Watching Dan clean out the attic reminds me of when our 6 year old son was asked to clean his room. When I went to check later, I was astounded at the great job he did. Then we went outside and discovered he'd just pitched everything out the window and unto the lawn. Your progress is exciting.
Who else has a cement mixer in their kitchen😊. Thank you for inviting us into your home and the journey with your renovation. Chandelier shopping I think 💭Nice rustic one. 💐
I'm so proud of you both. You are doing an amazing job on the renovations. -- I want to make a suggestion, having lived this same exact detail in the renovation of my parents home. -- Consider removing the beams... and before you say no I want you to walk back into that room and stand on against the wall, side by side, and face the fireplace. See how the beams bring the room focus down? If the beams are gone it will expand the room and open it up tremendously. Now you can still have beams. Once you finish work on the ceiling above and have the ceiling in... lay beams across it in the opposite direction they are going now... but put those beams directly against the ceiling. This will give you the effect of a cathedral ceiling. We did this in my parents home in their living room and every and every time people came in for the first time you would hear them gasp. It is a dramatic effect that is breathtaking. I'm looking forward to seeing more. BIG HUGS and continued success.
Dan and Annalise, if you go to the same brocante that Stephanie goes to, I think you'll be able to find a fantastic chandelier for a reasonable price. You're doing a great job, as usual.
Ahhh that was too short😀you were right dan👍the kitchen will look fabulous when it's finished 😀loving the rollers on annalise 😉you both deserve a break😀enjoy your evening at lalande 🤗🤗
We did miss you, but that's great you got to go out and have fun. Please don't remove the beams as some have advised. You just cleaned them and they look great and add character. If you ever change your mind, you could easily add floorboards. I did miss my weekly dose of Jack and Thomas...they always put a smile on my face and make my day.
Hi Dan and family! As someone suggested, put one small ceiling fan up there, I had one and it makes a huge difference in a high ceiling. In summer you can have it turn so the air is drawn upwards, and in winter it can turn the other way to direct warm air down, makes a huge difference! And if you think about taking the beams out, how about a comprimise and just have them raised so they are up higher? The beams are still a really nice feature but I agree if they are low they just make the space feel smaller. And Please do a video tutorial all about Lime Mortar use, what kind of supplies to buy, how to mix it, how to use it. We have an old byre to restore in the Scottish Borders and need to do lots of this! There's also cement to remove in some areas. Lovely family!
To many beams you can tell it was meant to have a floor up there. My opinion is to take out the beams and hang a large chandelier, brass would be nice. Continue the brick front fireplace all the way to new height of ceiling to make is cohesive. But whatever you do I will love it. Annalise is a lovely person,so sweet.
It will be fab when done, but so much dust, you should get a better face mask Dan. Lovely to hear you’re going for a nice Sunday lunch at LaLande, enjoy, you both deserve it after all that hard work. WCL
I was just about having heart failure watching Dan cleaning out the top floor with the gaping hole in the middle of the room -I was worried he was going to step into the gap!!
Wishing you both the best and hope that watching the adverts helps. You are both fantastic and deserve to have a gorgeous house...... Can't wait for the progress to continue✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅
Just FYI.... to help with the adverts, especially long ones, I sometimes go to the vlog, put it on mute, open another tab whist that one is on and watch something else (or just doing chores around the house.) Just saying
I suggest a spray foam insulation between the ceiling beams because it’s more effective for less bulk, making sure to protect from getting it on the beams, then put in drywall or plasterboard or something and mud over the whole drywall up to the beams so it resembles old plaster walls, to match your ones below
Dan, I watch a lovely gal on Garden Answer- RU-vid in the US and she has lots of boxwoods in her massive gardens. Please take a look at her June Garden Tour//Garden Answer from June 15th, 2019 at 14:25 she has a beautiful example of what I think you are going for around Stephanie's fountain, only squared off. I hope you will see this note and it is helpful. Love all the work you are showing us. Thank you for taking us along with you.
What exciting progress you’ve made!! The open ceiling looks amazing! Thank you both for continuing to share your progress, I know how very busy you both must be, thank you. Your videos never fail to brighten my day. Keep up the great work!
Aanalise I am so loving the curlers lol you did an amazing job at La Lande cutting hair wish you were my hairdresser 💇🏻♀️ awesome job! Good pointing Dan it looks beautiful!!!
Holey moley Dan you sure don't mess around - you're gittin er done!!! Yes quite right - we won't see the many trips back and forth to the truck to clean out all the rubble. Looking good. 👍
at 9:40 when Dan started dumping everything over the "edge"...I laughed and felt SO MUCH enjoyment watching all that stuff just get kicked to the ground level! VERY Satisfying!!
You would need to get one very large vintage wrought iron Or old brass light fitting that would look like it had candles burning , it would be in keeping with your rustic french kitchen that your after.
Great job Dan. Annalise I loved your haircuts at LaLande, I hope you get to use your talent, maybe a little salon in one of the outbuildings??? Or do weddings in chateau??
that's it it will look beautiful with the chimney exposed ... so good :-) keep it on 💜💙💚💛🧡 but you should remove the beams near the chimney , it will look better , take a second look Dan ..
The space looks amazing opened up! Love the idea of a chandelier. And love the idea of a ladder with a bit of storage. It would be cool to figure out a library rail system for the ladder. I think those give a beautiful esthetic and it would make the ladder stable and accessible all the way across the room if you had an area that ran the length on one side.
Annalise and Dan, lovely video. You'll want to take it slow during the process, only because you have an idea of what you want to do, but sometimes other opportunities will show up. I actually thought it would be nice to have some small lighting going around the wall to kind of backlight the beams, using some ambient lighting. Anyway, waiting to see what you pick.
Dan that looks great. love the look. Yea!!! This will look so good exposed. Great decision ... What an amazing difference, and yes a chandelier would be so beautiful and special with the rustic look of the beams and stone. Love this!
@@escapetoruralfrance 🐦Very humane of you! There is tall🌱bush a few feet outside our front door under the eaves where the hummingbirds love to nest. It's a bit safer there from other predatory birds. In season, the tiny mummy bird will dive bomb our heads in defense as we come & go😞. 🦅 In Cali, there are over 30 species of raptors. See a lot of regular hawk & owl activity living in the foothills of ⛰Verdugo Mtn Range in the East San Fernando Valley. Up to 6 hawks @ once will cruise in high altitudes above our heads in these circular air currents🌬. It's very cool to behold. 🦉The owls are on the prowl for night shift. They work the same territory as hawks. When I walk from my neighbor's house, their loud "who's" can be a symphony. On a full moon, I can catch a glimpse of one perched on a power pole surveying their territory. Growing up, a petite teen with a mop of curly hair came hustling up to our house yelling bloody murder one night. She had been walking down from a friend's house to her own. While under a canopy of trees just above us, an owl swooped down on her head from the back. She didn't get hurt, but it scared us all😨. 🥚Big black ravens & crows are also a threat to eggs & fledgings, so I try to wave them away when I see them around a nest. Interestingly enough they'll sometimes attack hawks before try to strike other birds like chickens. They will also sound an alert when those other birds of prey are about. Crows are very smart, social & amusing to watch forage & hang together. They'll gang up on birds & critters they perceive as a threat🤜. 🍎They will also line apples from the property above our house along our upper fence. Three will gather on a post to leisurely eat it. When they fly away, the squirrels will zero in on the booty they left behind 🐿.
great work you're doing with your bakery room section of the house. I imagine the fact that you're doing it all by yourselves keeps the costs reasonable, but the progress slow. It seems like that from your working perspective anyway. Particularly with colder weather coming on. I think leaving the ceiling open will make the room feel larger than it does now, but might allow the heat to rise into that space. perhaps if ceiling fans are available there it might help keep the heat forced toward the floor level and keep you all a bit warmer.. they aren't always the prettiest fixtures but they're quite effective. I'm sure you'll find the solutions that work for your new look in the house. Its great seeing you forge the path to making your house the epitome of your passions for it .
You two are such hard workers and I think it is coming along quite fast, considering all the other of parts of life that are going on with you as well.Like two small boys jobs outside the home and all the rest. I hope you get time for a date night every now and then as we have to take care of ourselves to be good for anyone else would you not agree. This grandma from USA would watch those cute little guys for an evening so you could go out if I could. So many great memories of watching my grandsons the only problem is they grow up so fast.Cheers to you both and your adorable family!!!💗☺💗
Love the idea of having a very small section up the top for storage. Could be a whole pantry up there. And the ladder could be one of those ones that move along it all on wheels. Must admit I think it would look great if you took the rest of those beams down so you look straight up to the roof... even add some velux for more light and you can open them in the summer.
Annalise, as soon as I saw the ceiling height I thought, “there’s room for not just one, but TWO amazing chandeliers!” Lol I agree, I think you’ll find something amazing at Emmaus. Can’t wait to see what you choose! Sending your family love from Miami Beach, Florida USA 🤗
Please tidy up before you start knocking things to bits and tell Annalise to put done proper shoes on tidy workman less risk if having an accident. Looking good tho
Loved the pointing you did on that column. What a difference that makes. What a lot of debris from up above. Next video will be nice to see it all gone. We'll really get a sense of how big that space really is. Good job. Cheers.
You are doing a wonderful job Dan. I did not realize how large the new kitchen will be. Love the exposed beams. So looking forward to the next story. Hope you both had a wonderful evening. Hugs
Wow, it is literally like night and day from when we first saw this space. Great progress! Keep up the good work...it is going to be amazing when it is finished!
Love watching you all each week. Glad you made loft open. Are you going to use white insulation pieces I’ve seen other Chateaus use to fill between beams? Looking forward to next week.
Unlike 📸Instagram where everyone is shown living their perfect life, the behind-the-scenes reality is that beauty takes true effort & sacrifice. 🛏 Few of us roll right outta bed & look divine. 👌Go ahead & wear your curlers with pride! Maybe a scarf too when crazy dust is milling about! TeeHee. Although next time, you could give us a glimpse of you glammed up too.😁
Great vlog, Dan, and Annalise...so pretty, even in rollers. You're both getting more experience with all the camera stuff, and it shows. I wish I could snap my fingers like Annalise and send a work crew to lend a hand. What a job! The little bread house kitchen is going to be unique, cozy and gorgeous. Truly a labour of love. Such a darling couple you are. What fun to look forward to a dinner party at Lalande. Loads of laughter and love all around. Hugs dear ones.
I just found you 2 and your very smart boys. It quite entertaining .I myself have a culinary back ground.. And now I up cycle funiture. So I totally understand your creativity. I know you two will make a very warm felt home.. Good luck ...
The roof insulation could be covered with plywood which is set back from the roof joists so as much of them as possible are left exposed. 0.5mm would be thick enough to cover the insulation well and then could be painted / stained. As I type this I realise that you would have done something by now so can't wait to find out what as I play catch up on your great vlogs!!
What dimention are you imagining for the chadelier? I have an antique 5 arm brass fixture with 5 glass shades I would gladly donate. It graced my home for years and I brought it to my new condo hoping to use it.
💐Very kind of you to offer! Stickler about proper balance & scale in a room, esp. one with large or tall proportions. Guidelines to properly size ceiling fixture(s). Happy you gonna keep a little mezzanine, but not for storage. Have a readying/art area. Somewhere that one can be close to the heart of the house (kitchen) but also not too close.
Happy to hear your going to have an open ceiling with exposed beams!!! It's amazing to see all the hard work you both put into renovations. The room is looking so bright now! Love from Vermont
