something missing from them that a nice canadian whiskey or bourbon has, not saying they are superior just different. however i find you dont get that same smokeyness in other kinds of whiskey you find in scotch(or scotch style whiskeys) and that smokeyness can be very nice, i mean you get that kinda smokey wood taste but its not the same. so the idea is take the bourbon base, since its versatile i mean alot of candian whiskey is high in corn content. bring in that nice spiceyness from the rye and the smokeyness from scotch and it should be a nice balance, i think the wheat might help balance out the blend a little and really old school canadian whiskey used a mostly wheat mash with a bit of rye added and its legendary for being awesome so yeah why not experiment :P however maybe make it like a candian whiskey where it gets distilled separate then you can toy with exact blend and also with the filtering via lincoln county method for instance say the rye ends up being a bit too over powering you could filter it to mellow it like jack and george dickle do just a little until it gets that perfect flavor. or say the wheat doesnt work try the same with small amounts pre aging and post aging since canadian whiskey is aged with each grain in its own barrel then blended before bottling or a second aging. the hickory cask or maple cask for the second aging or finishing is due to it being kinda rare so id like to see what it brings to the table. the lighter char on the barrel to allow some of the grains to play out a bit more since some scotch fans dont like the new char barrel aging. might come out like shit but i think itd be a truely unique whiskey that combined elements of most of the different whiskeys around the world and hey if it came out nice order a second barrel and have them ship me it in the barrel and age it more myself and do some home blending so i dont have to distill anything but can still have my own whiskey. also doing it in the canadian distilling/blending and aging style means you could try a few different blends then potentially age some separate and some preblended to see how that impacts flavor. it also means you could try completely different blends like use the scotch grain as the base or the rye or wheat. might cost alot since itd work out to 4 barrels but meh thats alot of whiskey and alot of experimenting. also means i can try each grain on its own so scotch peat smokes grain aged in basically new char canadian rye barrels i doubt anyone has done that before :P if i ever get around to actually doing it ill for sure send you guys some samples for blending and of my own blends. but yeah if i do it i hope i get a nice sweet mapley smokey flavor with a bit of spiceyness and then super curious to see what else comes out. or hickory flavor but im leaning towards maple. or maybe try a half and half barrel though im assuming thatd be even harder then a regular hickory cask and ive heard that can be tricky to get the char right. as for aging location stuck with that one though if i get a batch still in the barrel then i know a perfect spot doesnt get too hot meaning i should be able to get a nice long age on it, percs of being in canada, though we do get decent summers but theyre short compared to some other places whiskey is made.

I just got back from Taiwan and tried both solist Vinho Barrique ($115USD) and ex-Bourbon single malt ($66USD) discount priced in Taiwan with Kavalan lifetime membership after I locally spent $240USD on their products. The the ex-bourbon single malt (diluted from single cask) is honey sweet with tropical fruit and IMHO a better value than the Vinho Barrique.

I'm relatively new to whiskey and i fell in love with Lagavulin. i have tasted and loved Johnnie walker black, Chivas regal 12, Jack Daniels honey, Jameson round (their deconstructed series) Glenfiddich 12 and monkey shoulders. In these, monkey shoulders was the only one where it was not to my liking. What should i taste next.

What is y'alls opinion on infused bourbon? I thought that they were all are meant for people who just want to mix it with coke or make a cocktail out of it, but then I was poured a glass of Virgil Kaine Ginger Infused Bourbon. It immediately didn't feel faked or mass produced with chemicals. It was natural, the ginger was present throughout but never over powering, the bourbon showed its profile through the ginger.

I tend to prefer them in cocktails. Not really my thing. But I do think they're being done really well these days for people who enjoy it.

My wife and I are currently planning our "getting out of student-loan debt" vacation. We have decided to take a week in Ireland followed by a week in Scotland, partially inspired by my love for whisky and our mutual love for the landscape and culture of the two. Have either of you been across the pond and visited distilleries in either country? Any particular distilleries you'd recommend whether you have or haven't gone?
@WhiskeyVault

We have quite a few sommeliers who have taken both of those trips. I'll ping them for info and mention it on the show!

Howdy fellas, love the content. Its been awesome to learn about something new like this. Im looking to get into the whiskeys, at least to try. My first experience was with Jameo and it was horrid, due to my own mistakes (freezer, and also being a bit younger). I have a coworker who is being the ultimate influence and allowing me to start down the path of Rex and is allowing me to mooch from him some of his Japanese Whisky collection (regular and special editions of hikibi 12, harmony (Master's select), 17 and 21, a few bottles of yama 12 and some a bottle of hakushu) as a way to gateway me into it. I understand that theres many different flavor profiles, but in the event i dont like any of that stuff, is there a logical next progression that youd recommend in terms of entry level stuff? I have seen the 10 entry level whiskys video, but i didnt know if there was something that made sense to do next, or just to wing it and pick something else.

Ah, I've a question, Summer has ended, so in Ireland we now experience the other three seasons; winter, winter and winter. That means it's now the period where it's acceptable to order hot whiskys whilst in a pub. Where do you stand on them? Never or with all the trimmings such as brown sugar, lemon and clove? Any particular whisky you would lean towards?
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 6 лет назад
The only time I've done all the trimmings is when I have a cold. And, I've found Auchentoshan 12 is my favorite for that!

Have you ever thought about doing something on 'High Commissioner'? It's ridiculously cheap where I live, but it generally gets very good reviews (much better than e.g. red label or J&B which generally end on 'drink on a pound of ice or with a quart of coke'). Maybe a comparison with another more pricy Loch Lomond or (or scotch in general) blend? I don't mind buying some more expensive bottles, but I like having some 'cheap' whiskey options for regular nights when I'm not in the mood for a beer and so I don't have to take so much care in the portioning haha. BTW, my 300$ shipment of whiskey should be coming in tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited.

A monocle walks into a bar. After a few drinks he starts to feel pretty good (and a little uncoordinated). He reaches for a cigarette, but the bartender stops him. "Sorry, buddy, but due to city ordinances we don't allow smoking in here. You'll have to step outside to smoke." So the monocle hops off the bar stool and grabs his cigarettes to head outside. Meanwhile a second monocle emerges from the bathroom. They bump into each other as they cross paths and fall to the floor, hopelessly entangled. They try to get free but the more they struggle, the more tangled they become. The bartender looks down on this travesty and shakes his head. "Hey you two!" he shouts. "Stop making spectacles of yourselves!"
