EP. 3 - Installing Radial Airplane Motor in Volkswagen | Custom Fabricated Engine Cradle 

About 15 years ago I worked in Ford Motor Company's Product Development Center, which was adjacent to the styling center and prototype engineering. I was attending an employee car show and one of the prototype guys had a VW Bus (21 window) into which he had transplanted the drivetrain from a Taurus SHO. This was the original Yamaha V6 engine, modified to make around 250hp. The only way to tell this Bus was different was the slightly wider tires and lower stance, plus the cooling vents on the side and in the back were larger. It had air conditioning, regular-style heat and cruise control! THe larger vents were to provide airflow to 2 small radiators, one on each side in the read. Amazing!

I only just recently found your channel and I am immediately hooked. Several decades of experience has taught me that almost nothing beats your eye-crometer for good fair curves and fittings.

I worked with fabrication for 2 years, in a small shop in southern Brazil, where we used to make air intake, turbo piping, roll cages, oil res, fuel lines and other stuff for high performance drag and street cars. it was an universe I had no familiarity with, and fell in love with the fabrication processes. your shop took me right back to it, thanks a lot for sharing. i'll put it on my "great places i'd love to work" list!

The Engine to Tranny Adaptor by itself is a huge step to begin with. Somehow I missed how that came about, by I suspect Magic by Merlin' stopped by. I have to admit, seeing aircraft engine in micro view of title, and as Aircraft tech, I was hoping actual big bore, big stroke remanned out of spec engine from even the smaller 4 cyl 172 Cessna, or the larger 6 cyl options was used. They were the options I wanted to build some wild and crazy rides on two wheels. But this radial, even as 3 cylinder should have massive torque, and still be quite lightweight for a 2 liter. We're going to stick around to see this build take place regardless. Cheers and nicely done Captain. Great Tunes as well.

Nice work. Do you think it will impede airflow to the lower barrels? Actually, is airflow to the top barrel going to be an issue anyway? Maybe some ducts. An excuse for some shiny alloy fabrication.

Good job on the fab work Jordan, this should be a bit of a rocket when done and have pretty long legs with the Subi trans in it, I read these are liquid cooled engines so where's the rad going to end up underneath or at the back and did you receive the package? Cheers Greg

Cool engine! How are you solving the cooling? Is it purely aircooled you need to have a fan and some directed airflow!

I wonder how you will get this engine cool with much less air flow than with a moving plane and propeller.

Is this engine custom built for the vehicle weight? Normally piston aircraft engines have a narrow rpm area that they work in well, similar to a diesel. Then there's the cooling issue, normally the piston aircraft engine has a huge fan on it blowing a lot of cooling air over the cylinders. I can hardly wait to see what you have in mind for cooling ducting and fans.

Interesting, but the oil filter is in the worst place possible for any fitment, as it's a radial engine I'd be in cline to rotate it 180° or at least until the filter is just below horizontal.

How do you do the cooling? I'f got 1.6 singel port vw motor in my motor bike with no fan or plates on motor air stream is good for the cooling. That 3 cyl motor will loog good in my bike😂

Am I the only one who is wondering how the hell this thing will be cooled? What about when in traffic? That engine NEEDS forced air cooling across the cooling fins or it WILL burn up.
