Welcome! In this video my brother redoes the rear Brake Shoes, Springs and Drums for his 1993 Ford F-250 named Ty. Drums can be tricky due to the large number of springs they use and the specific order they need to go in. Make sure to watch the full video as I address specific spring locations and talk about the key differences in brake shoe and drum size between the Super Duty and non Super Duty versions of the F-250. My brother has a non Super Duty so it was harder to find the right parts. The key is that the semi-float axle (non Super Duty) uses the same brake shoes/drums as the F-150 of the time. The full-float axles (Super Duty) use bigger drums and shoes.

Good video. A photo of the assembly before any thing gets removed is also very handy! I came here because most of my springs (except the red springs) were rusted apart and had fallen off. Photos didn’t help. Thank you. I’ll watch again!

Yeah, photos are a big help. I'm having to change out the shoes on my 1997 van and I take photos and lay out the parts in the rough order they are setup as I take it apart.

Yeah. There are actually specific tools for drum brakes that make life much easier. If I wind up doing many more drum I might invest in them. I just finished drum on my '89 F-350 and I'm getting a bit tired of drums without the right tools.

As proven by the Silver Spring, showing in part of your video and the blue spring showing in the other, you edited it, but used both sides without telling the person watching the video. That made it very confusing, but I must say thank you it did help me somewhat.

I apologize for the confusion. The sides are mirrors of each other if that helps.

I noticed that too. Takedown was the driver side. Reassembly on the passenger side.

@@MazdaB3K When it matters like it does here you could mention the parts go together in the direction the truck faces. Emergency brake lever and the little cable going from the top bolt to adjuster are on the rear brake shoe. A mirror would show one on the left and other on the right. Some people (like me 🤷🏻) get easily confused with that sort of stuff. Overall, thanks for a great video! I subscribed today!

Great video, good tips, but I agree with @roberthensley8653, you need to put jack stands or blocks of something under the axle in case you jack fails. If it failed catastrophically when you're under the truck with nothing to catch it, your dead. If nothing else, put the tire under the axle. Not being your dad, just don't want you hurt.
@MazdaB3K
@MazdaB3K 9 месяцев назад
I understand. I do generally make sure I have support in place while I'm working under something. Actually had to invest in some 6 ton jackstands for an RV that I'm working on.

@@MazdaB3K know that feeling, the HD has a bunch of unique traits vs other f250 trucks making buying parts a pain till you know exactly what the thing you need is called, ended up buying a door lever at a scrap yard after 2 days of searching because it's not sold new, the easy fix would be to just swap the door with any regular f250 that had control bars instead of cables, then i have some weird cab stuff going on as well, power rear window but no switch on the dash for it, almost looks like someone wrecked it and swapped stuff around to make it work, lol

Great videos, Have you gotten back in to do the parking brake cables? I have a 94 e-250 w the same axle. I did everything you did + the parking brake cables but when reassembling, the cables putting pressure on that parking brake lever causing the brakes to drag and not sit flush on that half moon at the top of the assembly. Heavy rig so I really want to parking brake to work if possible and there’s not much info out there on this.

Glad the video helped you out. This is my brother's truck and we haven't gotten back around to it because of some paperwork issues on it. When we do and tackle the parking brake, I'll definitely make a video for it.

Many of the semi-floating (non Super-Duty) axle F250's came with 8.8" differential, which was the same one for the Mustang and some later Rangers, Explorers and Broncos.
@MazdaB3K
@MazdaB3K 10 месяцев назад
Indeed. My B3000 had an 8.8 in it. The early Explorer, Mustangs, Sport Tracs and probably a few other all got the Ford 8.8. I have one from a Sport Trac I intend to stick in a 1964 F100... someday.

Did you do anything to get the cylinder pistons to activate??
@MazdaB3K
@MazdaB3K 8 дней назад
Do you mean to get the wheel cylinder to spread the brake shoes? The wheel cylinder is hydraulically actuated, so to make it work you need to have no leaks in the brake system and to have purged all the air out of the wheel cylinder itself by bleeding it. After that, the wheel cylinder should work when the brake pedal is pushed.

great video but you guys didn’t get to show us how to replace the small cable on the parking break lever or wtv you call it
@MazdaB3K
@MazdaB3K Год назад
I don't think we showed it directly, but in general the cable that goes down and hooks on the parking brake pawl hooks onto the post located on the top center of the backing plate. If you look in the section of the video where I'm talking about making sure you get the order of the parking brake shoe and the little trapezoid shaped spacer at the center post correct, you should see the wire connected there. Normally that piece is not included in a drum hardware kit and has to be purchased separately.

If you didn't have a pair of spring pliers you should have at least filmed one side of the blue or red short springs being put on. So many videos and some small but super important detail is left out. Good video other wise.
@MazdaB3K
@MazdaB3K 7 месяцев назад
I didn't in this video, but I just did a video on drum brakes on my 1989 F350 where I do show some of the same basic technique using locking needlenose pliers to put springs on. Improvements over time I suppose.

How to force those two red little springs to be installed in those two little hooks ? Because that seems to be the most important thing.
@MazdaB3K
@MazdaB3K 8 месяцев назад
Yes. Those j-nails hold the brake shoes in place, so they do have to be done first. My F-350 has the same setup and I just did them so this is what I did. I took some needle-nose locking pliers and locked them TIGHT toward the ends of the hook in the spring. I then pushed from the end of the pliers just about as hard as I could in order to push the spring in just far enough to wiggle the spring under the j-nail so I could hook it. Clamps really are you friend here. You can take some locking pliers style square clamps and hold the brake shoes in place so you can focus all your energies on getting the spring onto the j-nail. Hope that helps.

Could be possible to install rotors break systems to replace the rear break drums systems in the 96 e-250 ?
@MazdaB3K
@MazdaB3K 8 месяцев назад
You mean a conversion to disc brakes? This is the same rear end they put in F-150 trucks of the same year so if you can find a conversion kit for a '97 F-150, it should work here. Something else you can do is swap in an entire new axle that is already setup for disc brakes. You'd have to find a compatible donor for that, but again, you might find a F-150 or non super duty F250 that had disc in the back. I've not researched this but yes, I think a kit is out there that you could utilize.

@MazdaB3K

If I remember correctly that is supposed to be in held in place on a pin that sticks out of the brake shoe. The bracket has to be inserted in the correct order so it doesn't hit a spreader bar that goes between the two brakes shoes. There's also supposed to be a flat washer on top of the bracket at the pin, then a horseshoe shaped clip that holds it all in place. My suggestion is check the order in which all the parts have been put in and see if something is out of sequence. You may also want to inspect the bracket it self and make sure it isn't bent.

There is a specific tool you can use to push the springs down enough to get them in position and then rotate them so they are locked in. I don't have that tool. Instead what I did was take needlenose locking pliers and grabbed the sides of the spring locking plate (spring hat) so I could shove the spring down into position and still be able to rotate the spring hat to the locked position. Here's a link to the correct tool: www.amazon.com/GEARWRENCH-Universal-Brake-Retaining-Spring/dp/B0002SQU7W/ref=sr_1_24?crid=3EIKOLPOAXAP1&keywords=drum+brake+brake+nail+tool&qid=1697215406&sprefix=drum+brake+brake+nail+tool%2Caps%2C157&sr=8-24
