In this video, I ask the question; is Eris as busted as commanders like Yuriko and Derevi? (Maybe watch until the end where I answer that questions!). Playtesting has shown that the cost reductions you can create with the right build invalidate commander tax and let us do dumb things with our commander to deal lots of damage and draw lots of cards. Turn 3, 30 damage - Eris is WILD. AND if you look for an Izzet budget land base, it become a cheap to build menace.

Hi! I just wanted to write a message to let you know that I really appreciated the video. I am also very interested in Eris because the deckbuilding challenges that arise from him. I also think that those who are being needlessly negative in the comments did not watch until the end of your video. You make very good points and very good inclusion suggestions. Thank you! :D

Thanks, appreciate this comment. Plenty of discussion going on in the comments, which I welcome. I play, and have played Yuriko, a bunch of times and the experience with Eris has had some crossover - 30 damage on turn four with Eris last night, coupled with his huge discount - I definetly felt some Yuriko adjacent feelings! And totally yes, many haven't made it to the video where I answer the question I posed - I think Eris is magnificent design and I've never said that about an Izzet commander ever haha. If people didn't get to the end, I'll just have to get better at keeping their attention, which I'm excited to do!

Having 4 different mana values isnt that hard, having 6 is reasonable, but having 8 is nothing to scoff at. Anything beyond that is christmas land.

Frantic Search, and all of Red's "Pitch a card, draw 2" effects make this a lot easier than you think.

It's amazing how often I have 8 plus different mana values in the yard - the combination of drawing over 7, pitching cards and just casting spells, make it surprisingly consistent.

You are correct that Eris is the only one with flying and prowess, but Adeliz, the Cinder Wind gets pretty darn close

Can you explain the reasoning behind the bounce creatures to top of deck theme? Is this intended for use as removal?
@mtgspecs
@mtgspecs Месяц назад
Sure, no problem. I played against this build yesterday and had my commander bounced with one of these spells - the decision to return to the command zone and incur command tax vs leave on top and take the tempo loss, I. E. not being able to draw a new card that could help while I was behind contributed to me losing the game. With non commander creatures, the same tempo loss occurs and I've found it an interesting way to look at removal - in a sense, if your opponent can't draw more than one new card, you've 'time walked' their ability to bring a new element to their game plan or to the board state.

It does. I bought loads of stuff for Sauron wheels so there's a few blue and red wheel effects I could sub in.

I would say it's closer to Karador levels of mana cheating than Derevi or Yuriko, and much like Karador you can interact with it by just exiling the graveyard, and now they have to figure out the mana cheating again instead of just having it. I would say good not broken

Appreciate this comment! Yes, there is some element of hyperbole in my set up question, prompted by playing Eris. I kept seeing what he can do and thinking, where did that damage output come from and, they just killed him, where did this board state come from 😂 - and it reminded me of Yuriko. Definetly those vibes! I totally hear you on the graveyard removal, Farewell is going to nuke this, which is fair to say for so many strategies. I think the thing that puts this over the edge is the dragon tokens having prowess in a deck powered by instants and sorceries - without that, I might not be quite so dramatic ☺️.
@addictedtomints9433
@addictedtomints9433 2 месяца назад
Its instant and sorcery mana values only though? The first time you cast it will be cheap but it will probably be a few turns. You can also clump up your hand with random larger spells or you put in self-mill, which are cards that effectively cost mana earlier to reduce your commander later. I dont think its that crazy of a card though pretty decent. Each dragon is super strong but you most likely have bigger spells in your hand or you used up all your cheap spells trying to get it out faster, unless you time it well. The card should be cheaper when you summon it so you can cast other spells on the same turn which is nice. Seems like a menace when you get it down to 2 mana and have that fifth spell in the graveyard to summon it for 2 again but 4 mana isnt bad either. Its when you get unlucky though I see this card having some consistency issues.

Frasntic Search and Pull from Tomorrow have extreme value here, though I will posit that Pull from Tomorrow is particularly forboding to cast, due to I think it's 4 blue pips
@addictedtomints9433
@addictedtomints9433 2 месяца назад
@@VulcanHeStan Frantic search would be nice just to discard and you wouldn't have to pay mana but are you sure your thinking of pull from tomorrow? Haha it's only X and 2 blue pips.

@@addictedtomints9433 draw x and discard 1? I thought it was more than that? Might have it confused with another
@addictedtomints9433
@addictedtomints9433 2 месяца назад
@@VulcanHeStan The discard is nice and you'll probably need some refill so you could choose this card. You might have large mana cost reducers too like Mindsplice Apparatus in the deck(for da big spells), but I somewhat think it'd be better to only run cards that cheat their way into the graveyard. Pull from Tomorrow counts as 2 mana in graveyard too which you will probably have a lot of 2 mana things. It might be worthwhile to try both versions though. Also, cuz Mindsplice Apparatus is cool haha.

@@addictedtomints9433 I use Surge to Victory, Pull from Tomorrow and Frantic Search in my Magnus the Red deck, so theyre on my mind, though I usually play Gruul and Boros "Turn things Right" style of decks, so Ill admit, not used to spellslinging kinda stuff, so Ill peek at the cards you mentioned and see. Yeah, you can NOW. Hence why the first 30-ish seconds of the video describes back before that specific rules change. There's a reason no one runs Spell Crumple or Hinder anymore, but they used to be near-mandatory in blue decks.

@mtgspecs Ya, one of my fave commanders is Verazol. The commander tax means more copied spells and more potential commander damage. I think they need to be more careful with wording. They've been doing some broken stuff lately... don't even get me started on Ward.
@mtgspecs
@mtgspecs 2 месяца назад
@@Zeromus5555 Verazol is a beast indeed. Ward is a wierd one - I like the mechanics to have a frame of reference. I know why something has trample - it's big, it's unstoppable or why something has haste - there's speed baked into its dna. What qualifies something to have ward?

"Land for turn, Bajuka Bog, target [Eris Player]'s graveyard?" This card is nowhere near as broken as Yuriko and Derevi. It's more in the wheelhouse of Karador, Ghost Chieftain and Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer, One having not been a problem in over a decade, and the other seeing minimal play. Half of this video sounds like chicken little yelling the sky is falling. Very cool of you to save that point until the very end of the video to boost your watch time percentage though.

i mean thats the weakness of any graveyard reliant deck, most dredge type decks aren't exactly competitive, however in low and mid level pods a lot of players dont run grave hate unless they're an artifact deck and happen to have a tormod's crypt or a black deck with bajuka bog. you'd be surprised how many ppl overlook putting bajuka bog in their decks though.
