I have been searching for a bench for 2 years and yours is the best looking and most beautiful detail I can find. This bench is amazing even with the way you attach the accessories with wood color matching all over, you have the talent Sir, and shows in your work! Hats off to you and 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Rewatching these videos as I am hoping to kick off a winter project to build a Roubo. One additional question: Why do you inward-miter the tenons for the short and long stretchers? Is that so they can meet amicably inside the leg?

Haha I know that feeling! Thought about it enough to the point of overthinking is usually time to just get the ball rolling. I thought about making my own hardware. Acme threaded stuff is so spendy, it ended up being about the same money and there’s no way I’d personally be able to replicate the smoothness of function that BC achieves. For a daily driver in a full time shop, BC sets the bar pretty high. Might note that I’m also really pleased with my hnt Gordon tail vise in the joinery bench. Their engineering is super sleek.

Texture the holdfast with a hammer and punch and it will grip better in the dog holes. Look up the English woodworker to see how he does it.
@YouTuber-mc2el
@YouTuber-mc2el 2 года назад
Awesome job. I'm 95% complete with mine. I wanted to school myself on hand tools and I figured the Roubo would be a solid foundation. I built it exactly as Benchcrafted had it on their plans. I used Southern yellow pine I got for free. My thinking is I'm going to use the bench and find what I like and don't like and then sell it and do another one with Rock Maple. This way I can incorporate my design ideas into it and have it custom to me. My back was starting to hurt watching you tipping the bench back and forth. Again, great job. Heirloom for sure. You should chisel your name, year built and location on the long stretchers. That bench will be around for generations.

Beautiful craftsmanship! Never had a problem getting my holdfasts stick in a 4" thick top. Generally, I prefer a thicker top, but I also forge my own holdfasts. One of the key things is the diameter of the steel and the diameter of the hole they're going in. I've found that 5/8" bar works very well for a 3/4" hole because it gives the holdfast plenty of room to cant in the longer bore. The holdfasts that you're showing in the video are also very smooth and polished which tends to mean less grip in the bore due to less friction... which is problematic when you have less cant due to the longer bore on a 4" thick top. Next time I forge up a holdfast, I'll send you one for testing.
@SawyerDesign
@SawyerDesign 3 года назад
That sounds awesome! I ended up counterboring mine about half way to make them work with 1-1/4" counterbore

This is not a workbench. This is a fine piece of furniture. Its very well made, but as someone that is been woodworking for over 2 decades. I really do not understand why people put this amount of time money and energy into building a staple in any woodshop that is just going to get beat to shit. Ive been using the same workbench in my shop for about a decade now. The top was made from laminated maple and the legs were made from alder to keep the price economical. Its not the prettiest thing, but it does the job just like any other quality bench. Stout, Solid, and flat. That is all you need in a workbench. Don't know when it became trendy for people to put this level of detail and money into a workbench that's on going to be abused. I believe in simplicity in my workspace. Simplicity in the workspace allows you to lend more artistry and detail to your work piece. Its a quality build and a great set of videos, but I just don't get putting this much into something that should be purely functional. "It never made any money simply looking good, but for being good it provided for a family" quote by my grandfather.
@SawyerDesign
@SawyerDesign 3 года назад
I’ve only been woodworking for 3 years. This was a chance to practice new techniques. I appreciate your perspective, but for me, a workspace doesn’t need to be a drab cubicle; instead it should be a place that inspires. Today’s modern world where clients are sourced using social media, this also serves as a signature on my works in progress that I post. It’s also been the single best tool I’ve added to the shop. For $300 in lumber plus hardware, really not that expensive either. Something that I get to keep and appreciate every day, unlike my work that goes out the door when I’m done. Doesn’t make sense to me to make fine furniture in a place that doesn’t reflect my attention to detail that commissions receive. Just my thoughts on it. Different strokes for different folks. Appreciate it Mav!
