Update 18hrs later or so. He stayed overnight at a hospital all scans checked out. He's going back to Ottawa for recovery. Everything so far seems like he is OK
a seizure after a bad concussion is always SO scary, and can be an indicator of major tbi. very much not dissimilar to tua's hit and subsequent seizure. god i hope he's alright.
can confirm. sustained a concussion after a baseball injury and began seizing as soon as I was in the ER. 3 days in ICU after that. that was 14 years ago and I'll most likely be on anti-seizure meds the rest of my life. seriously don't wish that / this on anyone.
I was at that game. The entire arena was so concerned and quiet. You could have heard a pin drop. As Islander fans, we couldn't care less if he was on the opposing team. We were all scared for Erik, and were hoping he would be okay. Seeing a player leave on a stretcher is upsetting. I hope he makes a full recovery.
any examples of this in the history the sport or? never once have i seen, in any sport, a broken vertibrae from falling flat on ones back from a standing position.@@aloysiusdevanderabercrombi470
@@goodnightmunchiedude’s having a seizure after hitting his head on the ice and you’re laughing saying he’s acting?? Seizures can be pretty scary to watch… Hope he recovers alright
At first glance maybe, but I don’t think clutterbick intentionally slew footed him he actually tucked his leg back. The Podzkolzin hit was a definite slew foot action
Unfortunately the only thing that helmets really do is stop the skull from cracking and prevent cranial bleeds. You can’t stop your brain from moving in your head when you have acceleration and then deceleration of the head
Oh my god, that’s so scary! I hope he’s okay! This is serious. I don’t think the hit was malicious in the slightest, but not a good hit. Hope he makes a full recovery. I don’t get anyone who says he was slew-footing or raising his legs up or anything. I just watched the replay and didn’t see that at all.
@@leafatheart Nah. At that speed and the angle of the hit, the glass slowed his upper body down more than his lower body and it just turned him. Unfortunate accident.
A similar situation happened with the Abbotsford Canucks where prospect Vasili Podkolzin began convulsing on the ice after hitting the ice. Scary thing. I hope Brannstrom is okay.
I would think any civilized society would show sportsmanship in a situation like this. Even though New York has a lot of uncivilized people gladly they are not in this arena.
Its always scary when a guy takes a nasty knock like this and there is some sort of movement afterwards. Reminds me of a few playoffs ago when Tavares took that knee to the face. He seemed to be trying to stand up immediately and it was scary as hell. I believe he was actually pretty incoherent and fighting the trainers at first who were trying to keep him on the ice and immobile. Scary stuff. I wish Brannstrom well.
Hit my head hard once and knocked myself out but I was biking, had a seizure after 3 minutes of unconsciousness and really haven't been the same since mentally, mostly put me into deep anxiety and depression and my memory isn't as good. Feel for the guy and hope he recovers well, coming from a leafs fan.
@@MrTedMcForehead You're dead wrong. Different types of injuries impact people differently. A brain injury can lead to both anxiety and depression, but are not caused immediately upon impact as an injury or illness.
Watching my boys play is one of the best things in life, but we are always conscious of the dangers of the game. Especially with the loss of Adam Johnson. I am glad he is going to recover fully.
Hoping for a speedy recovery! That was a scary hit (his head on the ice, not Clutterbuck smooshing him). I'm sure Clutterbuck felt 2 feet tall after that.
As a Rangers fan, I don’t like Clutterbuck cause of the jersey he wears, but he’s not a dirty player!! It was unfortunate positioning!! If that was a dirty hit those benches would’ve emptied!
Growing up here in Philadelphia I watched the Broad Street Bullies rule the NHL during the 70s. Playing street hockey and then ice hockey I have an affinity for the game. What I see now is getting ludicrous. Some of the hits really should be investigated by the police for their brutality. I love the game. I love the hitting. I don’t love the goons going after defenseless skaters though.
He is super lucky that he landed the way he did after hitting his head, he was already in the rescue position to protect against further damage from the seizure.
@@MrTedMcForehead brain damage or death. Seizures usually involve puking or excess salivating. That position allows it to clear your airway so you can keep breathing. Those leg movements may have just been him slowly coming back. Hopefully that's all it was. A concussion that leads to a seizure is never good.
It wasn't a dirty hit. Just a hard check where his legs got pinned in an unfortunate way for an extra hard head-first impact. It's a brutal sport. Hope he fully recovers.
Not gonna say it’s dirty but I’ve played hockey my whole life and clutterbuck knew exactly what he was doing. He tried dumping him after the hit, just not on his head.
@@sethoselken9562you’re an idiot. He lined up from 10 feet away and blasted him well after puck was dumped. No intent to injure in that play? Do you pull that shit in your beer league? Do u even skate? Toolbag
Anyone who says this hit was dirty is a 🤡 Its an almost textbook hit into the boards. Its just unfortunate he flipped and landed on his neck. Im a Rangers fan too. Trust me if I had legit chance to trash Clutterbuck I would, but facts are facts. I watched it many times and in slow mo. He comes at him from the side, no cross check. Just drives him into the boards and the guy happens to flip over. It actually happens all the time in hockey, just most times players are able to brace themselves for the fall. He just unfortunately ended up landing on his neck. Hope he makes a full recovery, but there was nothing illegal or dirty about that hit.
Not suspension worthy, but Clutterbuck should definitely have to answer the bell for it. You injure a player like that, you need to answer for it. Sad to see he never did
@ScentsofStyleforMen Nice try I just watched the clip not the whole game, and the only reason for the penalty was he was convulsed and hauled off in a stretcher, and FYI I've probably watched more played more and coached more hockey than you have. I played high level junior hockey and was quite good, I'll bet you don't even know how to skate!
Late hit, there needs to be a suspension. This is the type of hit we don't need in the NHL for obvious reasons. 8 game suspension or more people will get hurt.
Unfortunate on a routine play. Bizarre how it happens. Happened to me, separated my shoulder. Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary on the hit, the same as every other..
Frankly these hits need to be removed from the game. Players have all this gear on and they feel they can just hit people as hard as they can. They are wearing knives on their feet that we have seen kill other players.
The puck was long gone, those are the hits the league has to crack down on. You will never grow the popularity of your game with the marginal/goon player targeting the skill players
I am not a Don Cherry person, but I did like him describing Cal as "ButterCup" when he fought with his visor on. Ever since, Ive called Clutterbuck, ButterCup.
jesperi kotkaniemi while a habs got hit exactly the same way. going down body twisting, fells on back of neck-head-top of shoulders than head spans in a odd way. the back was the last thing hitting the ice. back of neck took everything. that is brain contusion and twitching like a bacon. I also was hit like that when younger and the kid was smaller but I dont remember shit and have not got up to 100? ever...
What are Clutterbuck's arms and left leg doing at 1:32? This is not a dirty hit per se, but he does throw in a subtle sweep at the end of the check to put his man down. He's among the best ever at taking the body. Hope the player is ok. LGI!
How many more accidents in hockey are we going to watch until they realize that these hard hits are uncalled for? The officials need to get on this series of incidences before someone else dies on the ice. I love my hockey but this is getting out of hand. It’s happening more frequently.
I hope Cal doesn't blame himself too much. The hit itself was perfectly clean, but the fall (and his head bouncing off the ice) was what really hurt him. It was just a freak accident that could have happened to anyone.
I know next to nothing about hockey, so this is a genuine question, not accusation. How was that a clean hit when he had passed off the puck well before being hit? It wasn't even close in that regard. Why hit someone into the boards who is no longer remotely in the play?
@@davrion I'm not saying Clutterbuck is dirty or anything like that. I don't recall him ever being suspended for anything. All I'm saying is the puck was well away when contact was made. Both players could have done better there. Clutterbuck was late, and the young Brannstrom needed to keep his head up and do a hockey stop to avoid a hit. Sucks a great career in the NHL might be over for it.
@PowerSysPsyOps what was the frame count, since that's how they measure "late"? You have a window of time to finish your check where it is NOT considered late
Clean hit not even too hard guy just looked like he fell really hard on that shoulder neck area glad to hear he is doing ok. It's always scary! When sime just gets hit wrong or falls wrong especially in a sport as fast and hard as hockey.
You see this sort of play all the time where the opponent brings the knee in behind on hits. Its partly for balance and partly to ensure the hit puts the player down. It’s kind of amazing we don’t see concussions more often from that sort of thing. Going over backwards like that makes you pretty defenceless, and being a big tall guy makes it worse.
This is the right take. I've previously commented here that this was a slew foot, but my earlier comment wasn't quite right... It's similar to a slew foot. Something needs to be done to get rid of using a leg to take a player down like that on a hit. Not sure *how* honestly, since it's hard to see in real time, but it's just far too dangerous to not do anything. This time it was a concussion, but the next time it might be a broken neck that paralyzes someone.
@@dooodooo3474 it's the fact that he used his leg to take Branny's legs out from under him. That is what makes slew footing so dangerous and the same thing happened here. Lots of slew foots don't involve contact with the actual skate (watch any slew footing compilation). The key difference here is that the initial primary contact was the hit on the upper body and the contact from the leg came after the initial contact.
I hope Erik brannstorm is ok after taking a hit and landing like that i have never seen anyone land like that watching hockey legs 🦶🦶 straight up hopefully his back 😲
It's all to blame for the stupid rule allowing a player to be hit after he plays the puck. How many players have to be crippled for life to change that?
To everyone saying, "Gosh I hope hes ok". It's highly likely he won't be ok long term. Short term, yeah maybe he'll be back in the ice. There's enough evidence out there about the effects these head injuries have in all contact sports. You go on the ice, the NFL field, an AFL field, a boxing ring, you are at really serious risk of really long term consequences from head injuries. Yet they do, and we all watch. I do, you all do. And we hope to see them back. But no, he is highly unlikely to be ok.
Such a statement merely proves that you know nothing about hockey as the location of the puck is completely irrelevant. There have been goals scored prior to clean hits, nothing strange about it. I suggest you start watching football instead, your kind of sport full of gamesmanship. Leave hockey to people that actually know the game.
trust me when i say, we are much more tired of house league gen z fans like yourself whining about physicality in the sport. the game is a shell of what it once was, viewership reflects this, and it's almost entirely on you.
@@MrTedMcForehead I’ve played hockey longer than you’ve been alive, you brain dead internet troll. I’m fine with physicality but there’s zero reason to lift a player up on the boards and slam them on their head. It happened with Elias Petterson as well. Stop talking about the game being a “shell” of its former self. The league has developed into a much more skill based game. You wouldn’t know that though because you’re a fat casual that’s ever touched the ice
@@incumbentvinyl9291 oh look. Another internet troll that doesn’t understand the basic rules of interference in a sport they’ve never played. Guaranteed you are a 400 pound hillbilly that started watching hockey after discovering Shoresy on Hulu one night after you engorged yourself with Oreos and Cheetos
I remember back in the day when a player would get checked to knock him off the puck, and not hit for just a dump in. But nowadays players are taught to finish the check.
