Sailing away from Darwin means leaving Australia! Our destination is Kupang Indonesia, approximately 550miles away. I've taken 2 backpackers with me for this leg of the Mad Dash. It's their first ever sailing experience. See how they fare
We have a mixed bag of weather conditions.
Thanks for watching

It's interesting how you can pick up crew, just about anywhere, and it works out for both parties. Honestly, it's not too bright to jump overboard and swim away from the boat under sail. Live and learn. 👍 Thanks for sharing.

Seems like people always want to go somewhere and I've always been lucky I guess. I'd have just gone alone if no-one had been available.

This reminds me of reading about the early round the world single handed race where one of the competitors completely becalmed for several days went for a swim, he was about 100 meters from the boat when he realized that all his sails were still deployed and hanging limp, he said that he had never swam that fast in his life to get back onboard.

Yeah I wouldn't go 100m from the boat for sure. In this case one of us was always onboard and ready to motor back if needed. I have going swimming while solo but always drop the sails first and lay out a floating rope behind the boat.

It was I guess, always a pretty frustrating for me to motor though

Vernon, the comments are turned off on the video you made of Nico, so I'll post my comment here. Bless you forputting that video together. What an epic little big soul! And a beautiful connection you have with him. I couldn't stop smiling the whole time. Still am. I reckon you are going to be a wonderful father.

Thanks mate. Yeah me and Nico have a pretty special bond for sure. YT won’t allow comments on my video because they are protecting a minor apparently but they allow comments on the same video on Loic’s channel. The algorithm is so messed up.

Was it an option to reef the main in the strait there? Looked wild
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 8 месяцев назад
I thought about it. I was having to hand steer and bear away in the gusts and as my crew were absolute beginners and the passage had been mostly motoring I thought it safer to just furl the jib. Reefing is just reducing sail area and the jib would be about the equivalent of 2nd reef in the main. I knew that after about 2 miles we would be sheltered by the hills.
@sailorruss5279
@sailorruss5279 8 месяцев назад
@@SailingLearningByDoing yep, although I found my cat more balanced with a reefed main. Guess it depends on what boat also
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 8 месяцев назад
@@sailorruss5279 oh yeah of course, if I'd have ben looking at 10nm+ I'd have reefed the main and balanced it all up. It actually went pretty good on main alone though. Good to try these things out too

what visa are you using to get back in Indonesia , VOA 30 days ,or more ? and what what are you crew going to use ? Iwill be coming to Bali in Febuary 2024 , do you know where you might be then as I would love catch up with you and your new FAMILY even if it means a flight to one of the islands, cheers Alister inOZ.

Hi Alister. We all just got the VOA. I only needed 30 days as I was leaving for France. When we all go back we will have a 1 year Kitas visa. We hope/plan on going back to Lombok late January and will hang around Gili Asahan for a month or two so Marie and Eli can adapt to boat life. I think there is a daily fast boat that goes from serangan to Gili Gede if you wanted to come over. Hit me up by email. Info@vernondeck.com

vernon whats the general deal with crew and booze on passages? no beer, one beer, all the beer?
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 8 месяцев назад
We are all adults and can make decisions accordingly. if it's calm and the forecast looks mellow we'll have a beer at sunset.
