By empowering ADHD parents to have realistic expectations for ADHD child, Siope Kinikini shows families how they can heal and find success.
We know ADHD parents feel judged, isolated, frustrated, overwhelmed, and like they’ve failed their child. We know how desperately you want your child to be like others. No matter how you feel, remember you are not failing your child. Your stress, worry, and frustration is evidence that you want what is best for them.
Raising a child who has been diagnosed with ADHD requires you to make some adjustments. Having the same expectations for your ADHD child as you do for your other kids is just setting both of you up for failure. It’s normal to want your ADHD child to act, think, and behave a certain way, but the truth is they won’t. That disconnect between how you want them to act and how they act is where those feelings of isolation, frustration, and exhaustion come from.
As a parent, we all have unrealistic expectations for our kids, but we need to take a step back and realistic look at what our child can do based on their ability. A realistic expectation may be for our child to sit still for two or three minutes instead of 10 or 20. That way we don’t become all stressed out when they don’t achieve the unrealistic expectation because we understand what they can do and we’re already prepared to handle it.
We want you to have expectations, but have expectations that are focused on helping your child move forward and improve where they’re at. It’s meeting them at their level. We talked in greater detail about changing our thoughts in episode 1 and recommend you listen to it if you’re having trouble changing expectations for your ADHD child.
How to help a child with ADHD is to not compare them to other children. As you believe in them and meet them where they are at, you are giving them the tools they need to be successful. As they start to be more successful, you will feel less judged and frustrated. Changing your expectations for ADHD child will be one of the best things you can do.
