This week's video takes us to Ireland. Aoife is a talented J15 sculler. Her coach, Ashling, has sent me this footage and asked for feedback. Aoife's main problem is that she is using linear drive erg technique in the boat.

Really appreciate all the feedback Aram. Not just for the athlete but for coaches too.

I have watched only first 6.5 min. What is interesting to observe is that every stroke is almost identical, due to body/shoulder stiffness. This is typical of the erg rowing. In a boat every stroke is a tiny bit different, due to: adjustment to water conditions, balancing the boat, and trying to get in a better position for a catch or finish. Also, let's not forget turning a head to check for traffic, when on an open water... I hope this makes sense and thank you for the video and the analysis.

Excellent deconstruction Aram ! So clear how the quick pívot is slowing down the catch ! Also the lack of time to execute a proper catch ! Brilliant ! Thanks ! I’m learning so much with you ❤

Thanks to coach and rower for sending this for analysis. That could be me in the boat. I row at stroke in a double and my partner commented on the shoulder upper arm tension at the catch. I will be using the erg power profile you drew as a guide to try and get my erg and boat power aligned. My coach talks about opening the double window as I get to the catch and pushing out with the thumbs, this analysis has helped me understand that more. Thank you

As a freshman varsity rower I have learnt a tremendous amount about rowing from your videos and would like to thank you for helping me become a better athlete. With that being said I would like to ask you about your opinion on the importance of backswing in the rowing stroke, as a high school rower my school placed a priority on an emphasized backswing whereas in my varsity system a smooth transition was prioritized with more of a focus on large leg + arm drive and a minimal backswing. Many thanks in advance.

Really great technique analysis. I learned lots! Best go out to the young rower.

Morning Aram, Any other analysis videos just say what’s wrong but you explain why, how to correct and the benefits of correction with body position and boat setup. A great bonus to us out here trying to improve without coaching 😎

A very insightful video as always, Aram. I am a big believer in feel. Every good athlete needs proprioception. What you say is correct, but Aoife might also like to feel for more weight on her feet in the power phase. Because she pivots the hip so

As always great analysis. I might try doing the push pull drill to get the feel of locking the blade at the catch. Backing the boat from the finish up to catch and then smoothly and solidly transition to the drive, Most people would likely disagree with me but I would also try rowing the inverse ratio drill, accelerating the recovery and decelerating the drive, shooting for a 36 - 38 rating at quarter pressure. it loosens the shins, hips and shoulders all at once and helps the athlete develop a quicker catch. I hope she sticks with rowing. When she learns to harness the bodies elasticity she will go fast.

It seems that she is not suspending her weight well enough. That in it self adds to the "linearity" of her drive, in that it lacks the non-linearity of the acceleretion one gets just by suspending properly.

What about ratio, as in slide/ drive?

a question about force curves: is there a difference between concept2 and crokers oars? because i feel like the concept2 ones bend at the catch a lot more. on the linear erg my force curve is like rising for the first 2/3 (or the first 3/4) and then falling afterwards (there is no spike, just a gentle rounding). should i go harder with the legs? but that doesn't feel very good. is there another way to achieve a plateau?

the difference between the oars bending could be that the c2 is older than the crocker maybe
@nootnoot548
@nootnoot548 4 года назад
@@akkornemtudom9571 no, the c2s are about 6 months old (not skinny) and the croker about 3 years but only with like 500km on them

Aoife here stays more upright than I do on the erg. I can almost do a full situp on each stroke on the erg. Is this another way that the erg differs from actual boats - that going all the way back is highly discouraged on boats?

You shouldn't be leaning all the way back on the erg, chief

Hands too high at release and through recovery requiring them to drop as blades are squared (to avoid blades hitting water in the roll up)
@henryhamilton1051

Dropping the hands just before the catch results in bouncing the hull down.

Too early to pivot the upper body and bend the arms. Doesn't get the acceleration from the trunk. My 50 cents.

On the recovery stroke, What is the benefit of keeping legs straight until after one's hands are forward of the knees? or what are the demerits of bending the knees before one's hands are forward of the knees? I noted similar comments here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y62fto4kHrI.html&lc=Ugyr4Ucd0i_6b0r_8YR4AaABAg
