‘The Wolf’s Gorge’ is the third episode of our new series - Hitler’s Invasion of the West. Travelling further south into the Belgian Ardennes close to the border with France, Alex and Lawrence visited the village of Bruly-de-Pesche to discover more about Hitler’s Headquarters here in the summer of 1940.
Twenty-eight local villages including Bruly were evacuated when the Germans occupied the area and the Wolfsschlucht - Wolf’s Gorge - as it was christened - was hastily constructed here in May 1940 by the Todt Organisation. This forward HQ was built to allow Hitler to be close enough to the front-line to safely conduct the second half of campaign in the West. In this episode we discover all about this time of occupation as well as the local resistance groups that sprung up here during the war.
Teaming up with the various Tourism Boards and the EuroTunnel, the WW2 Nation Team hit the road again last October as we set out to explore some of the historical sites connected with Hitler’s Blitzkrieg campaign in the West during the Summer of 1940.
Special thanks to Infinite Pixel, The Map Archive, After The Battle, Pen & Sword, the Bruly-de-Pesche 1940 Museum Team, the Tourism Boards, the EuroTunnel and many others for their kind help with this Series.
