The only fiber glassing I did on Lazy Days refit was to make a two drip trays to fit under the twin engines to keep the bilges clean, these worked great. I would suggest you fit a drip strip under the ply sheets in the excess 100mm. to prevent rain water wicking it's way under the sheet, until you properly seal them to the outside hull timbers. The white underside looks great against the varnished beams, well done. Can't you use the block you use to drill up through the deck ply, turned the opposite way with a long drill steel through the already drilled hole to get the angle. Thanks for posting.

Simon if it were me I would do 1 of 3 things on those stanchions, 1 would be to use a tin of grey spray paint up the rectangle holes from underneath which would give exact dimensions for hole, then using a drill press with the correct angle using a square mortise bit to give holes in plywood, or 2 would be to find or make a square mortise bit long enough to reach up the holes from underneath, which allowing for available space may not be possible, or 3 line the hole from above with something like small tacks so when you lay the ply down you can see the hole imprint, you would then have to allow a few mm's for the position of the tacks, then using a square mortise bit cut the hole at the correct angle which should be no problem for a drill press with a movable angle base, best wishes Darren

G'day Crew, Cool episode guys , great to see the deck taking shape . Also loved the new knife ,Jem seemed happy with it too. Sorry about the SCORCHING HOT DAY , but here in OZ 24 / 26 is a beautiful day , we call 46 / 50 a scorcher. One more , Simon's second pronunciation of stanchion was right , as to be staunch or strong . That's what the Navy call them , but both terms do get used . However , I was wrong once before ,so a dictionary or thesaurus might be standard practice in this instance . Look forward to the next vid. Respect....!

For the stanchion holes, could you use a mortising chisel/drill? It should allow you to follow the profile of the side and get square corners.

For the holes for the bulwarks, cut some kingspan insulation and feed it through the existing holes the cut the end of it at the same angle as the deck when it comes through (before you fit ply). Cut and fit the ply then dip the end of the cut kingspan and dip it in wet paint, feed it through the holes and it’ll mark the under side of the ply exactly when you need to cut the holes out. Bit of a slow process but it’ll definitely work.

What you could try is supergluing finish nails (pointy side up) into each corner of the stanchions hole and put the plywood down. It will mark the corners underneath the plywood. You just have to make sure the nails stickup the same amount. Then you could take the nails out with some pliers.

I remember watching in horror when you first started in the bow locker area. Handfuls of rotten wood were being pulled out and me thinking, "surely this boat has past its restoration date". RE the stantion holes - I'd try cutting them roughly undersize from the holes you're already drilling, then grab a cheap wood saw and your angle grinder. cut a thin section out of the saw , about 12mm wide, something like a foot long with the teeth down one side. remove the teeth from the top 4 inches or so, and make a handle to fit that section. Leave the next 2 inches or so of teeth, that will actually do the cutting. then remove the teeth below that, to form a non cutting guide that will follow the holes "below deck". And saw away! I've often used hacksaw blades and a holder for the same kind of thing.

What you should do with a porous surface like ply is to pre-treat it with resin using a 10% acetone mix. This will sink into the ply and give you a good basis to apply the fibreglass.

Excellent , Fiberglass your deck time. Can I suggest the De Walt jigsaw as you already have the battery's and they are a great piece of kit. We had one in our Tool store before I retired and it was the most borrowed tool at the weekends. Some guys would 'Forget' to bring it back on Monday. Easy blade change and a lever underneath to adjust the base plate angle. Another thing that might be worth a look is the Trend Corner chisel. Its a right angle chisel for making nice square holes in doors for locks etc.

For us uninitiated people who have NEVER done any form of fiberglassing... what is the reason for the plastic sheet you put on top of the glass mesh ?? Is it SIMPLY to give the resin a smooth finish ? Or is it used for some other purposes also ?? CONGRATULATIONS ON THIS MILESTONE!! 😊

26c is a scorcher of a day? That's just a nice winters day here in Australia. A scorcher here is 46c - 47c, and hotter if you go a little inland. Funny how things like that change as you move around the globe. Well, enjoy your mild summer as we climb out of our winter with around 20c each day. Anyway, keep up the good work and all the best with the boat restoration and the rain. From Western Australia. :)

As an Australian it's rather amusing to see 26 degrees be considered as hot, 26 here is nigh on perfect, and I'd definitely fiberglass on such a day. Conversely our days are maxing out around 15 at the moment, and I'm holding off fiber-glassing on my boat because it's too cold! Tip, get the other kind of roller that has like rings going around, rather than the kind that have slats going across, far easier to roll out the resin and you'll end up having to use less resin.
