FINALLY!! I am back on the house and making stuff happen. I have just finished the floors and boy do they look good!
If you know, you know: 🙌
Sorry for so much radio silence this year. It has been a big year with a few projects that have pulled me away from the house. Someone has to pay for my hardware bill.
Anyway, I am back to work and have just finished laying my floors. They came up even better than I imagined. Using thin offcuts from my windows I have created my own engineered flooring by direct sticking them the OSB. I used a flooring polyurethane to allow movement by also give great surface adhesion. I sanded it up then finished with Osmo PolyX hardwax oil. I wish the video did the oil justice. It has brought the gain of this Victorian Ash to life and makes it dance. It looks better than I ever imagined. And the best bit is, it works well with my removable floor panels. You can't even see the joins between the panels.
Next step is to start working on the lining of the house. I have picked up a pallet of birch plywood and now I start work on lining the interior.
Until next time, don't hate... educate, and go build cool stuff.

The knowledge and experience you're accumulating are absolute gold. Not to mention the results, which are incredible.

Gorge floor. Abaolutely glorious. So many "high end" builds are featuring horrible "wood" floors these days. And people just literally buy into it. You achieved great depth in your own engineered floor. Very satisfying.

Agree. It has some limitations such as seasonal movement but I like that. Real floors move. I was looking at some really expensive engineered floors with real timber tops and they were just too perfect... they looked fake. I also love that my entire floor is made of scraps from my windows.

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse I have 115yo fir floors (in my 115 yo house) in Colorado's very dry climate. You can imagine the movement! Mostly shrinking. There are gaps and nails sticking up sometimes that need to be tapped down. Boatloads of character. Too much character for many, but I just don't want to replace it, so I can't be a perfectionist about it. I have a crazy excess of area rugs protecting what's left of it. I had it sanded & refinished years ago and they said one more sanding would expose the tongue and groove. BUT there are none of those old growth fir trees left around here. The rich color is beyond the beyond. That's why I was so impressed with the depth of color you achieved. And as a LEED designer, I LOVE that it was made from your trim scraps!

Oh wow. That would be something. Hard that they are wearing out. I love the character of old flooring. Rustic is an aesthetic I've never been able to do. I block myself trying to perfect it. Well one day when you do have to replace it you should make some furniture with it. My favourite thing to make furniture from is recycled timber. In particular hardwoods but any. Blemishes, nail holes etc. I love the character. I love that is tells a story and lives a second life.

👐 The floor looks gorgeous Phil. Catching up and just watched your shower vid. Again, I love your details focussed exploration as you build both houses. You're creating what will no doubt be a stunning finish. As frustrating as some moments may have been for you, you'll only remember the pain of those moments if you're ever deciding what not to do because of what you're achieving everywhere else. That's my guess anyway.😉 I'm loving watching you build and explain so thanks for sharing!

🙌 thank you. Haha with time all the pain will fade and I'll just get to enjoy the fruits. Already I look at some things and go "wow I made that" and somehow the pain is what makes me appreciate it so much more. Thank you for following along, I truly appreciate it.

awesome job, most technical tiny house channel on youtube! I am planning to have a heated floor but after watching this video I wonder how to glue will react when heated up by the heating elements that I plan to put into the USB board (hydronic heating).
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
Ha thank you friend. Interesting. The glue should have rated working temperatures. If you use Sika I have found them incredible with product advice. Honestly their knowledge is as good as their products. Just reach out and ask the question

LOVE that color! not too orangy, or too red or too dark, just a shimmering golden brown. beautiful. the empty spaces are the kitchen cabinets and the bathroom? what kind of floor/walls are you putting in the bathroom?
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
Yep that's correct. I barely had enough timber. I'm still not sure about the bathroom. I may continue the Birch ply or continue the wet area panelling out of the shower into the rest of the bathroom. As for the floor I don't know yet. I'm still trying to work that out

That floor looks beautiful Phil and doing the brass strip really takes it up a notch. What was the name/code of the Sika glue you used to stick the planks down?
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
Thank you. Absolutely love how it's come up. The oil has really brought it to life and the brass works so well with it. It was SikaBond-T55j

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse I agree with using the oil over polyurethane in bringing out the best in the timber. And so much more practical from a maintenance point of view. Thanks for the adhesive info. 😀
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
Still makes me a little nervous given the doors open straight out to the outside with no cover but it's just such a better finish. Of course 👍
@leo169

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Those heavy traffic and exposed areas will need extra coats of oil. That is so easy to do though. You can always put a mat/rug/piece of carpet to protect by the door and catch any debris/water that gets brought in. Which would probably be done no matter how you finished the floor.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
The hardwax oil reaches saturation really quick. I was amazed how thin it goes on. But will definitely need more servicing in the traffic areas. But absolutely, it's very easy to maintain and can traffic really quickly. I'll likely do a matt or the likes
