ESPN's Dan Orlovsky says Drake Maye shouldn't play right away in the NFL because of his poor footwork. That take sent Scott Zolak into an epic rant about the absurdity of sitting the 3rd pick in the #nfldraft.
Sorry Zo, the team needed to get their act together 2 years ago. Now they're in it for at least a 2 or 3 year rebuild. A franchise caliber QB is absolutely worth waiting a year for if that's what takes.
@@Mooseman327 He is not Sam Darnold....every qb expert that has evaluated him says that he has the highest upside out of the three qb's. So stop with this nonsense.
@@willthomas2310 I really don’t understand, Pat’s fan speak out of both sides of their mouth. This is the multi year rebuild. We need everything on the offense… but also, we don’t have time for any of that
Zo is on drugs. There's no problem with sitting whoever we take at 3 until they know hes ready. Draft a QB, develop him, build the roster. Its a couple year process at least, whether you sit the rookie or not. These guys can be real dorks.
Zo was a bad back up for a few years, and somehow that makes him an expert on everything. If they can land Russ, then Maye sitting for a year would make perfect sense.
The idea with taking someone with the 3rd overall pick is they are ready to play right away. The keyboard GMs that all of the sudden want Russell Wilsons sorry ass in this comment section is insane. You all want the name from 5-6 years ago.
@@ealbertson318 There's no sense in getting your rookie QB, who may not be ready, killed for an entire year behind a terrible OL and limited weapons just because you took him 3rd overall. The team isn't going to compete this year and the roster has more holes than swiss cheese.
@@ealbertson318 Carson Palmer was the number one pic he sat for the first year. Ended up being pretty good. Patrick Mahomes sat. It’s a good thing to do if you’re rebuilding your team.
@@1Learn2Swim3exactly. If we go out there and free agency and sign, some amazing guards to protect the young quarterback, then yeah, start him. Right now they don’t have that and he will just get sacked multiple times every game.
Agree with Zo. Don’t have time to wait. The Pats’ window on winning more than 4 games is closing. Can’t afford to keep the star-studded WR and OL groups (both top 4 in the division) together much longer.
Zo is way off on this. Rushing a guy who isn't ready is stupid, and breaks them. But it doesn't mean it's not the right pick. Just get a friggan bridge quarterback to keep the seat warm for him. Completely wrong in every way shape and form.
10 reasons im ok w drake maye at pick 3: 1. He had an 8.1% big time throw rate according to pff over past 2 seasons at UNC comps most similar to justin herbert 2. Hes elite protecting the ball from turnovers, (just 2.1% turnover rate over past 2 seasons) 3. Hes got the better frame at 6’5 230lbs than daniels and a stronger arm for cutting through windy conditions 4. While daniels has excellent deep ball accuracy maye has the stronger arm overall and can make pinpoint accurate throws while off his back foot or shovel the ball w left hand if necessary 5. Statistically Dominant on 1st and 2nd down which is a big indicator of qb success 6. He was not benefited by a scheme change in his second season at UNC as well as a much poorer offensive line than the other top qb prospects (lost josh downs and tez walker also missed half the season in 2023) 7. Shows excellent leadership qualities, has no off field issues we know of and impacts a room when entering it, had a good meeting w pats brass 8. Maye has a 92.7 passing grade without play action according to pff which also would be elite in the NFL 9. 1.26 wins above average, also elite 10. Maye forced 47 missed tackles and scored 16 rushing touchdowns over the past 2 seasons and demonstrates underrated rushing ability
@@dokedoker3340 im just glad we didnt get jj mccarthy. At least w maye there is hope for a better future, maybe it will take two years, thats not actually that long if we come out the other side as a contender
If you watched Orlaskys interview he said Maholmes and Allen had to fix their feet to. No one is questioning those picks. Zolak acts like he is on drugs half the time.
So with that being said Rodgers, Mahomes, Love and many others never should of been drafted because it was a waste to sit them? Doesn't matter where you pick your franchise QB as long as they become just that. If it means sitting them for a year from pick #3 or pick #199 what's the difference? You addressed the most important position in all of professional sports.
You missed his whole point. We don't have a Brett Favre, Alex Smith or Aaron Rodgers at QB already to have the luxury of drafting a guy at #3 and sitting him a year or 2 because we already have a solid QB winning games. We are in this situation because we don't.
Can’t wait to hear Zolak walk this back after the Patriots draft Drake Maye. This is a rebuild Scott, breathe. I’d much rather have two years worth of free agency, two drafts and a full year of the coaching staff coming together and before they throw him in there. I think the fans are more patient than you are.
Zo tripping on this one lol when people say “sit him” they mean for part of the season 6-10 games .. we forget they did the same thing with Patrick Mahomes
We don’t have the time? What? We are the worst team in the NFL… Time and money is the only thing we have. Also, can we force all these guy to actually watch at least the two QBs that the Pats are likely to draft? Nobody seem to have any ideal what these two QBs are all about. Especially Maye…
Zo's just pissed because the Pats aren't going to draft Harrison. And to do it, both these guys are just being silly. Drake Maye does drift on some dropbacks, but his feet aren't friggin horrible. His proven passing ability shows that. Maye is tough mentally and physically. He'll take the hit to allow his receiver to gain the most separation. He is a REALLY good runner and his pocket awareness is outstanding for someone coming into the NFL as a rookie. Drake has a great arm and can chuck the ball down the feel with ease. The guy had a "down year (for him) last year because his O-line was horrible, his targets from the previous year were in the NFL and it was a brand new offensive scheme. Yet, he still had a great year, statistically. He'll be polished up by whichever team drafts him. None of these rookies is perfect. This is just one career backup QB latching onto what a failed QB- turned expert said. Pathetic
Maye has bad feet, his placement is inconsistent and his judgement poor. He actually regressed in the latter two areas last year. He's raw and he may not pan out.
@ald7248 footwork and placement can be fixed. That's why QB coaches exist. Drake played in a new offensive scheme, behind a bad O-Line and his top weapons had gone to the NFL. I believe his 2022 season is a much better representation of where he is. Drake's Physical Traits, Toughness and inate talents can't be coached. The ONLY thing I don't look forward to is hearing "Yee-ahhh!" at the beginning of every answer for the next 10-15 years.
I am in love with Jaden and Drake. Patrick Mahomes sat for a year. Carson Palmer sat for a year. I want Jaden or Drake to sit for the first year. It’s a rebuild. We’re not winning the Super Bowl next year. We got plenty of time.
Is this a popular radio show in their area? Seems like Zolak just says the same thing 15x in a row, just wording it slightly differently to change it up smh
If you're not willing to give this team a year being mediocre or worse your expectations are outta whack. This offense has literally 0 star players. Drake Maye is too young and inexperienced to throw to the wolves and call a season a failure if you start him and win 4 games or less then blame him for not being the guy,
What a stupid take.....its not all or nothing. We should get the QB while we have the chance and sit him for a year....why put him in when he is not ready? let him learn, then he can take over when the offense is better and when he is ready.
Ugh! Send a rookie out with no number 1 receiver and no line. Great idea. Some people learn nothing. It's a rebuild genius. Let him sit and learn while we get more stuff to help him.
Hell yea if we don’t have the weapons based on how well he does in camp should tell you if he’s ready to play year 1 or not. There’s nothing wrong with sitting a qb for a year.
The fact that all these cynical "experts" are shitting on Maye the last 3 months makes me want NE to take him even more. Nobody has a crystal ball. QB is the hardest transition from college to pros in football. I honestly dont care if NE drafts a qb with the 3rd pick or not. I just want them to hit on as many picks as possible. We need help everywhere on offense
Couple things one No you take the guy with the high end talent. If he can be a top five guy in the league some day but it might take a couple years before he gets there who cares take that guy over the dude who can play today but won’t ever hit high end top five sort of play. Those are the guys who win and can give a franchise I long winning window. Ridiculous take
Zo, I totally agree with you and all these figure heads have their own opinions but in the end...none of you are left with making the decision. The decision that can make or break the franchise. We can't afford a regression right now. We have enough talent and a good recent history with the right moves we can be in the conversation. Nobody can predict the future but I do agree that you have to have conviction and a sound plan. Draft for need. Belichik has set us back. We won't know for a while how we did but this new regime has to know what they want and what they're able to execute. I like what they are doing so far so they can use the draft to weaponize the offense and add key positions. Top free agents cost too much and they may not be the guys you want. Trade up if a guy you want is gettable. We want quality not quantity. I like the top 3 QBs but if they drafted Harrison Jr. and Joe Milton I wouldn't complain. Draft 2 QBs. One would be an asset down the line. The QB you Draft should be relative to your situation. We're not used to the athletic running QB around here but it might be a necessary evil. Exciting football again here in New England 😊
If the bears take Williams1) Then the commanders are taking Jaylen Daniels 2. So my patriots should not just take Maye just because he is best quarterback left. In my opinion the patriots should draft Jayden Daniels or Marvin Harrison jr. And both players are taken trade back stock pile draft picks.
partially agree with Zo. "He's tall and has a great arm" is not a good enough reason to draft a guy at #3 overall. Tall/great arm describes dozen of QB busts over the last 10 years. I disagree in that, signing a bridge vetand sitting the rook, even if we take him at #3 might be the best way to go. And BTW, F%$k Dan Orlovsky.
This team isn't ready for a top QB. I don't think most people realize how bad we are on offense. If everything goes perfect in free agency and the draft, we are still short. We do not have one top flight NFL player at any position. We have positions that don't have legitimate NFL caliber players. If we draft a qb at three, it would be a good idea to get some vet to be the crash test dummy during 24. We're spoiled in NE, but it would probably be good if we were picking at 3 again next year.
Zo, you literally laughed at Josh Allen on the radio every time the Pats played the Bills for 2 years. Sometimes these QBs even at the top of the draft take time to develop. It's not a big deal if you sit him for 1/2 - 1 season if you feel like that's best for the team. With Maye it's the ceiling that's making him go top 3. You want a guy who can play day 1 take Penix later, but the reality is the guys with the ceiling go early.
It's the only reason JJ is even in the conversation. Every other QB out there has better tape than that kid but these scouts are in love with what he may be able to do in the future. Me personally, I want to see it to believe it first.
You need a DUDE at QB to compete with the freaks of the AFC! If you think Drake is that GUY then you take him. Look at the 49ers. Ultimate example of a team built from the ground with a serviceable qb against a DUDE in the superbowl. Id rather take a DUDE then build around as opposed to build first then hope to God you can find a qb with a heartbeat
Except that was an accident they went with qb first by trading for Jimmy G them traded up for Trey Lance. Those QB didn't work but the rest of their drafts and free agency was great.
This is the dumbest take I ever heard. You have plenty of time to sit this man. You’re in a rebuild. Don’t be ridiculous. But I do like Danielle’s better
Wow, thanks Scott. What a tremendous point. You are so right. Belichick got fired because he did not win enough and the Krafts wanted to be in on the fight for Super Bowls again. If the Pats don't love each of the 3 top QBs and their guy is not available at 3, pick Mike Harrison, Jr. and re-sign Bourne, re-sign Hunter Henry, get a good blocking full back and square away the O line and let Mac and Zappe fight it out to start. Matt Judon believes in Mac and Zappe. He told them to come back next year and elevate their game.
Dan wants drake to sit because he wants to protect him. It's his qb bias taking over. He's scared so he'd rather drake sit. You can't let these guys sit if you taking them top 10. Zolak is right
Couldn't agree more with Zo...Don't sit on the rookie contract. What is better for development than actual experience. Sitting a guy for 3-4 years is done. 1 year max but genuinely don't know what that will do for him as a football player, not playing football but watching it.
Go Scott! Caleb #1 -- Maye #22 -- LSU kid late first early second which is where he was early last season. Of course the NFL is desperate for QB's and of course they'll get snatched up in the top 3, but that doesn't mean they represent value. If you spend that pick on a bust, that might be two or three future starters you blew off paying too much for the next Mac Jones. Look at the Broncos. "Desperate times" call for stupid personnel moves. When was the last time the Bears had a decent QB? The Browns? Does Benji still play for the Steelers? Burrow was "worth" the first overall. JJ McCarthy in the first round!? Harbaugh wouldn't let him throw at Michigan. He was rated 52nd in the NCAA for pass attempts. Is that a vote of confidence? Zappe threw more passes and TD's in one year in NCAA history and he was 137th in the draft. The pick valuation number for Zappe "37.5"....Drake Maye pick valuation at #2 = "2600"....that's four or five second round picks. Stay calm now-let's rebuild the offense and figure how to block once in awhile....can only go up from here.
Am I the only one on planet fuckin earth that wants them to take MHJ, grab another WR or tackle with that second round pick, take a round 3 QB and just start Zappe? Like is Zappe that bad? I don’t understand it lol
I think the obvious problem here is that Patriots weren’t smart enough to hire Zolak as their head coach, and Beetle as head scout. Of course Felger should be gm, and Mazz would make a great water boy.🫏🤡
We all owe BB an apology it's kraft being so cheap for the reason why the talent is no longer on the roster. The media is praising the patriots' free agency signings. What have they done? They resigned players from a 4-13 team. Now we have a rookie coach they will be picking top 5 again next year. Jaden daniels is going to be a massive bust and let's stop thinking brissett is a good qb he stinks people he stinks.
