Watching this concert changed my life in 1985. It was on MTV on a Saturday night. I had begun getting into EC but his music became an obsession after this.. Tim Renwick, of course, plays brilliantly here as well. Great stuff all around.
This is perhaps my favourite Eric Clapton concert song version, Tim Renwick and Eric are just stunning on this song, lifting it to a higher level than ever before. Totally awesome. Thanks for running this I never tire of this masterpiece. Rock On.
Yes, I got into Al Stewart because of the great Electric guitar sound he had. I thought it was Albert Lee when he played with Clapton, He is my 3rd favourite guitarist behind Gilmour and Latimer.
I was also at this amazing concert - some of the best versions of his songs I've ever heard were played that night. Remember it like it was yesterday...
This is true. EC is a very generous man when it comes to sharing the stage. Still, EC has upped his game in the past few years and is a more exciting performer as a result.
TOTALLY agree, John. I was at this Hartford show in '85 and loved every minute. When we got in and saw all the boom cameras, we knew we were in for one awesome night!
By far, my favorite version of this song. Clapton's back-up guitarists are always brilliant: mark knopfler, phil palmer and tim renwick are great examples of them. Thanks for uploading.
Toby, I was there in the audience that night in Hartford, and your great uncle WAS great playing along with Eric. The live version of this song especially is the very best I have ever heard!
I like this period of Eric Clapton's work. Check out his Mean Woman Blues with Carl Perkins & friends. He's on fire playing Rock n Roll riffs on "Blackie"
I was at this show!! I still have the ticket in my collection. We did not know it was going to be filmed until we saw a sign on the door walking in that said "You are being filmed for MTV" I have the vhs and just recently converted it to DVD. The show was long. He did at least 2 extended encores. The video edited out a few of the tunes but most of the standards are there.
I saw the live 85 concert on tv soon after the video release and bought the video, I've watched it scores of times and claptons solos still blow me away every time, seen him play live twice, back in 89 and again just last year, but I would have loved to have been at the Hartford Connecticut concert cause the atmosphere and his playing looks out of this world !
I cannot imagine what it would feel like to be ripping a solo on badge and look over to see Clapton smiling at you as he plays the rhythm part. Judging from the way Tim was jumping around afterwards it feels really good.
I agree that Tim definitely had the hot hand that night - you could see EC was loving it! - IMHO it shows that EC isn't concerned about others grabbing the light, if the music is great - notice in Layla, Tim had the Lead line. i think EC noticed TIM was HOT and gave him more front time.
Tim Renwick's solo here is better than Clapton (as was George Terry's on OGWT in '77 also on utube periodically). I heard or read somewhere that Hartford '85 was the last time Blackie was used. Cheers.
Yes there is and I have it. I bought it from somewhere on t'internet but it's almost certainly a bootleg. The title is 'Eric Clapton Live Hartford Civic Center CT. 1985. Good luck!
It used to be called The Behind the Sun concert like the album from that year. I used to rent this VHS from the locale video store. My buddy made me a copy when it aired on Showtime back in '86 for the first time. Great show
Tim Renwick is good, but is no match for the master, as far as him having a better lead than Clapton on this track is excuse the expression, absolute bollocks !!!
