We dive deep this episode into what it takes to change motor mounts on a marine Diesel engine. Increased vibrations felt throughout the boat were a sign that the 44 year old mounts on our Bukh DV20 needed replaced. Katy heads off to work on Trio, and Andre helps me with the job. After a day of work we celebrate a job well done.
Winds in the anchorage pipe up and we decide to brave a dinghy ride to shore for respite. Katy and I find a beautiful part of Miami Beach called Espanola Way, and shower in the rain for some cold therapy to end the day.

Thanks for another entertaining episode. You guys are lucky to be traveling and hanging with trio. Watching your videos help me get by when I am not able to go to my boat!

Thank you for the kinds words again, Jarrod!! It is really great having trio to cruise with! We're glad to keep you entertained while away from your boat! ⛵️😊

Parker your videos on boat projects are the best. yo do a great explaining and filming is spot on! I feel like I could do this job now, except I do not know what you put on the threads when you had everything aligned?

Thank you so much! I believe I put a bit of grease or Tef-gel on them for antisieze. The nuts have lock washers so I didn’t have to worry about using something like that

Excellent video. I learned so much about inboard motors and the overall mounting and proper removal. Thanks.

Might want to consider an upgrade to a dripless stuffing box - pretty strong leakage flow there. Keeping salt water out of the bilge has a lot of benefits aside from reducing wear and tear on your bilge pumps.

I've heard mixed reviews about dripless stuffing boxes! I repacked the stuffing box before leaving Ashtabula, and always have aired on the side of more dripping (more cooling/lubrication) than less. Finally though, after changing the mounts and re-aligning the prop shaft with the transmission, I was able to adjust the stuffing box so that it doesn't drip while the shaft isn't spinning, and drips appropriately (about every 5 seconds) when it is. I installed a dripless with a friend on his boat a couple years ago and he likes it!

@@SailingSeawind My Seawind II (hull#2) has a Norscott dripless and it actually works very well. I lose a tiny bit of transmission oil from the lubricating oil reservoir over an extended period of running time - top it off at the end of the season. But I'd much rather have trace amounts of oil sling into the bilge than a steady drip of salt water.

I can't argue with that! Interesting about the oil supply from the transmission. Sounds like a good way to lubricate things and the absence of saltwater would be greatly beneficial all around. I'll have to look into it more down the road. Thanks!

@@SailingSeawind It has its own little oil reservoir - separate from the transmission. Yes, it is a good concept that actually has worked well in practice. Check out Norscot's website - many happy users.

Oh! I must have misread. I like the idea of that arrangement a lot! Ill definitely check out their website. Thank you!

My small boat only has an outboard so I have no knowledge of how a sailboat engine connects to the propeller but after seeing you change the engine mounts I wonder why boats don't use a Cardan shaft to connect the engine to the propeller. Do you know why?

I'm not sure what a Cardan shaft is! I've only ever seen a shaft exit through a stuffing box/cutlass bearing in anything similar to our boat.
