Wonderful tribute to his recently departed friend, Richard Manuel. If you don’t know Richard Manuel, look him up. He was known as the Canadian Ray Charles. Brilliant singer. And a member of a truly great band…The Band.
@@fgsp8909 There’s a theory, introduced in former Band Manager Joe Forno’s book (he was their Manager at the time of Richard’s suicide, as well as a friend) that Richard’s suicide may have had less to do with his drinking, and the crappy venues they were touring, than his marital problems. Levon Helm’s hotel room was right next to the Manuel’s, and he claimed that he didn’t hear a second person in that room (he heard Richard in there, but apparently not Arlie). He had allegedly told Forno to contact an attorney when Forno went back to Woodstock during that final tour. His book is an excellent read, by the way, with an entire chapter devoted to his suicide. It’s a good book that provides a lot of info about the time between their reforming and the release of Jericho, including the aborted Sony Sessions of 1991, where they collaborated with Jules Shear, who wrote All Through The Night for Cyndy Lauper. There wasn’t much on Billy Preston’s brief membership in The Band in 1990, but it’s a very good read.
