●About this temple
The founder of Taizan-ji Temple, which is said to have attracted the devotion of successive emperors since the late Heian period, was Mano Choja of Bungo Province.
In the 2nd year of Yomei (586), when he was hit by wind and rain off the coast of Takahama on his way to Osaka, a wealthy man who escaped a shipwreck by praying to Kannon Bodhisattva carried building materials he had assembled in his own country as a thank you, and built a temple in one night. In 739, at the request of Emperor Shomu, Gyoki carved an eleven-faced Kannon and enshrined it as the principal image.
During the era of Emperor Koken (749-758), 66 temples were built and it became a magnificent temple with seven halls.
It is said that Daishi visited this temple during the Tencho era (824-833), but the temple fell into disrepair until it was rebuilt by the feudal lord, the Kono family, in 1305.
Ichibata Yakushi-do Hall, which can be seen about 200 meters ahead of the Sanmon Gate, is said to offer an offering with the character ``me'' or ``eye'' written in the same number as your age, and if you recite the mantra of Yakushi Nyorai, you will be cured of eye diseases. And
In addition, the stone foot stone on the left side of the shrine grounds is said to relieve suffering and sadness, turn calamity into bliss, and fulfill one's vows.
It is also said that if you wash the foundation stone of the three-storied pagoda that remains near the Daishi-do with a new turtle scrubbing brush, the pain of hemorrhoids will be relieved and completely cured.
There are also plenty of other things to see, such as the inner temple, Kotsu-an, a tea room with a ticket gate, and Kannon Kannon, a temple worshiped to pray for children.
It is a temple where there is a sad legend that two powerful suitors refused to yield to each other and dragged their daughter to her death.
●Point to watch around
・Main hall
The main hall, which is said to be the second oldest of the Shikoku sacred sites, is dedicated to Mano Choja, and a memorial service is held on March 18th every year.
・Bell Tower
The hall, which was rebuilt in the Edo period, is a beautiful curved building called Shogashi.
The mural depicts pictures of hell and paradise.
・turtle stone
It is said that in the past, there were large, medium and small stones that were used by young people to show off their strength during village festivals.
Currently, only the "middle" stone remains.
・Shotoku Taishido
Prince Shotoku, who once came to Iyo Province, had a connection with this temple.
The same statue of Prince Shotoku is enshrined in the Shotoku Taishi Hall/Yumeden in a corner of the precincts.

第５２番札所 太山寺
●寺の歴史/縁起
平安後期から歴代の天皇の帰依を集めたといわれる太山寺の創建者は、豊後国の真野長者
用明2年(586)、大阪に向う途中の高浜沖で風雨に襲われた時、観音菩薩に祈って海難を逃れた長者がその御礼として自国で木組した建材を運び、一夜で寺を建立したと伝えられている
天平11年(739)には、聖武天皇勅願により行基が十一面観音を刻んで本尊として安置した
孝謙天皇の時代(749～758)には66坊が建ち、七堂伽藍をもつ立派な寺となった
天長年間(824～833)に大師はこの寺を訪れたがその後、嘉元3年(1305)、領主河野家によって再建されるまでの間、寺は荒廃したという
山門から200mほど進むとみえる一畑薬師堂(いちばたやくしどう)は「め」または「目」の字を自分の歳の数だけ書いて供え、薬師如来の真言を唱えると眼病にごりやくがあるとか
また、境内左手にある仏足石は、苦しみや悲しみを解きほぐし、転禍私至福、緒願成就すると伝わる
また大師堂そばに残る三重塔の礎石を新しい亀の子たわしで洗うと、痔の痛みが和らぎ完治するという
ほかに奥の院、立札式の茶室･光津庵、子宝祈願の信仰を集める子授け観音などなど見所は尽きない
力自慢の二人の求婚者が互いに譲らず、娘を引っ張り合った末、死なせてしまったという悲しい伝説も残されている寺である
●見どころ
本堂ー四国霊場では二番目に古いといわれている本堂は、真野長者を祀り、毎年3月18日は供養祭が行われる
鐘楼堂(しょうろうどう)ー江戸時代に再建された堂は裃腰と呼ばれる曲線が美しい建物
壁画には地獄絵･極楽絵が描かれている
亀の石ー昔、村祭りの時に若者が力自慢をしたとつたわる大中小の石があったという
現在は「中」の石だけが残る
聖徳太子堂ーかつて伊予の国に来られた聖徳太子は、この寺と縁を結んだ
境内の一角にある聖徳太子堂･夢殿にあるのと同じ聖徳太子像が祀られている
