Epipremnim Pinnatum Variegata care and propagation

The variegated epipremnum pinnatum is a very underrated big-leafed variegated plant that no one talks about. The adult form of this plant will develop huge fenestrations (Split leaves) if allowed to climb up a pole or wall. Despite its beauty, I have never seen the adult form of this plant in person. Perhaps this is because they are thought to be a more “common” plant. Well I hope we can fix that because this plant is so stunning (and fast growing). In this video I cover full plant care including watering and lighting, and show you how I propagate it in various mediums (Soil, sphagnum moss, water). I even show you a 3 weeks update (get ready for some serious root porn)!

Hey Sean, I got a cutting last week with about 7 leaves on a vine and super long water roots. The leaves are still tiny, perhaps the length of my index finger. So still a very young plant with a skinny vine. I pot it in Leca and a weak nutrient solution-and the leaves started turning yellow within 3 days. I took it out of the Leca today and put it in water. I‘d really love to grow it in Leca. Think this will be possible? Maybe I pointed it too fast. Straight out of box. Right now I’m hoping that the last two green leaves will hold up, and I don’t end up with wet sticks. :(
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
When they have lives in water for that long it is difficult to move them to soil. This is why I never keep my propagation in water for more than 2 months max. I would cut them as single leaf cuttings and propagate them. Starting with new plants seem to be the only way out of this.

Have you grown it or is it too common there? I live in Canada and it isn't commonly seen in big box stores. I bought two and one had a long stem growing straight out to the side. I channeled my inner Sean and cut it back and have 7 node cuttings for water propagation. How many roots do you recommend before potting into soil? Thanks. Love the plant tour videos as well.

Hi, I recently bought this from a nursery and it already has a sprout on its node however it was accidentally removed by my dog. Does it still have a chance to survive? I'm so worried about what will happen.
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
Is there another unused node from below? If there is another branch should sprout from that lower node. If thats the only node than unfortunately you may not have a new branch 😅

With large moss poles like the one you used here, do you ever anchor them to the pot? I’m afraid that mine will fall over!

I have the same plant but with the 1st form of leaves (about 10 leaves ) should I propagate it ? Does it help the leaves to grow bigger ?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 года назад
If its not climbing up something now, its leaf will diminish in size. And its hard to train a mature plant up a pole so I would recommend cutting it and propagating. Keep in mind the top cutting is one that will produce larger leaves faster.
@jackiezbullet9306
@jackiezbullet9306 2 года назад
@@onlyplants its actually climbing on a pole (about arm-length pole) and climb longer than the pole plus creating some air roots . So , should I cut the top and let the mother plant climb the same pole ? Or just change my pole ? Thank you for your information 🙏🏼

Shawn can you give care guidance on zz zenzi? Please. I know they say its easy but its not. I paid a lot for this plant and its dropping whole stalks. I dont water it a lot but it get yellow. I have propagated my regular zz and its slow growing but the zenzi is not doing we'll. I5 did give me new stalks but more died then grew

Ooooo yellowing is sign of overwatering and possibly insufficient light. I have mine terracotta and bark/perlite/burnt rice hulls medium and water them daily. The media dries completely in hours. I find that they grow faster when placed outdoors.

@@onlyplants I live in northern NY near Canada I can't grow my house plants outside here its to cold. I dont water him much and when i do it gets just enough in the center area where the water bulbs are. I did place it in the window for about a week during summer but I have buildings across from me and a huge tree right outside my window so the light is bright but filtered. I will go and get a terracotta pot for it and repot it tmrw. I have some cactus soil perlite pumice worm castings coco peat activated charcoal and if i see some bark I will buy a small bag to make a mix.

What’s the material your moss pole made from? Do you need to keep it moist so they climb up automatically?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
Its made of coconut coir. You need to tie them to the poles with the aerial roots kissing the pole. You only need to do that for the first 2-3 nodes after that the plant will climb itself
