These are the #10 (smaller of the two screws I used but plenty strong)

Here are the big screws I'm using for the beams but pay attention to all the sizing options and choose what is best for your project. I like to use the construction screws in 3/8 thickness for these big logs but 5/16 would probably do the job for most projects.

I’ve been following from the start of this build, and am Blown Away by the knowledge and skill you possess, as this is, or was not your chosen profession. The Undertaking of felling the standing trees, and Building a Cabin from your hand milled lumber, is in Itself an Absolutely Monumental Task, but to do it Mostly Alone, Mostly By Hand, with Near Perfect Mortise and Tenon joinery, and Meticulously Scribed Assembly and the Many Conquered Obstacles along the way, Speaks Volumes about Not Only Your Impeccable Skills, but Also Your Character, Strength, Tenacity, and Wisdom! Where does it all come from? Such a Smart, but Deep and Mysterious Soul…….. So Intriguing! Tell Us More! ☮️

some thing that might simplify your sawing is to get a Right handed saw (where you can see the blade without craning over the top of the saw). DeWalt makes a great worm drive/battery operated one. Also, if you watch barwood builders you might get a few tips about Post and Beam constructs, such as a "big beater" made from hardwood. Keep it up!

I love your thought process and the ancient wisdom you’re employing (even as you use modern tools.). In many ways I envy you as I sit in my suburban home wishing to be surrounded by more nature. One question about the flooring planks on second floor- you scribed them to fit tight against the outside walls. Will the moisture content be a problem when the humidity increases during spring-summer months when the boards expand? What moisture meter do you use? Thanks and blessings dad on your new baby.
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
From my experience this pine is so soft, boards so thick, the screws so strong and my scribe not perfect, over time it just expands and contracts and fits perfectly. I had scribed the floorboards on the main level the same way. They have sat in plenty of rain and all that has happened is they look better than the day I installed them. They expand only where there is no resistance.

Would it make sense to use a smaller shank size screw during the mock-up build? So in the final assembly, when you use the final size screw, the hole has meat left to grab?

I’m a former land developer. We often looked for land and if we liked it tried to get a written option to purchase with an agreement to have 6 months to a year to obtain financing… Once the option is in writing and officially notarized we began the development deal structuring that basically cut the land into puzzle pieces. This allowed us to sale or lease pieces to create cashflow to pay for the loan and/or to buy the property with others money while getting pieces for free…
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Sounds like a lot of paperwork. That is not my specialty:) I'm old fashion. Save cash, buy cash. Which I realize isn't the most strategic approach. Maybe I'll find someone to help us.

One question, since you do not own the land ,do you have or need a permit to cut and harvest your logs?😊 I think on the loft back wall I would have com up 2.0' So your back corner posts would have to be 2.0' taller.It would mean the pitch of the roof would not be as steep.

Curious how you’ll approach insulation. Will this cabin require chinking? I assume that would make it difficult or impossible to deconstruct. Anything you can share on this?
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
Yeah, That is why I'm doing the full scribe. I won't chink until its final location. I'll also put insulation between the logs when I set it up for good.

Boy a cordless jigsaw would have been handy for that scribing. Why couldn't you take 2 planks and temporarily screw them to the Ridge poles so that they stick above the poles and attach a pulley to each one then pull the Ridge beam up a little at a time going from one side to the other until you get it set up then remove the planks?
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 2 года назад
As for the cordless Jigsaw, yeah, would hvae been a good tool to have... but I'm just happy to have the circ saw and sander. I stated this cabin with neither. Would have done it all with an axe back in the day. I think I know what you mean with the ridge pole. That could work.

Hey mate. I know I arrive long after the battle is done, but... can't you organize a slow-buying process with the owner of the land ? Like give him 500$ every month for 20 years and in the end, the land will be yours (and if she/he dies, you will pay to his heir ? Or is it that this perticular land lacks some criterias of yours (easy car access, lake, flat...) ? First though when I saw you were dismantling the cabin was "omg why ? problems ?" then second though was "he is so brave, I wouldn't move a single screw" lol that's my lazy side, the darkest. Good luck with all that, let us know when you have found the cool place (like Dick Proenneke). Edit : cute babyyyyy :D
@TrustinTimber

@@TrustinTimber it's a pity, when you know clearly its a private land so, come on city lord, give us some air / space. Well, at least tell yourself it was a very cool and nice way to dry / season your wood before the real thing ha ha. Take care.

Because the government wants you to pay people tens of thousands of dollars just to make sure it's to code, and also tax you more heavily? I didn't watch the video, just guessing. Lots of tiny home builders on YT have to do that since posting. SUCKS ROYAL. Hope that's not the reason.
