Loved the video. You’re correct, they look like they had so much fun up there. Wonderful commentary as always. Regarding why so many suggested Sancta Terra, that’s unfortunately how the reaction game works. For any remotely popular band you will always find most people suggesting the same first and second songs. There’s good and bad in that. Sancta Terra is a great song and the bonus of Floor on stage makes it that much better. On the flip side, that song isn’t really representative of Epica’s sound for the most part. Thank you so much for moving beyond Sancta Terra, many reactors never do and this band has much to offer.

A New Age Dawns is a smaller concept within 2 Epica albums that consists of 7 parts. The prologue is Hanad K'u. Pt 1 The Last Crusade, Pt 2 Mother of Light, Pt 3 Consign to Oblivion, Pt 4 Resign to Surrender, Pt 5 Kingdom of Heaven, and Pt 6 Design Your Universe. The main concept revolves around the collapse of the Mayan civilization as an analogy of inaction leading to demise. All good songs and they span 2 albums: Consign to Oblivion and Design Your Universe

Sancta Terra is more then often recommended because Floor is in it and not because of Epica. But the song, although a good one, is an average tune in the Epica catalog. Consign to Oblivion is one of their heaviest songs and one of the songs with most growling. They end almost every live show with this one. From soaring ballads to the heavier songs and everything in between, it is all there. If you're interested in lyrics, go to the channel of Guylain Prince, he is doing analysis of songlyrics. He has done the latest nightwish album, at the moment he is into Epica, Consign to oblivion he has done already. He does a reaction and a few days later the analysis. Great reaction to an amazing band who just finished the studio recordings for their upcoming 8th studio album.! For live video's of Epica, use those from their Retrospect show, as this was recorded for dvd and therefore has good quality.

@@BradAlenaMetalReactions I don't really know why everybody recommend this song (that doesn't really represent the overall of their music). Jaap described it pretty well, this is more growl heavy song and Sancta terra is more to the operatic end. They have different mixes, but for a song that represent better the band I would go with : Design your Universe (live at Retrospect: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hib0Gle35YE.html) Essence of silence (I prefer the official lyric than the live versions, but either is fine) Unleashed (live Retrospect) As a bonus, if you want to try more symphonic metal try one of these bands: Therion, Haggard, or some of the symphonic songs of Rhapsody/Rhapsody of fire (like: Never forgotten heroes).

The Guitar guy singing the harsh part was Mark Jansen (No relation to Floor Jansen other than he was in After Forever with Floor so he has been in bands with both amazing singers.)

"Rock Opera" is an interesting way to put it and it reminded me of another interesting song/live performance you might want to look at at some point - Avantasia's "The Scarecrow", a show and a DVD they called "The Flying Opera". They're a supergroup and their first album release in 99 was called The Metal Opera, really cool stuff overall. Anyway, bit a tangent there, keep it up!

I like how much focus has been on the keyboardist Coen Janssen (no relation to Mark or Floor). He deserves it, especially since he writes the orchestration bits, and is phenomenal at it! Epica is one of my favourite bands. But they lose a certain something in their live performances. You both mentioned the atmosphere that the band managed to create, that is significantly higher in their studio versions. The best example of this is Kingdom of Heaven. The song has so many intricate little sounds, echos and reverbs that would be impossible to replicate correctly live. Hopefully, you react to a couple of studio versions of their songs next and explore that side of their songwriting skills. For a dark atmospheric masterpiece : Kingdom of Heaven For the other end of the spectrum : Once upon a nightmare / Chasing the Dragon. Have a good one and stay safe!

I think I'm the opposite, I was always on the fence about Epica (mostly because of the growling) but I saw them live at Rock City and was absolutely blown away, so much energy and enthusiasm onstage, it was impressive given how long they have been around.
@magnusten5261
@magnusten5261 4 года назад
@@ewokkebab1300 It is a divisive opinion, and I can see both sides of the argument. There are just two bands that I prefer studio over live, Epica and Ayreon. There's no right or wrong way, of course. Hope you find just as much joy in the upcoming album's live concerts just as much when they come out! G'day and Stay safe :)

@@magnusten5261 totally agree, no right or wrong way. Everyone should enjoy bands on their own terms. If anything seeing them live made me revisit the studio works and appreciate them more. Catching them live was just the tipping point, turning a like into a love.

Loved your discussion about time/conquering/controlling/being a slave of time, these theme is ocurrent in some other Epica songs, I've heard. This song and performance definitely represent Epica more than Sancta Terra, but these are 2 sides of their art. Consign to oblivion is a concept album from 2005 (heard it in the same year, was one of my favorite albums), it's a concept album with a visuals of Mesoamerica/Maya cultures, for me it's topic is European ''discovery'' and conquest of Americas and it's impact on their cultures, it has three songs labelled ''New age dawns part 1,2,3'', maybe you should listen to 3 of them in a row to get their meaning, this one is a closing song of the album. Glad you've liked it, more Epica to see!

yes, it is their dominant style, but they have great songs which are less overwhelming such as blank infinity, last crusade, and exquisite ballads such as canvass of life, tides of time and solitary ground

This is definitely the right version of the song, this is way better than the album one. This also is how Epica really sound not Sancta Terra. Epica has always been heavier and with a lot of growls and screamings. Now you should try Kingdom of Heaven which is probably Epica best song.

Epica is amazing, but there are more great Dutch metalbands. You should definitly check out "Dear Mother" With their debut album "Bulletproof". They are a new dutch metalband formed by ex-Delain guitarist Merel Bechtold and ex-Delain drummer Joey de Boer. They teamed up with David "Pear" Hruska as their vocalist. Its realy worthwhile! I recently found them and bought the album right away, they're incredible! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gUCW2caH0nk.html

Yes, Epica and Nightwish are both amazing bands, but the real best opera metal band is THERION. They released a 3 hour metal opera, "Beloved Antichrist" with real tenors, sopranos, great choirs... Listen to "Anthem" or "The arrival of Apollonius" and you will find real opera metal and the best metal soprano (Lori Lewis)... And if you like it, react to "Land of Canaan", "Via Nocturna", "Abraxas", "Blood of Kingu", "To Megatherion", "Invocation of Namaah", "Adulruna Rediviva" (just to say some of the great amount of masterpieces this band have). Therion were the inventors of symphonic metal, without them there would be no Nightwish, no Epica, no other symphonic metal bands... Other amazing band you need to know is HAGGARD... Greetings from Spain...
