a friend of mine decanted some of the molotow chrome and sprayed it onto some plastic pieces and tested it after 1 day, 2 days then a week. after 1 day marks appeared, 2 days less marks but still some. but after a week no finger prints appeared only finger oil marks. having seen the results myself I highly recommend using this product for airbrushes but you must leave it a week before touching
I wanted to watch this episode for weeks now and just didn't have the time to do it earlier. I would only need that for the one car model I've got in my stash, but I wanted to know if the stuff is any good. Since you really test things thoroughly it was more informative than any other video on Liquid Chrome I watched before. I guess it'll do for my purpose, because I'll mainly need it for touch ups of the sprue gates, since the chrome parts are nickle plated and not the usual aluminum stuff. It might also work for chrome trim if I thin it down like you did and then try to brush paint the trim carfully. Very helpful video, Will, and worth the time watching it. Take care. Jens
I've bought this pen for this very purpose, as well, and I've gouged that the longer it sits untouched, it becomes more durable and reflective, with details becoming more noticeable. If you decide to try this again, test it and allow it to dry for, unfortunately, week ma couple weeks. It's unconventional, but that's my take on it so far. I like that it looks like it can be thinned down without loss of reflectivity. :)
Apparently you can speed up the curing with a hair dryer gently frequently once its dry over 3 days. Reducing the cure time down... otherwise people say leave it 2 weeks!
Most interesting as always Will. Your experiments are costing you dearly but I'm sure that you will be saving some modellers money. Your'e a hero! ☺ Keep up the good work.
Hello...Have you found refills yet and if so how much and where? Blick is saying they are going to have it by the end of the month. Also when I do Alclad I spray a gloss black enamel on first and don't polish and spray the Alclad right over that...works great for me.
I had marked up a 2 inch test panel and chromed it with a 2mm marker. After letting it cure for about a week, I brushed on a light coat of Pledge floor wax and it's held up to touching without leaving prints or ghosting. Test your own perhaps with acryllic clear, light coat after several days.
Good experimentation!! What are your thoughts since?? I’ve seen those markers in Hobby Lobby & they’re expensive! It appears you can thin it down 50% & get twice as much while keeping the quality of shine. Thoughts?
I use Liqutex Varnish to cover when dry, it keeps a bright look and hardens the chrome paint, I haven't had much success with any other clear , left un-cleared the chrome effect will dull after touching it even when left dry for a few days.
Ordered this as the refill. I can't wait to play with it! ps: your voice is fantastic, it bounces between Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen, a fantastic mix 😅
Been playing a bit with this stuff- definitely have to lay it down wet, and let dry a MINIMUM of 72 hours. Alclad Klear Kote works the best so far. Future dulls it a bit.
I realize this comment is a couple years old, but was wondering if you know exactly which Alclad klear kote you used, i.e. 312, 131 etc. Thanks in advance for your time.
Refill is 32 cdn here, I think Green World may be better. I cut it with alcohol 99%. Maybe clear floor wax micro cloth buffed. Maybe wet sand 1500 to get the clear fuzz off paint surface or flood it? UV clear coat?
Thanks for the video. You've gone through the (nearly same) process I went through demoing the stuff. I had high hopes but even after waiting several days and touching the surface the stuff clouded over. So I am now in the process of looking into clear coats. Sad because as soon as you hit it with any of the clear coats I know of, your going to lose the luster. If I have to clear coat I am thinking of just going back to my favorite chrome paint (Mira-Chrome from Alsa). Nothing beats it IMHO.
Re-visited this video as I got a 30ml refill. To refill a pen do you unscrews that top part off and squirt into the back end?? There are no instructions with the refill. Lovely experiment Will.
If you accidentally drop alcohol on it while it’s drying you are done. How come no one did trial and error? For what you can top coat so Al cohol doesn’t affect it after cure if accidentally dropped on it when dry.
I haven't tried to find it here on RU-vid , But people do spray paint real world Cars & Motorcycles with chrome paint , Maybe you can get more info on it that way .
You can use mission model base paint like black and mission model has chrome paint that you airbrush over the base paint. Mission model paints is great paints.
Its a graffiti brand they also make a liquid chrome spray paint aswell im pretty sure. Only proboem is they havent brought out kiquid chrome refills like they have with other inks.
I ordered from dick blick once. A mark on the packing made it looks as if I ordered from dick lick. Mail lady looked at me funny when she gave it to me.
I have heard people are having great results covering the molotow with liquitex professional high gloss varnish. it protects the chrome while not affecting the look.edit. I have tested it, however was disappointed. I have then tested covering molotow with alclad 2 alc-600 aqua gloss and success, the chrome is great and protected.
Mr metal color Dark Iron(buffable) the medium and pigment are differen't to rest of range. If you play around with the mix of pigment to medium you can get a few different dark metal finish that look better than any other metallic. It seems to reflect to scale as well.Building armour with interiors its given me a range of dark metal finishes.
Hi Will, thank you for introducing with those pens. Those pen producers are pretty stupid if not aware that their pens will be disassembled by modelers to spray it :) It was interesting to learn that you can dissolve it with thinner and it give even better result. What I am thinking off how durable the paint would be after 24h. It looks like the paint I got from ARS chrome can and it was hard enough to touch after overnight... So, I wonder how this pen chrome will behave after one day or so... BTW, that dissolved chrome really reminds me Gunze SM08 paint, which is not bad at all.. but also does not like clear coats
Thanks alot for answer. Do you know any other sealer that is available in a spray can, one that would work with the liquid chrome without making it too dull?
yes, regularly clean your markers with water. the molotow paint is water based acrylic. it wont hurt. routinely clean your marker tips, and threads and valves in warm water to stop this, re assemble, refill ink and enjoy! for extremely dried tips i have used finger nail polish remover or acetone. also, always replace old/worn down tips. normally a good rinse will restore your tips to as good as new.
we would get boxes of those pens for writing on steel. they were disposable pens in every color. some how I found some in my lunch box when I got home. I used them for my art projects. we would place them on the ground and run them over with the fork lift.... messy. lol management didn't like that.
@@barpfoto You're taking an item and using it for an entirely different purpose than it was intended but expecting to get results that you desire. It rarely works that way. You are great at model work, so don't get me wrong. I am not criticizing you personally. It's just that this stuff is not going to be near as durable as enamel and of course you are going to lose detail in any case. The airbrush results when thinned were acceptable but what will it look like in a few months?
@@kdryan21 dude… it's been a while since I made this video but I'm pretty sure I'M not advocating any such thing. In fact, I completely agree with you. This stuff is garbage for anything other than details and parts that will be handled like… Never again. I've tested it extensively since this video was made and it sucks. but, lots of people are in denial. they think it's shiny and awesome and completely ignore how terrible it is in every other respect. Just read the comments on this video itself. lol
It looks great over bare white plastic, I'm uploading a video right now, check out the valve covers on my motor, and I cleared them with Future, but it does need to dry for 2 or 3 days, :) Tom
