I must be older than you guys. Nolans team would have converted several dunks or layups when those opportunities presented themselves. Head down and bulldoze through will more than catch up to him.
If Chris Lykes wasn't following the coaches instructions, he would have been pulled. He shoots Free throws lights out and is not likely to turnover the ball. It worked, obviously.
@@JesusChristISTHEONETRUEGOD players like him? entitlement? that's not his rep, and hasn't been. Even in H.S. when he was ALL-MET P.O.Y. ....p.s. I went to Gonzaga (before him) but I followed his career. Had a rep for being humble
The way his playing the game will catch up 2him especially in this era, look at Westbrook. Also if that's the strategy & coach orders it's very risky. You don't reinvent the wheel as it pertains to how the game is fundamentally played. If that's a tactic then may as well put 5 great F.T on the floor & play for F.Ts .
Genuinely fascinating how these people can announce games for a living and not understand the value of your best free throw shooter keeping the ball in his hands when the other team is fouling intentionally to extend the game.
Maybe bc in most scenarios like this where you try to break the press you get the ball to the open player when a player has 3 defenders on them. There was all kinds of things that could have gone wrong with this play it just so happened it worked out for them. It's like getting pissed at a player for a shooting a bad 3 but he made that shot.
@@daebak7370 he's also 5'7 getting trapped by 3 people taller than him which means he would've had to make a jump pass on the move which is actually more risky than what he did. He made the right play.
@@michaeldubiak4710 They where intentionally fouling to extend the game. I've seen PLENTY of college basketball teams blow leads trying to pass through presses like you're supposed to. The shots where forced but I really don't mind him dribbling through the traps as long as he gets the job done. He did.
I’m not a basketball analyst or anything but in this sequence of possessions, he didn’t turn the ball over, got fouled, and made EVERY free throw. What else can you ask of your point guard?
They showed a 2 minute clip. If you watched that whole game, he was doing the same thing all game. That’s how he plays, a lotta NBA players play the same, like Tatum..Had to get called out by teammates. It’s only a “issue” because it’s a commentator
Just cause it worked out this time doesn't mean it was good basketball lol no way u can watch one guy dribble allover the court with 3 dudes on him and refusing to pass it to the open dude the right or a good play whether it happens to work out this time or not lol good thing ur not a coach either
"We got Chris Lykes over here who is a perfect million for a million from the FT line, and 4 open Shaq's. Why wouldn't he pass to the Shaq's. I just don't get it. The Shaq's are all open - disregard his career 52% free throw percentage." This is what that analyst would say....... should be fire.....
LOL. What a dolt. Of course he was holding on to the ball. He's obviously their best free throw shooter and K State needed to foul to stop the clock. This is like pretty standard basketball for the last 50 or 60 years.
@@InfoOnly2U he’s like 5’6 try passing over a double team against two 6’3 and taller guys and tell me how that goes. If he floats a pass then it’s anyone ball if he stops moving then he’s trapped
@@charlienutt3941 Telling your best free throw shooter to pass the ball late in the game when he's perfect from the line with an established lead is beyond ignorant.
Obviously the commentator hates Arkansas and wants them to lose because you always want your best free throw shooter at the line at the end of the game and that was Chris Lykes. This commentator should be fired for pure ignorance
This announcer must of never played ball before ? When your 5’9 getting trapped by 3 guys 6ft and up it’s not that easy getting a good pass off to your teammates, Lykes did right in my opinion
@@slammysammy9555 yeah it’s very clear he has the green light to hold the ball his teammates aren’t mad at him, and on a lot of those the guys weren’t as “wide open” as the announcers said, lots of defenders in the area to intercept the ball or pickup ball the same exact way they would’ve on Lykes
@@slammysammy9555 its a bad option to pass tho, theyre baiting it cos they dont want to foul they want a steal so hold the ball cos he has handles and speed
I remember that game. It seemed that the coach wanted Lykes to have the ball in his hands towards the end of the game due to his great free-throw shooting ability. It was a strategy for the team not selfishness on behalf of Lykes.
If it was strategy it was 1) bad, clearly and 2) he played selfish the entire game which is part of the reason why KSU had cut their large lead in half late. They and he just got lucky. He’s also not “great”. He’s good. And there were multiple actual starters and leading scorers on the court who shoot in the high 70’s to his 82%.
Actually this is 100% false. The talking heads are NOT paid to be expert analysts; they're commentators. Sure they need to have a great grasp of the game and do some mild analysis, but play-by-play guys/gals are generally just moderately intelligent. 9 times out of 10 the super smart, intellectual person won't even be considered for the job. Most people (the viewers) have average intelligence and a huge chunk of folks are even dumber than that (no shade just a pure unequivocal fact). Networks look for people who are relatable, entertaining and somewhat knowledgeable... they're definitely not looking for some whiz kid that will only alienate half the audience with shi that's over their head. Many people are just casual fans who just want to turn their brain off, relax and pass some time, NOT get a Phd on the intracacies of basketball strategy. On top of that, controversy, sensationalism, debating, conflict, and negativity SELLS!! If the commentator knew what he was talking about; this revenue-generating video wouldn't even exist. I wouldn't be surprised if the commentator is intentionally stirring up shi for ratings and content. These networks do their research and they know what's up. This commentators antics are EXACTLY what doing a good looks like, yet many of the "commentators" here in this comment section don't know what THEY'RE talking about and think hes doing a bad job. Isn't that a beautiful irony that goes right back to the fact that many people are just not that smart.
I understand criticizing a player on broadcast, that's part of the job, but to single him out and act as though he was doing something wrong when he really wasn't is really odd. Lykes didn't do anything wrong, he didn't turn the ball over, got fouled and sealed the game at the line by making all of his free throws. If the coach was upset with the way Lykes was handling the end of the game, he would've called one of his three remaining timeouts and talked things over or pulled Lykes from the game entirely.
things is that we see lots of awful shots in basketball. this announcer said it three times in three different ways. way too dramatic. something is wrong with that dude
Stephen Chesser Not awful necessarily but not the shot you want with 16 left on the shot clock. The second shot was bad, but the end game was obviously how they planned it since he shooting FTs lights out
He actually did his job as a point guard to perfection from what I saw; Made himself available on each inbound, controlled each possession, had zero turnovers, went to foul line where he was clutch....
@High DFS situation situation situation. His job at those possessions is not to facilitate. K State is in desperation mode with the clock against them so it’s a game of take care of the ball, kill clock, and knock down the free throws. And if Arkansas feels like they can only trust their pg in this situation then I guess they did what they did and it worked. Obviously dude, this won’t work all game where u need offensive flow to be successful
@High DFS You’re as dumb as the commentators, he’s intentionally keeping the ball so he can drain the free throws, i bet his coach isn’t complaining. Commentators are hanging from Lyke’s nuts.
@@Cookiesr9565 passing the ball around in the situations can also lead to bad passes/turnovers and possibly points on the other end. Instead, he had 0 turnovers, got to the line, and knocked down the free throws.
I remember when announcers was saying the samething about Jordan when he played against Larry bird and the Celtics, saying he was selfish, cocky and someone was going to make him put his tongue back in his mouth. 63 points later and over the years he's considered the GOAT . They should just announce the game and keep their personal agendas too themselves.
@drew Jack I'm a Jordan fan. The only thing is, he never beat Larry Bird and Celtics in the playoffs. The 63 points was a great feat but his teams took the L. When he got a better team it looked more phenomenal because they won a lot.
This is the type of coach who gets "his type of guys" and they play fundamental basketball but lose. Rather things be done "the right way" instead of doing what works with your personnel. He had the ball in his hands because they couldn't stick with him and he makes free throws. Also, his teammates did a poor job at spacing and balancing the floor. Many of the times "guys were open" they were bunched up behind him.
Good job Chris Lykes. Great ball control, patience, and drive. He is playing his position to the fullest. He was forcing the opposing team to guard him hard. They did. He can ball.
“If I’m Muss I’m saying pass…” I’m glad that guys not Muss, then. Super obvious Muss wanted Lykes shooting free throws so he told him to keep the ball. I don’t know why the announcer is incapable of common sense.
@@dannyj6130 that’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m saying it’s obvious that Lykes was who they wanted shooting them, and they were going to foul. The announcer was blaming Lykes when it was obviously Musselman that told Lykes to hold onto it.
Announcers are people that never played after high school or college. If they don't know a guard who can nail free throws is controlling the game, go home and sleep off the booze.
@@TheMan750 Correct. Color Commentators are the ones with experience inside that level of competition. I don’t agree with the color commentator in the situation, but I’m not salty enough to disregard the profession like the OP did 😂
Glad i wasnt the only one that felt this same way...in my high school days we had a cpl guys that were pure at the line and our coach made sure we knew in a close game we were to get it to them the get out oftheir way. They would get fouled and ez pts were added to the scoreboard. Its not quantamphysics
These announcers were more annoying than Lykes’s missed shots. The kid is actually really good he just needs time to get on page just like the rest of the players on our team.
Tbf he’s automatic at the ft line and I kept waiting for him to miss one and tbh if he kept doing that without the coaches instructions he’d get pulled I think that’s what the coach wanted
The announcer is really a piece of work!! If Lykes was so bad, the coach would have benched him!! He did exactly what they wanted!! Get fouled and make the foul shots! He never missed!
0:20 - 0:36 : "Players tend to stand and watch him." Then, those players need to move around and try to get into better position. Them standing around isn't his fault, and he can't get them involved if they're not doing anything. 0:42 - 1:17 : "Some bodie(s) have to be open." He could've gotten the ball back to #0 momentarily. However, while you may have teammates 'open', that doesn't mean you have a passing lane open and throwing a bad pass out of a triple-team can easily result in a turnover. 2:10 : He does need to keep from letting them push him to the sideline. He could've made the long pass to the corner out of the back court. Once he got into the front court, they were playing his passing lanes and the only one open for him was #4 (which he should have passed to), but he was fouled again from behind. Oh, and did they notice that, Arkansas was leading? Sure, he needs to work on passing the ball more. Not debating that at all. However, what he was doing was working, which is why they were winning. The D tried to swarm him but continually fouled him and sent him to the line, where he was knocking down free throws. If his team were the ones down by 8 and he was constantly missing free throws or not even getting to the line, I could understand the harshness of their criticism. But throwing bad passes out of double and triple teams can result in turnovers and points on the other end.
When he didn't pass out of a triple team, it was because he wanted to get fouled. If the lead was larger he would have passed to run clock. The game was still pretty close and his getting to the line---and making his FT's put the game out of reach.
You can clearly see that lykes is indeed fully aware of what's going on and has good court awareness, he can draw those fouls etc he's doing with the coach tells him.
If he wasnt doing what he was supposed to do, the teammates wouldn’t be feeling pretty good about the whole situation in the team huddles and Lykes wouldnt be on the court period
The reason Lykes held onto the ball might be ether they want him shooting the free throws or because he's genuinely short and can't throw it over somebody who's a foot and a half taller then him very easily.
If you know muss's game strategy, he slows the game down with a good lead, even states it post game. Lykes was torching 🔥 triple teams, didn't have to pass ,that was the game plan
Me and my dad were talking abt this when the game happened, it’s honestly disgusting how horrible he was as a announcer, at least do your research on a team if ur gonna attack them the way he did
They're not hating on him. They're absolutely right I agree with what they are saying. He just lucky he made all the free throws he did otherwise he could have cost Arkansas the game
@@matthewanderson5163 he's 'lucky' he's clearly an amazing free throw shooter. If K State is gonna foul the Hogs over and over it should be Lykes cos I Lykes to win
you really want the smallest dude on the court passing over three guys 1ft+ taller than him or running past them because hes the quickest on the court.
This is basic basketball iq. If it’s a close game with little time you get the ball to the man who can shoot free throws. It just so happens that Chris is shifty making it hard to foul or turnover immediately therefore extending the play only to ultimately head to the line. It’s smart, Chris is smart, Miss is smart, this announcer… not so much
I’m gonna assume Muss wanted him to draw the fouls toward the end but he did throw some pretty good bricks up earlier. If you’re gonna chuck it when you’re not open you need to hit one occasionally.
Chris Lykes - starting point guard at Gonzaga HS for 3 years in the toughest league in the country. DC Catholic League. Starting point guard for Team Takeover. Only undefeated team in EYBL. Kid can flat out hoop. Not worried what anyone at ESPN says.
These commentators haven't been paying attention to arkansas. Hogs had that game. They're a very confident team and could have clamped k-state that late in the game and both teams knew it
been watching this kid since he was at Gonzaga. Always a winner. Always coachable. I'd guess he was instructed to keep ball in his hands. He doesn't turn ball over and he's a very good ft shooter...missing a shot is better than a TO. Especially when winning, after running 20 seconds off clock late in game. Notice he made EVERY ft down stretch
Being a little hyperbolic. I watched it, the guy was simply making his point that he should get the team involved, I agreed with him. And by the way, we need to put up a statue of Nolan while the man is still alive. What a great man who did great things for the U if A and the state and college basketball.

Eddie Sutton gets a statue 100 times before Nolan. Before Eddie, Arkansas basketball in Barnhill had about 500 fans per game. One year after Eddie came you had to get to the JV game to see the varsity.
It was the end of the game, and Cincinnati was going to foul every possession to try and lengthen the game. You want the ball in the hands of your best ball handler/free throw shooter’s. It doesn’t require much basketball knowledge to know this.
As the announcer continued his hate session, the scoreboard kept going up 2 points per possession for Arkansas and a foul on K-states best player. Went from a 1 possession, then 2 possession, then 3 possession game. Checkmate
I know that passing the ball is the sportsmanlike thing to do, but in Lykes' defense, he's 5'7" getting guarded by guys who are almost a foot taller than him. He's fast and a deadly shooter, which is why he's guarded so heavily and it makes it almost impossible to pass in most situations. So, I think the announcers should cut him some slack for that.
Hmmmm.....I'm not sure about that. Either you can play Division 1 ball or you can't. That also doesn't give you the green light to keep jacking up 3's when you are 0-7. You don't get a handicap in basketball the same way you do in golf. No offense intended
@@alext2963 None taken, although I disagree. It's not really a handicap, it's more like playing to your advantages, which Lykes obviously gives and takes. He doesn't have height so he can't pass the ball as easily as someone like Vanover, but he's incredibly fast and is normally a sharpshooter around the arch. Lykes not passing (see 0:47) proves what I was saying about heavy guarding and no obvious passing opportunities from his perspective. As far as his threes go from that game, his 3-point percentage ended up being 36.8%, so I think his playing was good but the announcers just did not see it that way.
@@samuellannutti He didn't inspire me at the end of the game. All he showed me was a lot of selfishness, and if the coach told him to hold the ball, I question his tactics
Has this commentator EVER touched the hardwood in an organized, competitive setting?? Lykes doesn’t look to be 6’6 but he does seem to be pretty quick on his feet. When they full court pressed ARK, sometimes the best option isn’t a forced attempted jump pass from a short guard over/around/through 3 taller defenders Mr Commentator. And the worst thing he could’ve done is picked up the ball and killed his dribble. He relied on his speed and ball-handling instead of panicking. I saw fouls getting drawn, not turnovers being committed…and a commentator who needs to be re-evaluated.
Coach knows that Kansas doesn't have the quickness to steal the ball from Lykes. He's the smallest (5'7") on the court, the quickest, and shoots 90% from the FT line. This analyst doesn't know basketball.
Yes, he took a bad shot but so did other players on both sides of the ball. That was the only bad shot he took that game. On the press coach wanted him to keep the ball because they had to foul and he is the best FT shooter on the team. This dude is a freaking hater. There is a reason he isn't a coach. It's easy for anyone to sit on the sideline and critic things. But to unload on a player like he did was awful.
That announcer needs to be fired because he is announcing a game that he knows absolutely nothing about. If he doesn't know that you want the ball in your best free throw shooters hands the last 90 seconds of the game, then he needs to be fired because that is common basketball knowledge. Arkansas wanted the ball in his hands at the end of the game. The dude hit 10 free throws to seal the win!?!? He "unloaded" on Lykes because he lacked the common knowledge of the game that he was announcing. Pathetic!
Truth be told didn't Musselman sort of expressed what these announcers were witnessing they were being critical for the right reasons and Chris was proven them right over and over they got away from what they were doing in the first half that gave them the 18 point lead at half time but they let K State get as close as 6 points it was night and day and you can see the frustration when you listen to Musselman speak trying not to throw his players under the bus, the announcers gave Chris credit but he needs to involve rest of the team he is the floor general like Devo they need to play together more not as individuals usually I don't care for announcers being critical but i agree with them on this.
That makes no sense, they were up with less than a minute to go, Lykes has been knocking down free throws. What is there to be mad about from Muss? I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m sure he would like to see a lot of different thing happening out there, but there was not a lot to gain from trying to pass the ball in those situations, in fact it might be more dangerous. Dribble the ball and draw a foul for your best shooter to go to the line, or keep passing and try to open up a shot and risk turning the ball of and not getting any points. Like I said, Muss might be upset about some stuff out there, but not lykes drawing fouls in the last minutes of the game.
We hear shit like this a lot on the west coast. I don't know this kid, but the way he methodically took apart their press and then just sank every single FT he had, one of my favorite players already.
The announcer wasnt lying about the awful shots or that with 3 ppl on him and its safe to say you can find a open man if there is 3 ppl on you.. The rest of his rants seemed deep, like he has been feeling some type of way for a while now....
Bruh to play Division 1 basketball at 5'7 I feel like you have to be RIDICULOUSLY good. Like there's literally thousands of 6'2 and up players to go around coming out of high school and this dude is still out there. That's awesome.
I remember as an athlete going back to listen to announcers who would talk like this about me or my teammates. Unless they played the sport at the same level, more times than not, they have no idea what they're even talking about.
@jacobe you’ve obviously never played organized that’s was low iq possessions trying to beat traps alone he lucky he got bailed out by the refs that’s the only reason he didn’t turn the ball over
@@loganreese6626 no sir that’s the reason for the gameplan obviously he’s the guard he’s gonna bring the ball up they’re clocc managing & icing the game they trap he forces them to foul he keeps the clocc moving & give his team more points on the lead
Those two first shots were not good, but I can't see why anybody would complain about the guy while he is winning the game. The guy did pretty good to get those fouls and not freak out with all those defenders on him.
Although I do agree that lykes actually played very well down the stretch, there were several times if he would’ve made a simple pass that could’ve led to an easy lay up or dunk.
@@ButchCrassidy you understand basketball is a team sport? The smart basketball play is to throw to open teammate and he’s gonna have an easy lay up or dunk. The announcers weren’t hating it’s called constructive criticism. Hating would be if they said “He’s not a college athlete, he’s too short, he makes pour decisions, etc”
