Eric takes on canned chili in his Canned Chili Challenge. He judges 6 commercially available cans of chili: 4 supermarket and 2 dollar store. The challenge is blind judging of the appearance, smell, and taste. The contenders are Hormel Chili with Beans, Campbell's Chili Been & Bean Roadhouse, Wolf Brand Chili Homestyle, Amy's Organic Chili Medium, Dollar Store Southgate Chili with Beans, and Dollar Tree Hartford House Chili with Beans. Enjoy! Please share!

AmyLearnsToCook . Amy's Organic Chili Medium contains tofu, and is vegan. It has been a little difficult for me to get used to the flavor of the tofu. Amy's organic chili with vegetables does not contain tofu I think it's vegan, but I know it's vegetarian. You may already know these facts...

mike hubbard I haven't had Stag chili in a long time. We pretty much got one of every brand at our local store. I was disappointed because I haven't seen Nally chili out here on the east coast. I am used to it out west but I don't think they carry it out here.

Chili is a pepper based beef dish. Historically, without beans. According to the International Chili Society...."Cut up as much meat as you think you will need (any kind will do, but beef is probably best) in pieces about the size of a pecan. Put it in a pot, along with some suet (enough so as the meat won't stick to the sides of the pot), and cook it with about the same amount of wild onions, garlic, oregano, and chiles as you have got meat. Put in some salt. Stir it from time to time and cook it until the meat is as tender as you think it's going to get." Up here in Michigan, some of us actually add sweet corn. I know...sounds strange but it's delicious. I appreciate your review and the work you put in. Thanks for a very good post.

+HomeWorldSecuritySgt Thanks for watching and your comments. After some thoughts and much delays, I decided to not use any of these for my 'chili dog' episode. I made my own "eat'n" chili, which is much different than my competition chili. No beans in it. Has tomato in it, thus technically not a 'Texas Red' as defined by the hard liners, but close enough. I may do one of those later. I'm not a fan of putting any veggies, other than onions, in my chili. Tomatoes and chili peppers are fruit, thus don't count. One ICS comp judge noted "nice vegetables" when I had too much tomato sauce in one submission, but then they'll criticize you if your chunks of meat aren't perfect cubes, calling them 'squares'. So, I find them a little too nitpicky for my time. CASI is a little more lenient and overall is more fun, as far as I'm concerned.
@HomeWorldSecuritySgt
@HomeWorldSecuritySgt 8 лет назад
Agree. It's chili for craps sake. The hard liners take it waaaay too seriously. Anyway...liked your post and hope to see more.

Thanks for watching and the comment. Yeah, I had never heard of it until someone at one of our chili contests said that we could use it as some of our 'throwdown' chili to give to the crowd if we were too busy making our competition chili for the judges. I'm sure the average person can tell the difference between canned and fresh chili, but this is one of the few that are least offensive.

As a native Texan, I resent anything with beans or tomatoes being judged as chili. "Texas Brand Chili" a refrigerated block chili is the closest thing to original San Antonio style chili. I knew some college professor types from Michigan, who would always buy cases of Wolf Brand Chili to take home every time they would visit. The Wolf Brand Home Style which you tested, may taste good, but is no more chili than McDonald's is a hamburger.
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 7 лет назад
I agree. These are not bowls of Texas red. Too many people like to add things. We competed in CASI and ICS. Believe me, we only added beans for the people's choice. Never to the stuff we fed the judges!

Good video & information. We had Polish hot dogs for lunch today and I, like you, don't always feel like going thru the whole process of making home made chili to throw on a couple of hot dogs. I'll be be picking up a couple of cans of the Wolf brand chili on my next visit to the grocery store. Thanks.
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 8 лет назад
Thanks for watching and good luck! Canned chili is really hit and miss depending on what is available in your stores. On the East Coast, we are kinda hurting for decent stuff. I agree that sometimes you don't want to mess with making it yourself, but if you have some ground beef and some decent chili powder and cumin, you can make some fairly quick. It's only when you have to simmer beef stew meat (even cut up) takes hours to break down. But ground meat cooks way faster and tastes way fresher than anything canned.

Gonna try wolf fast. Have always used Hormel’s with beans as my base. I will take small pkg o Mac and cheese.. add in garlic, onion more tomatoes etc. love this stuff. We used it in Afghanistan. Had cartons shipped to me.. me being an Army Major.. Hormels found out.. donated free but gosh it helped us so much. Filled us.. most guys even saved their bottles of hot sauce. We loved it crushed with saltines etc.

That's a great story. Nice of Hormel to help out. I'm guessing that was better than MREs? I was in the Navy during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. I got care packages from my mom. No chili, but got VHS episodes of In Living Color, Simpsons, and Married with Children. She'd kick in sticks of salami, boxes of Wheat Thins and sometimes HO HOs and Twinkies. But then I was 21 years old floating around in the Persian Gulf. What was I supposed to do?

ITR862 When we did CASI cook-offs, we have to bring a gallon a 'throwndown' chili for the crowd (in addition to the gallon we cook for the judges). Once they told us to use Wolf Brand Chili if we didn't feel like making our own throwdown chili. That was the first I have ever heard of it. It's here in Virginia too, but not in California. We used Nalley's with Walla Walla onions when we wanted canned chili.

Among the other varieties here, Stag chili & Dennisons chili are two widely distributed chili's in America..Although I have lived decades in or within 50 miles of San Antonio, Texas; I've NEVER seen or tasted Dennisons..But at annual chili cook-offs all over Texas, beans are are usually not allowed..for CANNED beaned varieties, Wolf brand gets my vote for taste, thickness, & fewest beans..
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 10 лет назад
I appreciate everyone's comments and support in viewing these videos. They are fun to make. For those on the West Coast, I like Denisons and Nallys (with Walla Walla onions). Those are not available out here. Wolf Brand Chili was not available on the west coast when we lived there, but Wal-Mart may carry them. Once again, I'm not a big fan of canned chili because either the canning process (or cheap ingredients) tends to kill the flavor, but they're OK in a pinch. I much prefer fresh chili, with or without beans to impress friends and family.

What difference does it make if it’s red
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 6 лет назад
Texas style chili is called "a bowl of red" because of the ingredients in it. It usually has paprika in it to help with that. When cooking competition chili in ICS for CASI cook-offs, the color (bright red) is one of the criteria judges look for. For home chili, it doesn't matter what you use. There is a 'green chili' that is usually Chili Verde using green chilies instead of red chilies and that's a whole different flavor.

you can make chili dog sauce in 15 minutes....ground beef, small can of tomato sauce, 1 tbs chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder. If you want greek style just add a pinch of cinnamon and allspice , a tiny amount of ground cloves and salt to taste. Of course you could always just buy a can of Castleman's Chili Dog sauce and add some freshly browned ground beef to it because it's soupy...but it's good for hot dogs. The problem with canned meats of any kind are they use the worst quality meat you can find. Better off buying some 85/15 ground beef or higher and getting quality.
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 8 лет назад
+BloozeDaddy Thanks for watching. You're right. I took a bit longer in making my chili. Don't know if you had a chance to watch my chili dog video (kinda crazy).
@bloozedaddy
@bloozedaddy 8 лет назад
Eric Learns to Cook will do...I make a larger batch of chili dog sauce....I keep a shaker with a mixture of chili powder/cinnamon/cloves that I can add to get the Greek style flavor if I want. Then I put smaller portions in quart size baggies and flatten them out and freeze them...makes it super easy if you're just gonna have a few dogs. Most canned chili is just horrific in my opinion...mostly a soupy mess..but I do like the flavor of Castleman's...there's just hardly any meat in it but it's a good base sauce if one doesn't want to go from scratch and just add ground beef. Take care.

Thanks for watching LeRoy. Glad you enjoyed it. Very nice your mom shipped the stuff overseas for you. All I asked for, when overseas was Wheat Thins, Gallo dry salami (can't get it in Japan), and VCR (yes, VCR) episodes of In Living Color, Married with Children and the Simpsons (back when Nancy Cartwright wasn't 80). Don't know if you had a chance to watch my other chili video, the one where I decided to make a chili dog without canned chili.

What difference does it make what it smells like?
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 7 лет назад
Many times you salivate and get excited when dinner is brought to you because you taste with your eyes (and often your nose) before you get a chance to actually taste it. When judging chili at competitions, we do the same thing. We judge what a sample of chili looks like (appearance), smells like, and finally what it tastes like. To a small degree. If food smells like fish, but it isn't fish, I'm not going to eat it because it could be spoiled. In this case, smell might be the x factor that propels a can's score over another can. I hope that helps answer your question. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it.

Eric Learns to Cook Thank you for your response. I agree that it`s important how some foods smell. As a person that have used a lot of brands of canned chili trying to find a good one, the smell or lack of smell has never played a role in how it taste. As a side note, after many years and many brands, I have yet to find a can of chili that I was satisfied with. Maybe it doesn`t exist.
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 7 лет назад
I agree. One example is cumin, lack of it or lack of a good brand. I was making some chili one day with cumin I bought at Sams Club. Big container of it was really cheap. It had NO FLAVOR. It had NO AROMA. was horrible. I added some of the decent stuff and woke it up. So in this case, the aroma (or lack thereof) was a symptom of cheap/crappy ingredients. But I do prefer good smelling food over no great smelling food. Canned chili is a pain to find, and you might not find it. I really prefer fresh chili. Rumor has it that Skyline chili (frozen is good, canned is bad) is tasty. So I'll see if I can find some. I'm thinking the canning process kills the meat taste, that makes them all taste the way they do. Then the greedier corporations are too cheap to put decent ingredients in there. Wish you luck on your quest, and thanks for watching.

A fairly accurate challenge. I only disagreed about the runner up and the winner. I believe Hormel to be the best because its more natural than the rest. Actually its really a matter of personal preference. Around here Hormel is king and way more accessible than Wolf. Wolf has a season that is more overbearing to me, might be cumin. I tried dollar store brands, tends to be greasy and nope. Amys is not bad but does not have that bite. Cambells chili is to industrial tasting. The one you missed is armour, a favorite among hobos. Thanks for the challenge video, it was fun. I will say I can eat any of these when in starvation mode.

I bought a can I thought I had just got a bad batch of Wolf Brand Chili near a decade ago. Once you heat it the stuff gets watery & the meat is not as chunky as it use to be. The original recipe used to be thick when heated & the meat was chunkier, one could put it on a hot dog & not loose a drop, now it just runs off. ConAgra Foods, Inc bought the brand back in May 1995 & has introduced the new Reconstituted Wolf brand chili, the new Reconstituted Wolf brand chili is no longer what it once was, it is obvious that ConAgra changed the recipe to save money.

This is very, very subjective, and I'm fascinated by the difference of opinion. I'm currently conducting my own canned chili test/review, and I've only tried (recently) Armour, Hormel and Southgate, all of them with beans. The only one I didn't continue to eat after the second bite was Southgate. Some people really like it, but for me the taste and quality are not there. It had very little chili flavor and was starchy/gluey. The meat tasted like TVP (soy), not beef. The Hormel on the other hand was pretty good, although I needed to add a small teaspoon of chili powder to give it a boost. It's easy to see why it's a big seller. The meat and beans were way better than Southgate. That said, IMO Armour had the best traditional chili taste of the three. It's thicker than Hormel, and has more chili powder in it. I didn't feel the need to add anything. People should read the ingredient labels, there's a big difference between the big brands and the dollar store brands. Good chili should read something like, "Water, Beef, Beans, Concentrated Crushed Tomatoes" and then less than 2% of other stuff like spices, starch, and flavorings. If the list is a lot longer, you may want to change brands. I need to try Wolf, Stagg and any other I can get my hands on. I'm off to buy more chili. Good video.

I like that you you did this challenge, cool to see different opinions, however, I gotta disagree on some of your choices. I use the "it smells like canned dog food a lot" when dealing with canned chili, and have become so sensitive to that smell after opening the can (not yet cooking it), I can't eat it! I have only tried Southgate, Hormel, and Wolf of the ones you taste tested. Hormel, in my opinion gets first place for the Alpo award. I agree with the Wolf chili being pretty good, but while in the can, is knocking on the dog food door. (Used to like Campbell's chunky brand stuff, but last 10-15 years, it's become watered down and disgusting, so I don't bother), lastly - Southgate Chili - opened can - NO DOG FOOD SMELL - cooked in microwave - tastes like actual chili with some flavor and heat. By far number one. It is far better than Wolf brand, which is runner up, but in my opinion, Southgate is the only canned chili that is actually good. Just my opinion. Have a great day.

Everyone's tastes and smells are different. This was my observation. Mostly for entertainment as some people LOVE dollar store chili while others loathe it. You enjoy the cheaper brand, so that's a good thing as you can save money over the more expensive national brands. Love the Dog Food Smell references. That is the truth. Thanks for watching!!!!

I use to make homemade chili all the time but the problem I always ran into was I ended up making a gallon of chili and be sick of it after two or three bowls so I switched to canned. you lose on taste but I don't like waste and it's cheaper to just by the canned versions
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 8 лет назад
+rick pen I agree that it can be frustrating (and expensive) to make homemade chili and get tired of it so fast. I feel the same way when doing chili competitions. I don't even want to eat it because it's too much hassle to make it. But I let the festival attendees eat it all up and toss out the stuff on the bottom of the pan. Since chili freezes really well, you can freeze it in sandwich or quart size Ziploc bags (just make sure you pack it so full there's no air and freeze them flat on cutting boards or baking sheets so the bag doesn't sag and get stuck in the shelf rack/wires). Or if you have a Food Saver, you can freeze them for up to a few years. Just avoid the frostbite that kills most frozen food.

Interesting video, comical too. All that being said, have you looked at the ingredients listed on the back of the Wolf Brand Chili? Check it out! It's not exactly the ingredients I use in my homemade chili. I'm not sure if or when the ingredients changed, but as a young girl 50 or more years ago there was quite a bit of beef included in the can. Now rolled oats is an ingredient. Food just isn't what it used to be and we're paying more for it and getting more sick from it with all the added preservatives and additives. Sorry I digressed. Bon appetit.

So we agree the Southgate Chili was just plain bad. I just had Southgate's beef stew. It wasn't bad at all. Very tasty, had some veggies, a few pieces of real beef and I guess the pieces that looked like sausage were the soy beef. I never heard of vegan soy meat substitutes being referred to as "Textured vegetable protein product". But once I realized what it was I was fine with that. It's cheaper than meat, tastes like meat(when soaked in broth) and is much healthier. I usually get Dinty Moore from Costco, but even that is a little chinsey with the meat and veggies. I usually fortify it with a can of mixed veggies, so it can get a little pricey for a canned meal. You guys should do a taste-off on canned stews or maybe generic vs. branded soups.
@EricLearnstoCook
@EricLearnstoCook 9 лет назад
Thanks for watching. So, you're saying that if I'm planning on making a beef stew show and I need some inspiration (canned beef stew is also usually dog food quality), that this might not be too bad? I'll give it a try if I see it. Thanks for the tip!
