We spend 3 days soaking up the Nassau Vibe, provisioning, and buying pieces and parts for projects. Our time here is fast paced and reminds us of the familiar hustle and bustle of places we've been back at home.
With another North Atlantic system bearing down on us, forecasted to bring strong northeast and east winds for multiple days, we are in search of a more protected place to sit out the weather. Our friend Cally tips us off on a safe spot and so the next day we top up on fuel, and sail off for this new destination.
We beat our way upwind, making little progress over the many tacks we executed as we sailed around the west side of New Providence Island. We sharpen our skills with every maneuver and finally turn on the engine, making our way into safe harbor.

Katy is the epitome of sailing efficiency. I’ve never seen someone move that fast.

Your boat is probably one of the most seaworthy ever built, and you you the perfect setup, so no need to be anxious. The worst is to listen to other people making drama about conditions. Always, just follow your own path and mind.

Parker & Katie, Nice spirited sailing! Always exciting tacking ASW II in heavier conditions. When tacking try backwinding the staysail to bring (push) the bow about. Go ahead and set your sheets for the tack but don't release the windward sheet so quick. Expends less boat speed and requires less rudder deflection. Makes use of the cutaway forefoot on the keel. You two look to be gaining alot of confidence for future big water exploits! Fair Winds! PickPocket K14 ASW II

The helmsman can assist with the Genoa sheets. Putting too much work on Katie there.

Thank you Dale for the really great tips! We will try that next time we go sailing. You are right about putting too much work on Katy, she was tired after all that! We are becoming a great sailing team :) Thanks for watching our videos! Where is PickPocket located?

I know this episode was released months ago- but I'm of the belief its better to let you prop spin freely. The drag when the prop is locked is 3X the drag when spinning- the loss of speed is 1/2 knot at 4 knots or 0.75 at 6 knots.., that means getting to your destination 2 hours earlier on a 16 hour passage! I let my prop spin when sailing my 37' Tayana on Lake Michigan!

Really interesting Todd! I always thought that the gears wouldn't be lubricated while spinning freely because the engine isn't running. But come to think of it I think the Bukh transmission is a sling style sump where the bottom of the gears are in a pool of oil for lubrication. Maybe that would be the way to go! More wear and tear on the cutlass bearing and stuffing box though! The speed increase would be worth it though...

@@SailingSeawind- I have a Yanmar 33hp with 'Splash' lubrication on my Tayana 37' and haven't noticed any transmission wear. I check my dripless stuffing box each time I sail and take a dip to check my cutlass bearing monthly in the cold Lake Michigan water!

Great episode, in the Uk when preparing to tack we shout “ready about” , then when the crew have acknowledged and the helm is turned we shout “ Lee ho”.
