‘The Wolf’s Gorge’ is the third episode of our new series - Hitler’s Invasion of the West. Travelling further south into the Belgian Ardennes close to the border with France, Alex and Lawrence visited the village of Bruly-de-Pesche to discover more about Hitler’s Headquarters here in the summer of 1940.
Twenty-eight local villages including Bruly were evacuated when the Germans occupied the area and the Wolfsschlucht - Wolf’s Gorge - as it was christened - was hastily constructed here in May 1940 by the Todt Organisation. This forward HQ was built to allow Hitler to be close enough to the front-line to safely conduct the second half of campaign in the West. In this episode we discover all about this time of occupation as well as the local resistance groups that sprung up here during the war.
Teaming up with the various Tourism Boards and the EuroTunnel, the WW2 Nation Team hit the road again last October as we set out to explore some of the historical sites connected with Hitler’s Blitzkrieg campaign in the West during the Summer of 1940.
Special thanks to Infinite Pixel, The Map Archive, After The Battle, Pen & Sword, the Bruly-de-Pesche 1940 Museum Team, the Tourism Boards, the EuroTunnel and many others for their kind help with this Series.
----IMPORTANT----
We all have a great passion for WW2 history and are determined to learn as much as we can about this time in history and share our experiences with you, the WW2 Community. We are on a journey of discovery and exploring this period of history from all sides. Those with sympathetic views towards the Nazi regime or hold any type of extreme views are not welcome here on WW2 Nation.

Super episode guys, would love to have had more content on this fascinating bit of history. I have only recently stumbled on your site, so thank you to Ben Mayne for tweeting about it. Great you are covering France and Belgium in the early war years, as no one else seems to be paying any attention to this vital period, which is a shame. Interesting point you made about the clearance by the Germans of all the locals within the vicinity of the site. Funny thing is, they did the exact same thing in Berchtesgaden, when the turfed off all the local farmers and their families off the mountain and its surrounding meadows and pastures in the mid 1930's, when they were building the Berghof and other monstrosities for the Nazi ruling elite. Keep up the great work !
