Our family decided to take a 3 day trip exploring the Erie Canal onboard our lock master 42 house boat rental. The Erie Canal Adventures company located in Macedon, NY provides a full fleet of various sized house boats that are specifically designed to cruise the flat waterways and numerous locks of the Erie Canal.
Our boat had two bathrooms, two queen size beds and a conferrable dinette area for a total accommodation capacity of 4 adults an two children. It comes fully loaded with bedding, kitchenware and 125 gallon fresh water tank.
Erie Canal Adventures provides a full guided tutorial in the class room and on the boat prior to setting sail and also provides 24hr call assistance if needed.
We spent time in Fairport and Rochester for our overnight docking and made some short visits along the waterway.
It was a relaxing trip and cool to experience traveling through the locks and meeting the friendly people along the waterway and in the small towns.

British guy here, this is fantastic. I honestly didn't know you had anything like this in the US. I live on a narrowboat here in the UK and have watched many vloggers from England. Looks like you have a beautiful family and I hope they enjoyed the adventure. I'm sure you have given your children plenty of fantastic memories.

The canals were short lived in the USA. At 6 KPH it's the nation is too vast to cover any distance. The Mississippi River is over 2,000 kilometers long and going around the Great Lakes is over 1,000 kilometers. If a canal boat could cover 65 kilometers a day it would take weeks to sail from NYC to Chicago and that's not including if the Great Lakes try to sink you.

Good job. Your drone shots add a lot to this episode. You say uneventful, however the first several times I went through a lock on a boat I was thrilled. That was over 50 years ago.

Thanks for this video! If your family (especially your child) enjoyed this adventure, I'd recommend trying either the Trent-Severn or Rideau Waterways in Canada, both of which have more evolved tourism facilities than on the Erie, or if you're really adventurous, do the English canals, which are spectacular and amazing. Navigating the English canals is "work" because you have to operate all the locks and liftbridges, but you're surrounded by history and it's beyond pleasurable to do all the operation yourself. I haven't been on the Rideau but did a couple of weeks on the Trent-Severn a few years ago and highly recommend it!

Yes quite an adventure yesterday I helped a friend take his boat through the Hanwell flight in West London 8 locks in about 3 hours. Hard work but great challenge the people you meet on canals are wonderful all over the UK.

Your locks are massive I would love to have taken my boat through there. Over here in the UK you have to watch the locks when they fill as your boat can get swamped. As with another Brit, I too was unaware of canal boating in North America, looks great plus you have the better weather which can make a massive difference to the experience. Nice video sir!

Hi there. Yeah we docked a few times and took the bikes out for a ride. There were places to dock along the canal where you could tie up the boat and go for a ride. Was a little nervous to leave the boat but it was fine. Very peaceful area.

I knew about the Erie Canal, but did not know they had narrowboats to rent. While TDY to England I discovered narrowboats and fell in love with them. My wife came over the last week I was there and we rented a narrowboat for the day. Now for our 25 year anniversary we talked about renting one for a week in England. Looks like we can do the same adventure in our backyard. Thanks for the video!!!

fantastic video. We get a few of these boats all the way out past my front yard in Gasport NY. I make it a point to wave at them knowing they are probably new to the area and maybe even new to boating. I love this company and wish there were more of them on the canal and based all along the system. We need more destinations for them to visit. Also research ''the Great Loop''.

I never realized you could rent them alone. We fish the canal by boat all summer and these boats pass us all the time. We thought they were just guided trips like a bus. A travel trailer on water. Very cool.

Awesome thanks! You’ll have a great time I’m sure. You have the option to go east or west when departing after orientation and I would say definitely go west on the canal. When docked keep the doors and windows closed in the evening because the mosquitoes and moths attract to the light inside I spent an hour getting rid of them once they were inside. Very much like the British Narrowboats used to navigate their vast canal system. A little wider beam though. Some of the locks on the British canals are only 7 feet wide so boats are very restricted in width. It looks like a very relaxing way to see some of the country side while on vacation. Are there any live-aboard's on the Erie?

Yes I believe the inspiration for the owner came while he was on vacation in Europe so it makes sense that they are similar to the British boats. I did see many other types of boats along the canal that had permanent residents and other live aboard vessels.

these boats in the UK would be known as a Widebeam, however with a widebeam you're restricted to one end of the country or the other, as theres currently no widebeam connection between the southern and northern parts of the widebeam canal network (though plans are afoot to dig this 16 mile link in bedfordshire, to connect the grand union canal at Milton Keynes with the river great ouse at bedford, linking the northern and southern halves). With a 48ft long narrowboat (a narrowboat is 6ft 10in wide maximum) practically all of the canal network is accessible.

Great video. My wife and I have been watching alot of videos on narrow boating since the summer and would love to try it. Until seeing your video, we didn't know there were places you could rent them here in New York. Now we know, we are researching and planning on a week-long vacation for hopefully the summer of next year (2021). I have tons of questions, such as cost of the boat rental, how much boating experience is required, (we do own a 17.5ft boat we use for fishing on the Oswego River and on Lake Ontario), what gear to bring, ect. Do you know if there a web site we can go to or a marina we can contact to answer our questions? We live 2 blocks from Lock # 3 on the Oswego River (in Fulton, NY) and over this summer, we saw a few narrows go thru the lock headed north to the Lake (?) Which is what sparked our interest. Any info you can supply would be helpful and appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks! Yes the website can answer many questions and you can also call them directly. The boat is very easy to handle and doesn’t require any boating experience. They provide a thorough training the day you pick up. The price is depending on the amount of time you take it. We did a 3 day trip and it was $2,200. eriecanaladventures.com

FWIW, you might want to look into the Rideau Canal or Trent-Severn Waterway in Canada. Neither is that far from C. NY State where the Erie's located, and certainly a LOT closer than England :) We did 2 weeks on the Trent-Severn a few years ago and it was an exceptional vacation. We rented from Egan Houseboats on the TSW, and while their boats are a little on the "shabby" side, we had no mechanical issues and they're a LOT cheaper than other outfits providing rentals on the TSW. I would recommend Egan with the caveat that they aren't gold-plated.

Wow I had no idea this existed. I’m a huge fan of UK narrow boats. Do you think the lack of traffic was due to the pandemic, or is it always like that? Are there only a few places to moor?

Not sure what traffic was like pre- pandemic but we were on the eastern side of the canal and we were told it’s busier closer to Buffalo on the western side. There were plenty of places to moor along the canal that were not populated. We chose to stay in places that had restaurants and shops.
