Over this past summer they made available a peated whisky at the distillery, and have since slowly started making it available beyond. Since I live here in Taiwan I have much easier access to their stuff, and I agree with Ralfy. What makes Kavalan stand out are the casks. It's good whisky, but mostly because of their casks. Also, I've got to agree with Welsh Toro, the hot weather speeds up shallow cask engagement, but is no replacement for the slow breakdown of complex compounds in the wood of the casks walls that takes years to happen and which is not really influenced by temperature or pressure. If you get a chance, please try the other whisky from Taiwan, the Omar. The ex-bourbon is the better of their 2 core expressions, in my humble opinion.

great points Daniel. A lot of people are trying to shortcut the time process, but you can't.

Kavalan is usually 5 years old, some are 7 or more but most are 5. Still have not gotten a Kavalan but if one shows up locally I do intend on getting my hands on it if I can.

Loved the story about the pistols - I had those! I can still remember the weight and feel of the die-cast pistols and the smell of the cap roll. I'd drive my Mum nuts leaving the torn-off strips from the caps all over the place. They were great for starting dry grass fires, yeah, less said about that... I also think it's a great tasting note for this whisky! Denim factory is a new one though!

Speaking of sherry, here in Denver I saw the Stranahan's Sherry Cask in the stores yesterday for the first time. I wish you would review it. I think it was $78 but I believe it will still go fast for the Holidays.

Great video guys, interesting to hear both thoughts, the whiskies which go into the creation of this are minimum of 4 years and oldest at 8 years tops. I think Bart would enjoy the Bourbon Oak, they do have a Peated which was released only 2 Years ago in the UK market but should be also available in the states. Slainte Guys

Thanks Jason! Beavor indicated he'd sent us a sample of it, but it must be in Barts samples or he possibly drank it already.

Not surprised that the oloroso gives dry notes, since oloroso itself is dry as a bone. PX is as sweet as one can get. :)

I think this stuff is aged 5 years. But don't hold me to that, it is just what I heard. I can definitely taste how young it is. I got Rum notes when I had it, almost like crossing a sherried scotch with Rum.
@ScotchTestDummies
@ScotchTestDummies 6 лет назад
The five years is pretty comparable to 10-12 Scotland years. Did you like this one?
@carscigarsscotchnwatches5158
@carscigarsscotchnwatches5158 6 лет назад
I did like it, but my taste goes Scotch, Japanese whisky, Irish whisky, Cognac, then Bourbon. So I think I am more use to this type of whisky than someone who is more of a Bourbon preference. I would rate this an 89. There are to many scotches that I prefer over this. Tomatin 18, Glendronach 18, Glengoyne 18, to name a few. All of those are at the same price level. I bought that kavalan for about $145 ish. Kinda pricey for a 5 year whisky. It should be more like 70 bucks in my opinion

Roy Roy, have you tried the cask strength ones? 56.3%.
@carscigarsscotchnwatches5158
@carscigarsscotchnwatches5158 6 лет назад
yes, I have. This is basically a watered down version of it. It is really good. I like both a lot. Much like other asian whiskies, I don't think they are worth the high price they fetch, but they are very good. Funny thing is I compared both to yamazaki 18. All had very similar notes, but of course the zaki 18 smoother.

Did I miss the "Is it worth it?" haha Here in Denver it is selling for 138 USD, and combining both points-of-view in yur review it doesn't sound like a "worth it" purchase.

Nice one boys. Really glad you reviewed this as it's been on my radar for quite a while. Kavalan bug me. Everyone wets their pants about them but I think they are too damn expensive. Yeah, 5 years is fifty years - bollocks. Amrut is a fraction of the price and you can't tell me Taiwan is hotter than India. It is an 'exclusive' malt. I just ordered a small sample of this and it's my first Kavalan. Well done Bart for telling it how it is. WT

OK, here's a new way of asking about enjoying whisky and what to buy... You're given no warning but you're told you're leaving in five minutes, heading for a wilderness camp in the Yukon where you're counting grizzly bears in the wild. On the way, the heli pilot says cabin is fully stocked with food, but he's gonna land at a liquor store and you're to buy the year's worth of whisky. As you're leaving your fellow STD buddy hands you some cash, saying "you're gonna need this buddy, good luck." You've got $1000. cash (and no need for money where you're going). Heli pilot says "hey, whatever you buy, it's just for you... other dude doesn't drink." OK, so $1000. and it's all you're going to have for a year. What do you buy? To make your money last, you're certainly not going to buy a Balvenie Tun 1509, and I also doubt you're going to buy only Jack Daniels. You have to do the most with that $1K, and this is all you'll have for a year. What do you buy? Cheers!
@ScotchTestDummies

I would buy a case of say Elijah Craig Small Batch, a case of Macallan 12, and one good bottle. Scott
@TheOriginalRaster
@TheOriginalRaster 6 лет назад
I'd do some rough calculations, something like this... 30% Old Pulteney 12, 30% Highland Park 12, a bottle of Glendronach 12, a Balvenie Doublewood, an Aberlour A'bunadh, and spend the remaining on Elijah Craig Small Batch (I'm totally agreeing with Scott, I'd have to bring at least one bottle of Elijah Craig, then make it last). I think with my formula I'd be able to get multiple bottles of Elijah Craig. What do you suppose Bart would buy? Cheers!

Bart, I paused the video about half way in, and there's something I feel compelled to mention... All of a sudden I notice your t-shirt "MY HUSBAND ROCKS!" I'm thinking nice wife bought Bart a gift... wait, ya know if someone clicked on this video and if they didn't know you guys... this starts to look like some kind of Social Statement.
