In this video, we build the tools needed to chainsaw mill some floorboards for the cabin.
This video is sponsored by Granberg International, the makers of the Alaskan Mill chainsaw mill. They have an incredible assortment of tools designed to turn your logs into lumber, beams, or live edge tabletops.
Check them out here,

when a person plants such a forest, something incomprehensible grows in you

Ordered a Granberg mill on April 1st. Can’t wait for it to arrive! With Corona making my work life impossible-I am heading to my cabin to mill lumber for a timber-frame shed. Fun to watch you using your mill! May the force be with you!

The small mil and the 36” make a nice combo... especially if you multiply saws to work with. Thanks for sharing! Enjoy your build!!
@TrustinTimber

Workshop at The Gardens yeah having two saws really helps because you get constant cuts since you’re not adjusting the height and gives the saws time to cool down.

Try as I may, I cannot predict what you are going to do. Loved the saw horses and how they were stabilized with 3 legs at angles ! When you cut the unit in half I still could not understand what they were. The sepia tone to the film so appealing.

@@TrustinTimber Yes part of the fun. When you were using the hand drill I thought Uh Oh he's drilling it crooked . The handle being smaller on one end was what I thought the demise. But No, You, know what you are doing ! PS I bought a little battery operated chain saw. It's not scary like the big ones the boys use. I have cleared some oak on my land and pretending to be Trustin Timber.

The way you have of leading us through the inside of things brings out the enchanting connections we have, still, with a natural world that's become remote for many. But you make it easy to recognize that movement, anywhere, done with contemplation, is how such connections can be made. Hand tools, and the natural world they sprang from, cannot be made obsolete. But using the advancements found in power tools is yet another level of nature transformed and held in our hands - metals and gas harnessed to achieve what our minds are gifted with imagining. By following nature, and carefully reflecting back while advancing toward the future, those most useful tools show how closely nature is still meshed within us. They animate and magnify our soul's instinct and ability to create, and that's some kind of wonderful magic. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures with us.

Yeah, there is beauty in tradition, and there is beauty modernization. I don't feel the need to pick one or the other when I can have the best of both.

These trees were all planted 37 years ago. This use to be an empty field. We're now selectively harvesting trees out, and letting nature bring in diversity and letting it become a natural forest.

What was your process for the wooden pilings for the foundation? How deep are they? They look charred, did you treat them any other way as well? Beautiful work, absolutely inspirational. And a beautifully made video as well.

Great video! How do you keep your chainsaw running fairly quickly through the log? Mine takes forever, even when sharp.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 4 года назад
I feel your pain, Michael. I did a lot of slow milling when I got started. I'm not sure of your saw or experience sharpening chains but once I got a more powerful chainsaw and got better at sharpening my chain the speed picked up. Also little things like the angle of cut, and other small technics you pick up over time help speed it up. But remember these are just pine and larch trees. Not hardwoods. Hardwoods take much longer. I often turn the chainsaw off and cool it down for periods of time when cutting hardwoods. Patience is just part of the process. Try to enjoy the breaks:)
@the1plantguy
@the1plantguy 4 года назад
Trustin Timber thanks! I have a Husqvarna 460 rancher saw. Very similar to yours I think. I am using a regular chain(not crosscut/milling) although I’ve used the milling chain and its even slower new out of the box. I do cut mostly hardwoods and up to and even including logs that are a couple inches larger than my bar length of 20”. Thats probably part of it too. Softer wood does cut faster for me but still seems excruciatingly slow. Lol. Nature of the beast I guess.
