It's been a hectic yet memorable months for us; planning the wedding, getting married, and finally rewarding ourselves with a trip to New Zealand. We went down from Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, then to Queenstown. Here are some of our memories.
Shot with BMPCC mark I, Canon TV 13mm, Canon 17-105mm, Noritar TV 6mm.
PS. See it in HD and headphone ;)
Cheers,
Vedro El Citra

What a hidden gem I found searching for random BMPCC footage, you definitely have an eye for cinematography. Beautiful work! Do you mind sharing the border overlay and was this all handheld with stabilizing in post? I would like to use the Pocket for its IQ and colors but never found a good setup while on the go. What was your setup for this besides lenses, e.g. cage, battery solution, screen?

Thank you for your kind words. I got the overlays from this link bit.ly/2IBF4tG and stretch it out a bit. BMPCC is an old camera (I even got it secondhand) but the color science is even better than nowadays cameras IMO. I was on my honeymoon so I didn't do much setup, really. Basically 90% shots are with cheap tripod, shot on prores HQ and 422. No cage, no external screen, just the body itself. I got myself 9 batteries, though, this is still the drawback of BMPCC. They drain so fast. You can get something like this bhpho.to/2MrfiKS But this limitation simulates the way if you shoot on film roll (which is why most people use bmpcc for its 16mm look). You need to think carefully before you shoot and I believe it triggers more of your creativity. I think if you nail the exposure, you'll get the best out of this camera. Try to use your zebra at 100% and expose up until before the zebra appears. Some people call this "expose to the right" method. Hope this helps you.

Thank you! It definitely has its quirks. I one laying around so I might as well get a pistol grip and an external battery for documenting this summer. I couldn't agree more about the quality of the image, very filmic and detailed without looking artificially sharpened. I'm so excited for the updated 4K version to be released in September! Do you mind sharing your way of color grading this footage?

Yes, if the new camera lives up to all the specs, it will be a perfect camera for small to medium productions! I did the final cut in premiere, then brought the xml file to davinci resolve. I used the built in BMCC LUT from resolve and tweak things a little bit. The key is to preserve the skin tone, so however you grade the footage the skin tone is still on point. Here is one helpful tutorial ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HcFPJOLTFP0.html

I see. I'll definitely check out the tutorial, thanks! I apologize for asking so many questions, I just like the look of it so I'd like to know every detail. The soft highlight rollout, is that just from using vintage lenses or did you use some sort of diffusion filter? Is the grain from the camera or added in post, any particular grain you're using? From my experience, RU-vid's compression is quite problematic when using certain kind of grain because it makes everything soft/pixelated.

The soft highlight comes from the old lenses. I tried to use modern lenses and they all are "too sharp" for the look. I used additional grain from filmconvert and exported it in prores so it retains the detail as much as possible. RU-vid's compression is annoying and I haven't got the answer yet. But some people say you can upscale your video to 4k and upload it to youtube. That way, you'll get more details, but I haven't tried it yet.

Those shots are amazing. With the new 4k pocket coming I think this camera still has a place especially for that vintage look. Did you use raw or prores?

I agree with that. In my deeper heart, I prefer this old bmpcc cause of the super 16 sensor. I used both raw and prores just to experiment. And hey I can't even see the difference ;)
