The EV Revolution Show - Special Episode
Thanks to Volvo Canada for inviting me to Toronto for a media event showing the all-new EX30 and EX90 BEVs!
As a small SUV that does big Volvo things, our new fully electric Volvo EX30 is designed to be as safe as you’d expect from us. It is designed to have the smallest CO2 footprint of any Volvo car to date, and to make people’s lives safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable through cutting-edge technology and Scandinavian design.
A true seven-seater, all-electric SUV that further raises our standards in safety and a more sustainable lifestyle: the new Volvo EX90 represents the start of a new era for our company in which we set a decisive course for a fully electric future.
Starting with the Volvo EX90, we’ll reveal one new fully electric car each year. By 2030, we aim to sell only fully electric cars, one of the most ambitious electrification blueprints in the automotive industry and crucial to our ambition to be a climate-neutral company by 2040.

The EX 30 looks like a great car, but the Canadian pricing, when compared to that south of the border, is astronomical! $53,700 Cdn. for the base model (51 kWh battery, 322 km. range, 150 kW DC charging, 1,000 kg towing) before any options, will not be an easy sell. By contrast, the base model in the US is the core single-motor *extended range* model (69 kWh battery, 442 km. range, 175 kW DC charging, 1,400 kg towing) and it will start at $34,900 US! Moreover, cars imported to the US from China are subject to a 27.5% import tariff, as compared to 6.1% for Canada. The Canadian pricing is truly bizarre. (Note that an overlay in the video that shows the range of the base model in Canada is 322 km./220 miles should be 322 km./200 miles if the kilometer value is correct.)

When converted that is $39,778.28 so $4878.28 US dollars more……plus we don’t have taxes included in our price so you have to add that.

Thanks for watching and yes the Chinese Tarrifs really get us Canuckle-Heads. However, for a Volvo product that pricing is good. I think the actual range of the SR will be a bit better than EPA advertised. We will see, and yes maybe I made a typo.

@kyliefan7 Thanks for watching and for running the numbers. Straight exchange is just one factor, also imports and duties. However, there is a good difference for sure between U.S. MSRP and CAD MSRP.

To be fair, the starting price 53700 is for the SMER, which is according to "Stated starting price is for the Single Motor Extended Range, RWD" for the Montreal press release. But still, it's 5000 more than the US price. Volvo Canada clearly wants to have the rebate by themselves. This is just greed.

Thanks good to hear about a few details on new EVs. Boy they really though the sustainability word around a lot. Hope it is true and they have the data to back it up.

Only about a week to go til FCL Vancouver. I want to watch and will after work just did a quick lunch look but back to the grind. Curious to find out your thoughts on both these EV's though. :) Interesting the front of the cars includes a Volvo badge unlike the Swedish/Norwegian/European versions and probably what they will bring to Australia, that badge could vanish thanks to those badge collectors with just a screwdriver I assume they use to pop it off. The EX30 is great like the eco credentials as well although it is probably about same size as Gen 1 Hyundai Kona. Very much a 2 person car or 2 adults and 2 children at most. Need smaller vehicles not giant SUV's.

I emailed Volvo Canada to ask if the EX90 and/or EX30 will be at that show. No reply as yet. Do you know the answer?

I really hope they use a 60+kwh LFP battery on the single motor US spec, even if it loses 10 miles EPA or so on paper specs, being able to use the full capacity of the battery is better, as well as its superior amount of charge cycles compared to NCM

I’m very interested into this vehicle but I thought that the base model would be way less expensive it’s $ 4,555 more expensive than a VW ID4 base model with similar range but less power and the pro version with the bigger battery pack is also a bit cheaper too I like the LFP battery for reliability and being able to charge it to 100% every day but the ID4 is way bigger too but they seem to be very hard to get here in Canada the 2023 RWD have been sold out for months now I wonder what changes the 2024 models will have if any. The positive about the Volvo is the charge port is the same side as Tesla cars meaning it will play nice with current superchargers and the adoption of Tesla NACS charge port but not for the first available cars but a adapter will still be available.

Thanks for watching and I can't comment on the pricing, only that typically, Volvo is more of a higher-end/marque brand than VW is. It's good you are doing some homework! I don't have any info on the 2024 ID.4's as I have asked, but no ETAs or anything has been released yet.

As far as the EX90, the planet simply doesn't need another large SUV, electric or otherwise but the EX30 is extremely interesting and relevant. Cost in Canada will be high $30k, low $40k??

@johnm2879 Thanks for watching and I do agree, however there are large families where I can see a 3-row large SUV being very needed. In saying that, I too think that OEMs need to build smaller vehicles. The markets are what drive OEM vehicle production and they build what people want and what they buy. And in North America, it is mainly SUVs and pickup trucks that sell the most. MSRP for the EX30 will start at $53,700 CAD Base MSRP.

One question why in US this starts at 35,000.00 in Canada it starts at 53,700.00. Hmmm pretty sure it's only 48000.00 after today's exchange rate. Why as Canadaians we pay 6,000.00 more.

Looks like they adjusted it because it’s eligible for the $5,000 incentive which brings it to $48,000

@steverichard2786 Thanks for watching and pricing versus U.S. is not just a FX rate difference into CDN. There are import duties and additional taxes imposed, even with the Trade Acts we have between our countries. Plus the EX30 will be made in China which adds more costing due to higher tariffs. At least the iZEV Incentive helps Federally as well as if you live in a Province or State where you can also use those incentives to help drive down the pricing.

Probably because it’s a pre-production model and they don’t want people getting the wrong idea.

@ksrithan No just static displays. Correct, pre-production and not safety certified yet to be driven on Canadian or U.S. roads.

I just can't get past the EX30 missing gauge cluster,nwith no head up display, and only a portrait screen to have to look over to for all info. It's gotta be so distracting. Also, removing the rear window switches is just dumb and serves no beneficial purpose for the owner. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. I was strongly considering getting one but these two things were deal breakers for me.

Thanks for watching. I understand but being a Tesla owner, the single screen is not a big deal and easy to get used to. However, I did put in a vent-sized screen infront of my steering wheel in my Model 3, that shows speed and turn signals. Just basic to increase safety (mainly for others in my family driving my car). As far as the rear window switches, I did not notice that detail so can't comment.

The Tesla model 3 and Y are two of the best selling vehicles in the world and only have a center screen. It’s honestly just fine. It’s less inconvenient than looking in the rear view mirror.

The rear window switches are in the back in the middle mini console along with with 2 more USB ports. No rear air on vents though I believe
