Fat Quarter Shop has a FABULOUS video beginner series for learning how to quilt. I cant recommend it enough!!!

Melanie Ham’s RU-vid “Learn to Sew” video playlist has amazing beginning sewing project tutorial list. She goes through placemats, napkins, potholders, zippered pouch with a ruffle, and an apron. I HIGHLY recommend any beginner to start with this video series because she goes very slow and explains the steps perfectly. Once you’re done with those six projects, she also has a super easy beginner patchwork quilt (“First Quilt” playlist) that is done from one charm pack so you can get the hang of the quilt process. I got a sewing machine for Christmas 2020 and was brand spanking new to sewing. I had never touched a sewing machine or a spool of thread prior to January 2021. I started learning from Melanie Ham’s videos and now I’ve already made a table runner, two throw size quilts and several quilted zippered pillows!

Good Morning, what an informative episode. You both answered so many lingering questions this novice quilter has. Such great questions and answers. I particularly liked the question from the new quilter and your answer. I oftentimes feel that If all my seams don’t match, my points are cut off, or the quilt is not perfectly square, I’m embarrassed to send it to a longarm quilter so it sits in a corner unfinished. I think my need for wanting to be “perfect” is holding me back. You both are helping me through this. As a mom & grammy, I always told the kiddos “practice, practice, practice”, so don’t totally understand my fear of not being perfect with quilting. All your information and your videos are helping me follow my new mantra which is “progress not perfection”. I absolutely love watching you both on RU-vid and nice seeing your handsome face, Billy 🌻

Big thumbs up for travelling to England. I did a Trafalgar 21 day tour to England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, wonderful trip totally a 5 star. And England has beautiful Liberty fabrics. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊

Billy, I was also going to share that we took a Trafalgar tour through 9 difft countries in Europe. We had an exceptional guide who took us to "less touristy" locations as well as normal tour sites. We spent an afternoon on horse drawn ride to a small village in Switzerland where they had local cheese, etc. Would go again in a heartbeat!

On one of our trips to England with my husband's college group, we entered our hotel in London to see a "murder mystery" game being put on for a Christmas party. Such fun to see the "victim" dropping "dead" in the middle of the lobby! So very British!

Thank you for not just answering my question but also making it a discussion topic, and providing great feedback! And thanks to the other listeners and viewers who added suggestions to the comments! I’m excited to work on an outlet that allows me to be productive but gives me a few minutes from Covid and the impact it’s had on homelessness. I work for a set of shelters and a soup kitchen and Covid has had us stretched beyond what we ever knew we could handle. Thank you!

Oh yes, definitely visit the uk 🇬🇧. It’s a wonderful place especially in the summer. I was born and raised in London and I’ve worked next door to some historic places, ie Tower of London, Horseguard’s Parade, Trafalgar Square and before Covid-19 I worked opposite St Paul’s Cathedral. I’ve been to the USA many times. I’ve visited Las Vegas, San Francisco, Atlanta, New York, Boston and Hawaii - beautiful country.

I usually always use an aurifil neutral to piece. I use fabric match to bind, I like to machine appliqué a lot and that color depends on my theme. Sometimes I use the thread for satin stitching to emphasize, or decorate with a decorative stitch. So many fun thread colors, but I only like solids unless I am particularly wanting to make a very specific statement piece. Good content on threads.

I was in Germany, in January. I had a grandson born there last summer, and because of the word I refuse to use, I was unable to see him until he was eight months old. That was the first time I had ever been to Europe, and of course because of the unmentionable word, I didn’t get to see much. I was able to see, that Germany is a beautiful country. I have also been to Japan! And again, it was to see a new grandchild. My daughter’s husband is in the military, so I have had some opportunity to travel to foreign lands! If you get the opportunity, do it!

Just a little note about starching and precuts... i starch mine and you will get about half an inch of shrinkage. But only in the width direction. Ive starched a square from a layer cake and after it has dried it measures 10 X 9.5 jelly roll will stay at 2.5 but you will loss a tiny bit in the width from the selvedge side.

I’ve starched all my fabric for a quilt then I washed and dried it, it still came out with the texture my non starched quilts get. Maybe it didn’t shrink as much overall but I don’t think I’d be able to tell the difference. Plus, I would think fabric shrinks if you use steam and/or Best Press.

Hello Ladies!! Love your podcast. I have a question about fabric bleeding. They say that we don’t need to worry anymore about bleeding, but I have lately had trouble with reds. I was told that you should prewash your fabric and then before you use it you should lay a wet paper towel on it for a few minutes. If the material bleeds onto that paper towel then you should throw it away and not use it. Fabric is expensive. I would have trouble throwing it away. I see that you use a lot of reds in your quilts. Do you have any suggestions for this issue?
