Drake Maye facing STRONG CRITICISM from Merril Hoge: Is it warranted?! | Get Up 

I don't know why analysts are so afraid to peg a player as a bust. Historically speaking, there are more busts than hits at 1st-round QB. And if you're asking who projects most as a bust in this class it has to be Maye.

Hoge also said Burrow was the only first round QB in 2020. I don’t think we should put too much stock in his opinion of Maye.

Calling Merrill Hoge a "former player" is almost demeaning. For over a decade he and Jaworski were top analysts. Dude really knows his stuff.

Hodge is very often correct in his evaluations. I wouldn't just ignore him.

Merrill Loge is a legend. Look at his history with ESPN . He called both Vince Young and Leinart overrated not worthy of a first round pick. Everyone laughed and criticized him . He ultimately was 100 right

Mel is spot on with Josh Allen. Everyone hated him coming out of college and thought he was a completely raw prospect. Sometimes, guys develop.

Marvin Harrison is the best pick in this draft in my opinion. Gonna be a can't miss Hall of Famer if he stays healthy.

As a Pats fan I’m nervous. All I know is that in each draft there’s a lot of hype for a lot of QBs, but usually only 1 works out in the NFL. I don’t know who it’s going to be, but I hope we get the right guy

Its funny. Hodge is honest and unbiased. All these tv talking heads don't want to be hated so not a single one has ever said about a top prospect. Not worth a first round pick let alone top 3. According to kiper and the experts on how they talk about players there are about 300 hall of famers in every draft yet 4 years from now 200 of these guys will be on the verge of being out the league

Drake Maye was surrounded by a wretched defense, average receivers, an abysmal offensive line, and a new OC his senior year. Mack Brown ain't what he used to be, his teams fall apart at the end of the season. He still put up stellar numbers and his junior year was sensational when he had NFL quality RB's and WR's. Watch his film. That's all. Merrill is wrong on this one IMHO. Maye on a top 10 team would have been off the charts.

I think both CW and Jayden are gonna be solid NFL QBs which most teams dont have. As far as stars history tells us you really cant predict that but they both to me have very impressive personalities and sometimes that is as big of an indicator as performance. Id be happy to get either one of those guys.

The man did host a NFL film show for quite a while. Not saying he’s the gospel but his words do hold weight. Edit: Scratch that. He recently just said that Kenny Pickett was a “Super Bowl Quarterback” so his credibility has been relinquished.

Maye is being over hype just like Trubisky was being over hype it crazy to me how these NFL scout doesn't watch tape i seen a lot of things that will keep Mayes from being successful and who ever draft him want have him on their team after 3 years watch.

The Texans were pressured into picking a QB and it worked out great. Per "insiders" in Houston, the organization was hugely split on CJ. The reason they traded up for Will at 3 is bc he was a guy they most all agreed on, but were told (presumably by the owner - tho this has been denied) to draft a QB. (It is alleged that those against drafting CJ wanted to await the 2024 QB class.) So, they made a move to go all in and get both CJ and Will.

Drake Maye could suffer the same fate that Will Levis did last year in the draft

All the guys that Mel compared Maye to, they actually played the best college players in the country. With the exception of Josh Allen being in Wyoming. Maye doesn't even look as good as Allen did either. There's always these Zach Wilson, Daniel Jones, Trey Lance QB's that get this high praise when we get closer to the combine and they don't work out. Josh Allen is the exception. Maye doesn't look half as good as Allen did. I would not draft the kid. I hope they do though so JJ will go to my Broncos.

There's a reason Reddick is not in a front office anymore. If he's off on Maye, then I'm all in. He's QB1.

The best thing that New England could do is to upgrade the receiving core. The Pats have to make reciever the priority for their offense. I would go with Brissette and Zappe for the season. Get better at reciever. Next years draft class is just as good or better overall than this one.

i dont see how anyone would wanna pick Maye over McCarthy. Been confused at the ADP for McCarthy this whole time. they were saying 3rd or 4th round for him right after the CFB playoffs

A- No prospect is a finished product, thats why they are prospects. B- The number of your draft pick is not as important than where you go. Trubisky went 2nd to Chicago, Mahomes went 10th to Kansas City AND Andy Reid! David Carr went to Houston and got destroyed, Joe Flacco went to Baltimore and got carried to a Super Bowl. C- We've seen amazing prospects go to great situations and still have their careers destroyed. Andrew Luck & RG3 didnt last long. You don't just have to build around your quarterback, you have to maintain the team around your QB. The rosters Tom Brady played on were a constant carousel of linemen and receivers.

I came into this thinking that Maye was the best option for an NFL team that wanted a day 1 starter but the more I look into it the more I like JJ McCarthy. There's a lot to be said for winning intangibles and JJ certainly has the physical tools.

I think the criticisms are mostly legit. All things considered this is the most overhyped quarterback draft class in NFL history.

When he said Drake was stiff , he lost me . One thing about the commentators, especially the former QB's , they were all either average or failures at the position. Don't understand why they couldn't take the knowledge they supposedly had and apply it to make themselves better players . The main problem evaluating these QB's is , the college coaches have no interest in preparing them for the pro game . That's why it was so hard for Kurt Warner to evaluate them . It's a projection, can his issues be fixed easily? What will he be in a few years with coaching , does his college game translate to the nfl . Ibsee 2 of the top three makikg it , caleb and Drake , Jaden, not much , the way he plays with his frame won't last long in the nfl

Meh, it's all projections anyway. Will the QB CONTINUE to develop?! Do they have a skillset that can be developed, and do they have the work ethic and maturity to continue to WORK on their game?! Drake Maye is one perplexing dude. I just kept waiting for him to have the breakout performance in the big game, I personally didn't see it. I know he's got the big arm and size, but the accuracy is a concern. You take Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, even Bo Nix, and Michael Penix; all had the big moments in the big game somewhere down the line where you say okay I think he can really play. I want to see Drake Maye turn it out, but he's a question mark.Circumstances such as offensive line of course play in major role, but the player has to have those moments in spite of that. I remember when Matt Ryan was in college; Boston College had no receivers who were NFL quality but you knew could make it on his own skill set. North Carolina Tar Heels are a inconsistent team in their own right, and there's much blame to be thrown around. One of the tricks of the draft is separating the player from his college circumstances, and evaluating him on his own merits; cause he's going to a new team. Merrill Hoge also has deep knowledge of the game. I'll gave his concerns some deep consideration.

Drake Maye has had to deal with a terrible o-line, average or below average wide receivers, very much sus defense. Now my main concern with Drake is his footwork and play by play consistency.
