In this First Episode of our new series Hitler’s Invasion of the West, ‘The Fallen Fort’ sees the team journeying from the UK and heading deep into Belgium to Fort Eben Emael. We start our day by taking a look at the Victoria Cross Action of 2nd Lt. Richard 'Dick' Annand of the Durham Light Infantry, before heading to our day’s main location towards Maastricht and Liege. Visiting the Fortress of Eben Emael, we discover all about the audacious German glider-borne assault which kick-started Hitler's assault into Western Europe on Friday 10th May 1940.
Teaming up with the various Tourism Boards and the EuroTunnel, the WW2 Nation Team hit the road again last October as we set out to explore some of the historical sites connected with Hitler’s Blitzkrieg campaign in the West during the Summer of 1940. In line with the anniversary of the offensive we will be releasing new episodes fortnightly over the course of this summer.
Special thanks to Infinite Pixel, The Map Archive, After The Battle, Pen & Sword, Fort Eben-Emael, the Tourism Boards, the EuroTunnel and many others for their kind help with this Series.
----IMPORTANT----
We all have a great passion for WW2 history and are determined to learn as much as we can about this time in history and share our experiences with you, the WW2 Community. We are on a journey of discovery and exploring this period of history from all sides. Those with sympathetic views towards the Nazi regime or hold any type of extreme views are not welcome here on WW2 Nation.

Dick Annand, now that's a real hero. He has the same smile at 90 as he did at 20. Glad I found your channel boys. Greetings from Oxford, Connecticut U.S.A.!!!!!

"CHISELED OUT OF LIMESTONE", easiest stuff on earth to cut, but...they had used Gelignite for 50 years by then, limestone can be sawn with a steel blade, by hand or wire cable, then shifted by blast fracture, then removed, in slabs, BIG slabs, go west to the Rhine, it's all toughest grindstone...try hitting THAT with a chisel.

The attackers used hollow charges that were new at the time, and Belgium was neutral when the fort was attacked. All this would have made no difference if the Ministry of War had followed the concept of the forts. They relearned in WWI you needed interval troops equipped with artillery to bombard a fort when people are on the roof. Unfortunately, Belgium didn’t fund the interval troops and the rest is history.

This story should be a movie. There are lots of stories on the German WW1 and WW2 I believe. Why don't they make movies out of it?

Rather naive of the Belgians to be expecting a declaration of war after Poland and Norway.
