Hi mate enjoying your rebuild you probably already know what the smaller pipes are for just thought I would tell you the larger one is connected to filler tube and displace air when filling with fuel the smaller one is emissions which vents to charcoal canister have a look at filler neck you will have a looped tube that runs up filler neck ,also rare spares have new tanks quite expensive,I have been though the same process as I’m doing a body off resto on a hz Ute
No problem forgot to mention there is a two piece grommet where the tubes come out of the body you can not get them so don’t lose it thanks for the reply,I have a nice WB ute as well so I know a bit about them
Hey mate I recently cleaned 4 of these tanks, none had a hose in there. Those two outlets are a breather and an overflow for the filled neck. Might be an old.siphon hose that got dropped in?
Barnsey. Did one myself, I’ll share what I did. With regard the filter sock. Leave it in pot of vinegar and water 2:1 vinegar to water. Probably 24hrs then swish it and rinse, see if it needs another day. It’ll dissolve rust. Once it’s done you can neutralise the acid with baking Sosa or demineralised water. Cost $4. Alternatively now your tank is cleaned I suppose you could cut it off and put inline filter along the line. To cover small pipes you can cut the fingers from rubber gloves and cable tie them on. Your tank looks sensational.
@@BarnesysBuilds i would say so. Not sure how much drag racing you plan with the 355 but just in terms of being usable, if it worked before I'd use it again. Very simple to change later if it dies. See how it looks after that acid bath.
Looking good mate, love following your build, not everyone can afford to get a build in a few months, so I'm enjoying watching the progress. Keeps me motivated on my Statesman build. It's been a long build and I'm nowhere near as far into my build as you are.
Thanks Adrian, yeah thats true, you could get one out the door much quicker if you paid people to do the heavy lifting for you thats for sure. Good luck with finishing the build and mabe one day i could showacase the process! cheers
Thanks Barnsey for the episode, I started my HQ ute build in August thanks to you it helps heaps with my PTSD gives me something more to focus on. Cheers mate
Nice work mate! Would be really keen to showcase the progress and the story behind it as its good to hear those inspiring stories mate, well done and good luck.
Looks like a great product. My ute was a 253 on dual fuel but ran a lot better on gas than fuel, so I'm guessing its going to be similar on the inside. The builds getting finished in a couple of months either had a lot of help and working on it full time or a big budget and got a lot of it done by professionals. Unlikely they were rotisserie builds either. Great progress.
Thanks Ray, yeah i was actually surprised how filthy it really was, clearly the old fuel cap wasn't sealed for many years and dust gets in, or water got in, or the fuel was shit in the 80's. Who knows Yeah definitely big budgets and labour equals speed! Wheres the fun in that though! Would be good to showcase your progress at some stage as well. cheers
@@BarnesysBuilds yeah mate that would be sweet. Are you on my build page on Facebook? Search WB Ute Rebuild. Just pinch any pics you want or send me a message to the page.
I'm about 9 months behind here and I am about to start on my HQ resto which is a lot worse than your WB so have been interested in the rust panels etc, very helpful. I have not restored a Holden before as my restos have been European so I'm learning with/from you. As for the fuel tank repair I have done a few of these using the POR product which is the same as KBS. In the case of the Holden tank filler neck and not being able to remove all the sealer I would have used a vacuum/siphon pump to remove the excess. I have a couple of videos about the tank repair on my chanel. Keep up the great work, I'm enjoying binge watching your videos.
Thanks for watching, defitely agree with the siphon idea for the access to avoid degassing bubbles. Good luck with the HQ, i will be looking forward to seeing some vids on your channel!
Barnesy, just got through this entire build..... great work mate! Good to see. I'll be starting my 1 tonner when I get the shed organised. You're living the dream up at Castlemaine! My favourite part of VIC.
Loving the channel. I finally got my VE Valiant in shed and engine out and stripped. Im inspired by the slow bit by bit method you take. The little things matter. Cheers
Hey mate, well done on another great video. I did my tank about a month or two ago similar kind of thing. I sealed up my tank and cleaned it all up. My tank definitely didn't have a hose so I'm pretty sure you won't need it but not sure why it was in there. I've been working on my 82' WB one tonner and I'm happy to get in contact with you and send you photos and stuff of my build. Great thing your doing and I started watching your video awhile ago because I was doing my WB up as well. Been really enjoying this series mate and appreciate the quality of your content.
Great tutorial! Thanks for making this video. I got a bit worried seeing the wire wheel come out. One spark from that combined with the residual vapour in the tank... uh oh! I think you should have sealed all tank openings before doing that. But a great example of work here. Now I have the confidence to try my tank now 👍😀
We welded a 15mm barb fitting into the bottom of my utes tank as a pick up for my electronic fuel pump, running a hot 355, installed a new pickup/ sender assembly so fuel gauge works.
Barnesy's Builds I don’t have enough experience to say sorry mate, I dare say have a chat to whoever is going to build/supply your stroker kit on min fuel requirements and what carb size you will run, I do know Holley do a high flow mechanical fuel pump which could be worth looking into As well, opposed to running a noisey holly blue electric etc
For a toughie 355 you would need to increase the pick-up to a half inch line, going through modifying my HK pick-up from 5/16 standard pick-up to 1/2" pick-up using standard sender and -8 AN fittings and aluminium hardline.
Nice internal camera work Another great tip mate , I haven’t started my build but I’d like to send you some pics or vids of the beginning what I’m staring with etc , my Wb Ute is still in planning and accumulation of parts , I will be doing a statesman caprice front and have most of the parts to almost begin
Nice one Barnesy. Just got me thinking how you said not to shake the tin of KBS. I shook up mine and I did notice parts of my chassis that looked aerated. Stir and not shake. Noted.
I could've made a stirred not shaken gag there but didn't bloody think of it at the time! Yeah makes a difference with the bubbles for sure. cheers mate
If applied too thick, bubbles can form in the finish. During curing reaction, a small amount of CO2 is released. A thick coating film will have a cured 'skin' on the surface but still be curing and releasing CO2 underneath - this gas can't escape through the skin and you end up with something similar to champagne bubbles in the finish. Sand back to a fault free surface (not necessarily to bare metal) and recoat. Multiple thin coats always better than laying it on thick. 😎
@@kbscoatingsaustralia5709 Thanks for the heads up. I am happy with the coating and most it really only happened in areas that cannot be seen on the chassis anyway.
Just doing tank on my EJ build and 53 Fergie so followed your vid for advice. Have loved all your clips. I’m in Waubra not far from you. Sidetracked by Reno’s and life also but plugging along. Great stuff mate 👍
Thnak mate, I drove past that area not too long ago actually, nice country. Nice to see your doing some work on a Fergie, im also just about to fire one up since replacing the carby and broken radiator manifold. Thanks for watching!
@@BarnesysBuilds just doing carny now. Plenty of parts online which is great: I’ve had the EJ under cover at my old house in Melbourne for 30 years till I moved up here. In awesome very straight condition.
@@SpockmanPhotos it's amazing it survived from rust after 30 years under a tree! Was it covered? Live the EH EJ models, my first car was an EH sedan. I want to restore one eventually as well. Always looking for that barn find!
Hi Barnsey what you are calling the bottom or the tank is actually the Top. The two smaller pipes are 1 THE TANK BREATHER 2 THE FAST FILL VENT BACK TO THE FILLER NEK
Barnesy's Builds and your correct with the excess paint. It’s a huge pain in the arse to try and drain it. I used the entire liter through it before I realized that there was heaps to drain out and the lip being an issue. So I used a plastic syringe to get the worst. It’s now dried harder than a teenage boy with an internet connection when his mums not home after 1 day. Keep up the good work mate. We’re about even in our builds. keep up the motivation and get this chariot done
By the way I’ve chosen to upload some progress vids of my hx sedan build if you want to have a look. It’s only ever been to show a few mates and family on FB so nothing flash. Il start putting some more effort into the vids now I’m sharing it on RU-vid. More so as my own diary for the build.
Good work man! The old extra part trick huh - yeah as per previous comments man only prob actually a manual fuel gauge / dipstick as it’s a bit short and skinny for siphon hose . I’ll send ya some progress photos of my build too!
Cheers Anthony, Yeah the old siphon pipe trick apparently, yeah shoot me some details of your build and photos and happy to put it up in the showcase section if your happy. cheers
Barney where have you been hiding I have been hanging out for another episode as my build has stalled! Found a tiny pin hole in the chassis had to open it up to investigate and Crikey it's as thin as alfoil! Need to source a replacement now. Hope you had a good chrissy mate 👍
Hey Nathan, Yeah im still alive, been working on 2 episodes that i will release within the next 2 weeks. Been super bsuy but back into it and fired up to speed things up again. Sorry to hear about the chassis! Lucky they aren't that expensive to source and still plenty around. Merry christmas!
someone bet me to the punch..defiantly sumones siphon hose bro ....your going good bro keep it up ! im looking forward to your body shaping episodes have you thort bout putting a hq or hz prem front on it never was to keen on a wd front end but each to there own
Love your work Barnsey, am 4 months into my WB Ute and have loved all the videos & tips along the way, Can't wait to see it all finished... I have a Q for you, when installing fuel tank straps is there a rubber or packer on the long bolts? I have another 20 mm to tighten yet haha
Thanks mate, nice to see you have got something out if them! I'm not sure about rubber pads but from memory. I can't recall any however I wouldn't think it would hurt to pad the metal from vibration. I might look into that further myself. Cheers
You should be able to check if that fuel sender unit is working with a multi meter . Plenty of you tube vids about it . Then buy a generic filter sock .
Good work. Tricky things are fuel tanks - especially when there's no large access ports to work with. Re that tube that fell out. What was it made of? Couldn't quite tell if it was metal or old plastic.
@@TK42138 yeah, I did question it because initially I thought it was the fuel line at the bottom pipe so thought it might be an extender to reach absolute bottom. Then realized the sender is where the fuel goes out so must be siphon debris.
Hi Barnesy, My dad has taken his fuel tank out of his 1 tonne HJ Holden Ute to repair and can't remember how to put it back in! Just wondering if you have any videos or pictures that can help him with where the mounts are? Please let me know! We have been using your videos while restoring his car! Great help.
Hey Allysha, glad to hear you guys have got some info out of the videos. I haven't installed the fuel tank yet however if you watch this video at the start you can see the fuel tank. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i1nKUUfeljM.html It's held onto the chassis by 4 metal straps, one on top and bottom left and right sides. They wrap around and bolt on the brackets attached to the chassis. Simple installation. Good luck!
@@BarnesysBuilds Thanks for the reply Barnesy. For some reason the metal straps are too short and don't reach the chassis. My dad can't remember if there were other parts that came off when he took it off. Might end up having to make new metal straps that are long enough!
Thnaks Anthony, Merry christmas to you as well. It's been 3 months unfortunately, all is good, just been super busy with finishing the house. Now that it's done it back onto the ute!
Hi Barnesy. Really enjoy the videos and am in process of an 83 WB panel van rebuild, just started. I could a replacement filter sock on ebay for $19. Just search 3/8" FUEL TANK PICKUP STRAINER FILTER SOCK HOLDEN EJ EH HR HK HT HG HQ HJ HZ WB. Hope it helps.
Ha, nah ive just got it, just... Been side tracked on a house project and waiting for parts which i now have so hopefully get one out this weekend. cheers
I know you got a 308 but jump on the Facebook group : 253 “thong slapper the world “ and they should be able to help you with all your needs, a lot of blokes have done full Restos and a lot of good knowledge in there for you 👍
@@BarnesysBuilds cool mate your doing a great job, I'm restoring a WB for my wife's 30th not as easy as it seems ! Did you have trouble getting any if the body mounts off one I have come across is seezed think I'm going to have to open up the fire wall !
@@MrThorney1987 Hey mate, yeah nice, well done, mine were alright but they could sieze as they are prone to water and dirt under there, try and oxy torch or butane to heat the nut up to expand it and that might get it off.
For 600 new less the 300 you would get selling the original. I went that way, not much more in cost and saved many many hours. Well done again though. 👍🏻👍🏻
cheers, Not nsure on the hours saved though once youve listed and sold the old tank, i did the tank in a day at most and saved one along the way which is what it's all about for me.
Im Gearing up greg, ive just been side tracked building a house and boom, before i know it 2 months have past! Bloody hell. Don't worry im onto it. been buying parts.. Not far away
