Epson XP Waste Ink Pad Fix : XP600 to XP860

This video guide uses the XP-645 as a demonstration model to show how you can remove, empty and replace the waste ink pads in any of the Epson Expression XP printer series from the XP-600 to the XP-860 model. We chose the 645 as it's a white plastic which makes it a lot easier to see what's happening but the process is exactly the same for the black coloured versions too.
The video shows our XP2 Printer Pad set which you can purchase as a bundle (with a reset key) here:
www.octoink.co.uk/pid/797
... or just as a pad set (if you're already got the waste counter reset sorted) here:
www.octoink.co.uk/pid/799

A fuller list of printer models covered by this guide are:
XP500
XP600, XP605
XP610, XP615
XP620, XP625
XP630, XP635
XP640, XP645
XP700, XP701, XP710
XP7100
XP720, XP750, XP760
XP800, XP801, XP802
XP810
XP820, XP821
XP830
XP850
XP860
The above list is unlikely to be comprehensive as variations of the same design are being released globally, with different model numbers despite the printer being the same unit. We'll try to update as/when we can.
---
Also wanted to add a vote of thanks to ‪@tristramo3760‬ who created a much earlier DIY version of these instructions using his XP-800 as the model. We didn't even know the video existed until orders went through the roof but his style helped inform our own efforts when creating this and similar "How to" videos and just wanted to repeat that his efforts were very much appreciated. We don't doubt it helped save a considerable number of printers going to landfill which is great! Thanks again.

NOTE: The video shows spare pads as always being part #3. This is no longer true and the spare(s) can be any of the different pad shapes. To use these you simply place the spare(s) in next to the part of the same shape (as required). Apologies that we didn't make this clearer but an updated version of the video will be provided in the future to make this and a couple of other small tips, a bit easier to understand.

The step-by-step instructions in this video were indispensable in guiding me through the changing of the waste ink pads. At one point I was considering buying a new printer, except for the fact that I had many ink cartridges that would probably become useless. I especially appreciated the details of the instruction such as the tools required, waste container, the different colored screws, magnetic screwdriver, positioning of parts to be reassembled, etc. It has been a pleasure doing business with OctoInkjet/Printer Potty!

Great tutorial...Nicely done. Epson really dosn't want you to get this maintenance box. OMG soo many screws to to get to this tank. On my Epson WorkForce 630 I had 1 screw and what I did was rinsed them out with water for about 15 min. Let them dry over night and then put everything back the next day. My maintenance tank does not have a chip just like this one so I was able to clean the pads and reuse. But for those with a tank with a chip you will need to order a new tank and with the pads.

Super helpful video. It guided me through the removal perfectly (Epson XP-7100). I am not sure where to reorder new pads, so I will try to rinse thoroughly and dry the pads and replace the old ones. I will use the epson manual to find out how to reset the wasting counter. Prior to the video, I was 99% sure I would need to replace the printer (Epson support is lacking in either doing the work or identifying guidance. The tech at the store of purchase said they had a "new one" I could buy!).Your video provided excellent direction. Thanks, Tony
@octoinkjet
@octoinkjet Год назад
Hi Tony. Glad it helped. Couple of things to note. 1. If you wash the pads don’t squeeze them at all as this just compresses the pads so they felt up more and reduces capacity. 2. Resetting the waste counter isn’t in the manual or supported by Epson (outside of an official service centre). Best option we can recommend is a WICReset key with the app. There’s other videos on this channel that cover that process too.

Is there a difference between the ink pad and the waste ink pad? Also, where can I buy a replacement pad?
@octoinkjet
@octoinkjet Год назад
Not sure exactly what you mean but almost all "ink pads" are there to absorb waste ink in some form or other. In the XP series covered by this video there's the main waste pad (which is what we change here) and the platen pad. The latter is the thin pad that runs the width of the printer and catches any overspray from borderless printing. Does that help? As to where to buy, we have these replacement waste pads on our store here: www.octoink.co.uk/pid/797

my XP-600 started showing this message after I cleaned the printer heads, as I was getting a lot of gaps. "A printers ink pad is at the end of its service life", Epson said that model is dicontinued and no parts are available. Does this video cover this and do you have parts?
@octoinkjet
@octoinkjet 3 месяца назад
First off, yes the XP-600 is definitely covered by this video, our XP2 pad+key bundle and the reset process covered in other videos (keyword: WICReset) on the channel. Secondly I'm horrified that the support rep' you spoke to lied so blatantly about the availability of parts and/or support for the waste pad error you received. @octoinkjet
@octoinkjet 3 месяца назад
This can happen when air gets into the cartridges and causes an air lock. The simplest solution is to remove the cartridges in the printer and replace them with a fresh set. Cap the carts you remove and leave in storage right way up and they should settle out over time as the foam/air-bubbles dissipate. You’ll likely need at least one head clean to get the ink running but don’t do multiples in quick succession as that just wastes ink and makes more foam.
@jimmydandy9364
@jimmydandy9364 Год назад
I know 3 people with XP620 and XP645 respectively, who tried to change the main waste pad and box, it's not that complicated, the problem is you have to turn printer upsidedown or sideways, which causes a misalignment and residue ink from the nozzles to pool up - even if removing the cartridges, eventually air introduces itself in the lines, they had to waste 4 complete refilled ink cartridges to get the nozzles fully working again, from what I heard, when you have the replacement done directly at an EPSON service center, they allegedly use shipping fluid and completely flush the nozzles, replace the pad, then recommend you buy a new set for the initial ink charge mode (same mode when you initially turn on the printer). Not ONE person who replaced pads themselves that I know of were able to get the printer in working order (full nozzles), only 1 person managed after multiple clean cycles span across 1 day and 4 complete ink cartridges. The fact that EPSON made it such a difficult process in not allowing you to repair and change components without flipping printer and skewing it out of alignment and damaging heads is questionable, and in my opinion there should be a class action lawsuit against them. In previous EPSON models (older ones) you could easily change pads without flipping printer, or divert the tube that goes from the pump directly into an external bottle through a single door held by 1 screw. I noticed you did this with your ink carts installed, when turning the printer on its side didn't you get ink spill from the bottom, not necessarily from carts, but from the residue in the parking pad and pump beneath it ? Also heard reports of people's CC get stolen when buying the keys from that provider, they are in Russia, in my opinion it is a rip-off to have to pay so much money for a reset key, there is an adjustment program available, unfortunately I have not seen one available for North American versions of the printer. With the initial ink charge and ink clean cycles you will need after the new pads, you will likely use up at least 15-20% of your pad already. Great video one of the best I have seen about how to replace them, unfortunately I have not known anybody who was able to get their printer working the same way it was before the replacement.
@octoinkjet
@octoinkjet Год назад
Obviously we've been working with a much larger pool of customers and tend to hear of problems rather than successes so we're aware that there are situations when the pads can leak excess ink which is why there are other instruction sets (SX535WD for example) where we've leaned heavily on removing the pad holder without tipping the printer. You've provided a lot of information in your comment so I'll need to break things down a little but here's what we know about waste pads and their potential for leakage/soiling. 1. The waste ink pads in the printers are actually overspec'd to allow for excess capacity, so in theory they shouldn't leak if the waste ink pad warning is heeded. 2. However some end-users will reset their waste ink counters without actually dealing with the physical waste pads and that's a near guarantee of excess ink or even a leak sitting in the pads as a ticking time bomb for later. 3. There's also end-users who are using CIS systems or refillable cartridges who have suffered from an uncontrolled spill or slow leak into the waste ink system that then gets dumped into the pads but isn't accounted for by the waste counter itself. While the latter scenario is possible we'd lay betting odds on the bulk of instances of ink spills or soiling have occurred due to users resetting and forgetting. As for the WICReset app, their home is actually Ukraine and definitely not Russia. We've spent a considerable amount of time checking the apps functionality with each release and eventually developed a strong relationship with the developers, so we no longer have any qualms about their reliability or motives. That said, we certainly understand the reluctance of end-users without that relationship or history, to trust third party apps. In terms of payment security, we can't speak to other retailers but our system for payment of keys (and all other products) are secured by Stripe & Paypal and work incredibly well. Ultimately we're glad the video is useful and will look at how to highlight some of the potential problems properly so that end users, such as your contacts, know how to use the information we've provided but in a way that limits the likelihood of ink spilling out or leaking internally.
@jimmydandy9364
@jimmydandy9364 Год назад
@@octoinkjet Cheers for that great video, again, it is one of the BEST one I have seen online, and you took the time to explain how to put things BACK. As to point #1, yes the pads are overspec'd, but there is even more to that, the % value of the waste pad is variable can can go back down over time, they've also accounted for evaporation of ink on these pads. You misunderstood me about my comment, I was not talking about the waste PADS leaking ink, it would be extremely unlikely for it to happen, unless you reset counter and kept using printer enough so that the pads become overwhelmed - When counter reaches 100%, you can even reset counter back to 90% for FREE, and safely continue using your printer until you change the pads, and with evaporation, you can probably get even more use. What I was referring to is NOT the pads, I was referring to the ink CARTRIDGES, I believe I was specific about that, in your video I noticed you had all the INK cartridges installed, under the cartridges there are the meshes that site above the nozzle (heads), when tipping over the printer, ink from the cartridge outlet could leak. This is especially true if you are using 3rd party (non EPSON) cartridges, which have VENT holes, it's likely people who have this happen did not plug or tape those vents, and that ink came out through the holes, for EPSON original carts, that might not be an issue, but ink leaking beneath the carts, maybe, and causing an imbalance or air in the nozzles is a possibility - So this is what I meant - I do not know anybody who had leaks from the waste pads. As far as the platten pads, those rarely need to be changed unless you do lots of borderless photos printing, otherwise ink evaporates rather fast in that area, I've had my printer since more than 4 years and my platten pads are at 2% :D As far as paying to getting a key to reset printer, I was under the impression you could manually reset waste ink pads on the XP600 series, I remember it being possible on R series printers through a holding a combination of keys whilst printer is unplugged, and at the same plugging power, don't know if this applies to the XP600. For people who are comfortable modding, you could avoid using pads altogether by installing a tube that goes from the pump's output and diverting a tube outside to a container. So a tip, with the WICReset, if your pads reach full and you get the error, use the FREE, one time, reset key, I've done this myself, and been using my printer since, that 90% became 70% over time due to evaporation, I plan on changing mine soon and hope I don't run into issues like other people I know have, especially from air clogging nozzles or ink from CARTRIDGES leaking sideways into printer.

Ah... Okay... thank-you so much for putting me right about what you'd said. I see where you've coming from now and I take your point about cartridges. FWIW I've not seen this happening for too many customers but it might explain one or two instances that we never got to the bottom of. I'll look at creating some content and maybe editing in an advisory on that point (and CIS installations now that I think about it) when I switch things across to the Printer Potty specific channel that's in the works. As for resetting the days of the R300 where a few key presses worked were almost immediately gone once the process was published all those years ago. Epson locked and bolted the door pretty darned quick after that. Oh and just to note we started off with external waste ink kits back in 2008 or so but offering pads has shown itself to be more popular for many reasons. I didn't understand that preference until my second child learned to walk and, well... it's a lot clearer now! Either way, we're trying to provide videos for both the pad replacement and external waste kit installation so both are covered. You'll probably see that if you look a little closer at the channel now. Thanks again for clarifying the point about the leakage from cartridges rather than the pads, it has been taken on board and will be addressed shortly.

@@octoinkjet Great - BTW, I will change mine soon and will let you know how it went, I already made some plans to avoid the issues, one of them being tilting the printer 45 degrees instead of flipping a full 90 degrees, this will require me using one hand and switching as required, the FASTER I can remove and place the new pad box, the better, in m case I already have a spare box with pads already installed. As far as EPSON locking with bolts, yeah after the XP-620 series, they pretty much rendered chip resetters and auto chip resets useless, now all EPSON printers have a one use chip. I wouldn't be surprised if eventually they add one use chips to waste ink, also another fun fact, original EPSON ink cartridges are not sponged based, a lot of people use non EPSON refillable cartridges that are sponge based, so more prone to air and clogs during repetitive clean cycles. Anyhow once I replace mine I will post my experience. I've heard of instances where people where flipping the printers upside down, there is potential leak risks, not only from the cartridges, but residue ink on the parking pad and conduits leading to the pump.

The changes Epson made to their cartridges and ink receivers are destined for another video but there's already chipped maintenance boxes instead of what we have in the generation of printers covered in this video.

-- translated from -- The Stylus Color 915 is a very old printer that we have no direct experience of ourselves so we have no video for it. However you should be able to find the service manual which shows you how to disassemble the printer to gain access to the waste ink tube(s). Once you have access to those you can redirect them out to an external waste ink tank like our Printer Potty kits. With regards to the printhead, if you have replaced the head it may simply not be primed properly or be faulty. Impossible to suggest what to there but again the service manual and access to the appropriate adjprog service utility/app may help work out that problem. Sorry we can't be of more help.
