In this episode we tackle making some DIY pasture gate custom gate hinges made to weld on to steel posts. We have to convert steel gate hinges made for wood posts to work for steel posts. We make a simple flag hinge to weld up. Not everything goes super well and we have to modify our design a couple times.
Austin Ross • UPHILL WELDING PIPE GA...
Here on Blackacre Ranch we are city folk who moved to the country to start ranching bison (i.e. buffalo). We are a family with 6 kids. Our goals are to homestead the property, grow healthy food, and build good character along the way. We are new to homesteading and don't know much about it, but we are willing to share our struggles and journey as we learn how to homestead together. Think of this as homesteading for beginners where we are the beginners.
We are converting an old rundown church camp into a first generation ranch...profitable ranch that is. It's a whole new life and we are sharing it with you. We are prepping for larger animals such as bison, highland cattle, pigs and chickens.

Thanks for this incredibly relatable video. You absolutely do not give yourself enough credit. Don't get too frustrated. Later in life you'll be a hero when you give someone these tips so they don't make the same mistakes.

I'm here because I want to learn from others' lessons about allowing proper clearance and rotation before trying to design and build my gate (from antique iron grid, will open to my patio) and to select the type of hinge that will do the job. As a DIY myself, I know our mistakes are painful, so thank you for posting this and saving the rest of us time and effort. 🙏❤

When your welding slow down and it looks like your not moving at a constant pace watch your rod angle to your material and it looks like your doing crazy fast circles just go side to side slower watch your weld puddle and weld uphill on the gate hinges take your time to line everything up strait and just tack it and test it before you weld it in so all you have to do is grind the tacks out and move it all gates sag over time so always leave room also run 7018 it seems for me to be the easiest to run

Jeff, my two cents is add a extra chain latch on the gate at the entrance to the squeeze chute. It's a high pressure/stress area. Cross timbers bison "dunbar" completely destroyed a gate because it had only one chain latch.

That could be a good idea. Thanks

I feel you. I don't have buffalo, but I just posted a video on how I had to customize a "bulldog" type hinge bracket for the actuator on our chain link fence gate swing arm opener. Thanks for posting this video! I always like to see how people overcome these weird challenges.

I understand your frustration maybe later cut it all off and refab the gates. Because you'll never be happy with it. However I really applaud of you for doing it.

Thanks Paul. I'll let this ride for a while and see how it works and how annoyed I get with it. I may just redo it later if it really bothers me.

Good problem-solving. One would think you were a mechanical engineer or something :). You can always change things later if necessary.

Place a large washer between the pins, problem solved or you could grind off the excess flat bar. Thanks for Another Great Video.

All o can say is tack ot up good and chk your movement before you weld it solid . Save ya some hair loss later in life . And get a good welding cap you can turn and cover your ear when your on your side .

At my ranch I can give a flying f ck if it's not super leveled or off by an inch or 2 no one is there to judge you or your welds and it's been holding for over 15 years as long as it gets the job done. Real men.
@BlackacreRanch

Good point. I was told once, "if anyone complains at your welds they are free to come do it themselves. Otherwise shut up". If it holds, it holds. That is all that is super important with what I do.

Just get an auto-darkening lens to have in front of the camera lens to record your welding. Or take it out of an existing helmet.

I would put slam latches on all the gates
@BlackacreRanch
@BlackacreRanch 10 месяцев назад
I actually have them and have been hesitant to put them on. It could make it safer to operate and work the animals.
@BuccarooRanch

your other option was to use the wood hinges and just cut a hole on both sides of the post or drill through it then use the nuts and washers to create the offset and allow the gate to swing both ways.
@BlackacreRanch
@BlackacreRanch 10 месяцев назад
Thought of that. Just don't feel it would be strong enough to handle the bison. They get intense.

why did you do all that work you had a 1/4 inch weld to bust on that 1/2inch hinge strap and then you coulda slid it outward for what u needed instead of your jewelry you cobbled on?? you made it way too complicated i like the kiss theory!
