I have read (almost) all of the millions of comments on this video, and I'll say many many people expressed the same sentiment. And one person had never considered using anything other than their thumb and was horrified people would trust "the weakest finger". You are Loved And Supported by many people, here in the Land of Etho Mockery. (I'm not clear how it can be *comfortable*, but I've given up judging after so many people here tried and validated Etho's mouse situation. Except the one track audio, that hurts my soul.)
Just recently i realised i've always pressed shift with my thumb but just never thought about it, because it's just how my brain presses shift without thinking. Back when this topic got brought up with you i understood their side because yeah it could seem inconvenient, but now i have more insight :P
it isn’t that strange, I have a somewhat similar desk setup. The table is just a little higher up and since taller people have longer arms the keyboard is a little further away and all the space thats between you and the keyboard is used by the mouse.
Because it IS based on sight! When you use a mouse the normal way, the horizontal movement of the mouse is perfectly mirrored on the display: you move the mouse to the left, the pointer goes left. And the vertical movement is also very intuitive: move the mouse forward, pointer goes up. The way he uses it, the pointer goes up when he moves the mouse to the left, right when he moves it forward, down when he moves it to the right and left when he moves it back. It's completely twisted! I don't want to know how much time it takes to get used to such craziness and WHY?! 💀
@@LRM12o8i use it based on feel too. just move your hand right/left? you don’t look at the mouse when playing, right? so if you move your hand left, the cursor will go left. doesn’t matter if the mouse itself is moving up or left or whatever, for me ^^
@@LRM12o8 In ‘common’ positioning yes, but to say he’s flipped it would be ignoring that he’s still holding the mouse the same way in his hand. When I move the mouse, I don’t look at where it’s going on the desk, I feel where it is moving relative to my wrist: push is up, pull is down, drag left and right. I tried it how Etho does it last night, and while taking a bit of practice is absolutely possible with the exact same hand motions as before. It’s wild, however weirdly intuitive if you don’t try to think of any one way as standard
@@ThomasSantosCanal1 I actually use a few different positions throughout the day, but my most common one is actually rotated out a few degrees as opposed to in, when I have the room
Part of me thinks he didn’t do it out of any big brainwave but his chair broke in the down position and adapted until he could get a new chair but took so long to get the new chair that it was to weird to go back
@@alyssa09485 I do also believe his mouse has either scrolling or clicking issues. This man needs some new gear! I'm willing to bet half his gear is actually older then some of the people that watch him
Is there a way to donate to etho so he could fund that into new gear lol..like ik hes financially stable but... He got gears older than some of us,probably born with them
It's insane to me that Mumbo and Etho are on the same server. Mumbo has the nicest, highest end setup in existence, complete with an ergonomic chair and triple monitors and everything, meanwhile Etho balances his mic on Kleenex box. And Etho is the better Minecraft player.
Furthermore, if Etho's desk is so high that his arms are nearly parallel (and he is a big dude), like, Bdub's would be resting his chin on such a setup. 😮
We all love to make "Bdubs is small" jokes, but let's not forget that Grian is even shorter. Have you ever seen the image of him standing next to Mumbo (second tallest Hermit after Doc)? It's absolutely hilarious
The mouse problem only exists because of the tissue setup. The mouse situation only got that bad because of the tissue box he refuses to get rid of and then he convinced himself that this is a better setup than everybody else. Outstanding lmao. It's like learning how to ride a unicycle because you refuse to change your bike's bursted tire
You'e doing the math wrong, he's been using the mouse set-up for ten years, but the mic in the tissue box is 4 years old? According to you, the mic is older? How? Make it make sense
i was laughed at work because i have my same mouse setup for 8 years (without the tissue box) and now i learned that one of my favorite youtubers has the same setup as me.
Same man... I have the same setup... Like the same mouse placement cause my table's a bit high, it's a study table, not gaming table... So it's so comfortable having the mouse like that.
I copied that mouse work at 10 or so from my mother. Never knew until now that people consider it weird. It's more relaxed for me than holding it next to the keybord.
@Peevee-xs4xq That is interesting. Here, he says that he can see the space bar. This gives me the impression that he can see the whole keyboard. Maybe his setup changed a little? Wait... maybe his keyboard is under the monitor that could be on a shelf, and he can only see the space bar? Idk lol. It's a reach. It's Etho being Etho.
@Peevee-xs4xq Like you said. A picture of his desk would be nice. And maybe a masked/disguised Etho (as Kakashi-sensei would be awesome), sitting at it to demonstrate how it works, would help. 🤔 But we know we'll never get that. But the confusing mystery is so fun.
Scar thinking he'd be able to see Etho's ender chest contents is classic and a perfect place for the cut. I've made the same mistake more than once. I've even walked to another players house and left them a gift in their ender chest because it was the first chest I found.
Etho is one of a kind! How he makes videos is "unique". He doesn't record a bunch then edit it down to a video. He records 1 clip at a time. Meaning he records a clip, adds it to the video he's working on, then if he likes it records the next clip.
This sounds like an old school Quake thing. Back in the day of LAN tournaments with massive monitors space was much less forgiving and compression of your space was necessary, which not only made up weird mouse placements like that but also pioneered keyboard tilting back in the day when pretty much nothing was smaller than TKL (pretty much only the Model M SSK was the only consumer model at the time smaller than full size).
In my case it's just convenience of slightly less arm movement between holding mouse (below keyboard, sideways) and having both hands on the keyboard versus moving hand all the way off keyboard to the mouse on the side of keyboard
This is might be like the left-handed theory they’ve been talking on stream. Etho might actually able to beat Gem in pvp if he got desk mat and place his mouse in good place, who knows…
The set up is what's preventing him from ever doing it realistically lol if he switched the set up into something less unhinged he could probably get good enough at PvP, but at first he'd be even worse because he'd have to adjust to it
I have no doubt that some other hermits would donate etho some items if they were able to. With etho being around for How many years, there has to have been at least one case of this happening. If not, I REALLY want to see some donations... cause while it's very interesting, I also feel kinda bad about seeing the state of his desk?
@@eclipse9727 Yes! Scar mentioned a couple of times in stream that he wanted to buy Etho keyboard and mic stand if Etho allows him to. But the man is just so peculiar with his setup and already got used to it so he refuse to replace it
fun fact, the now standard of wasd came from a Quake player remapping his keys from the arrow keys to wasd, and other people noticed it, and tried it, and it is now the standard. (also the developers of Quake, Id Software, noticed it and made it the default)
No I'd argue the other way around, what etho does kinda makes sense and I can do it, Mumbo's thumb is actually insane, I still don't quite get it, I've tried and I can barely reach. Admittedly I have tiny hands, but like what is mumbo doing with his pinky then???? Bc when I've tried the thumb on shift my pinky is still sitting on the shift button too
Nah in all honesty I think Mumbos finger thing is much weirder, try play like that 😂 Ethos setup is weird but if you try play like that it's actually not terrible
I think the pivotal info was the desk height. Try it for yourself and you'll see that it is actually more comfortable to do it that way when you have a high desk
Yes this clicked for me too, it's 100% more comfortable if the desk is ridiculously high. Also, with a low chair you don't need a super tall desk to be at close to shoulder height when sitting. It definitely sounds more crazy without this context. Also, no one would bear the dtrain for playing Minecraft for hours if it legitimately was straining so that confirms this too.
If you're tall you need to have a really low chair to make that work though? Feels like it defeats the point if you're not gonna have enough space for your legs and have them sitting at an awkward angle just to make this setup work.
@@pigglebee A high desk only works if you're not really tall, I'm like 1.95m so you won't find a desk anywhere that would be high enough, and afaik Etho himself is quite tall too.
I moved a kitchen chair to a bar level countertop and put my keyboard and mouse in the position Etho does and guys it’s actually so comfortable?? Like the counter right up against my arms kept me from slouching and it was shockingly ergonomic for my wrists and neck?? Etho is a madman but he’s found a way to cheat the game irl and it w o r k s
@@ovencake523 I just started trying it out and I don't think you do. Or at least not much. Your hand still moves the same as you do with mouse on the side of the keyboard. There was like a minute where I was moving my mouse at a diagonal but after that it just works.
It sounds like Etho is hunched (wide armed) over his desk, and mouse like a boozehead at a bar nursing an empty glass. The fixation on an old kleenex box just adds to the homeless vibes of the whole scene. 😂
I'm 6' and have my chair at the lowest height as well - my legs are usually stretched out under my desk when I'm sitting straight or leaning back (probably 90-95% if the time). When I'm leaning forward they are doubled back under the chair - not the most comfortable position, but also not the most uncomfortable part of sitting leaning forward. I alternate between the two mouse positions, mostly based on how much space I need.
i tried it for about 2 seconds and pulled my bicep and my back started hurting... how much strain is this man putting on his wrist from keeping the mouse facing the same way as his keyboard lmao
Etho's way is actually what I often do! It actually IS way more comfortable. I am an architect irl and often get wrist, palm and shoulder cramps after a day at work. I randomly tried a different mouse hand position and I rarely get muscle aches anymore
I was watching the stream of this at work and was occupied for a bit and came in when Tango said "so I'm on your right elbow now?" And I had no idea what I'd walked into. This makes so much more sense but also no sense at all. 😂😂
No wonder this dude always falls asleep while editing long videos, his setup is basically perfect for napping, with his desk so high, he just gotta lean the head forward a bit and you’re there 😂
His desk height would explain the change actually. When my old chair broke I had to bend my wrist to use my mouse because the desk was so high and it REALLY messed up my wrist over time. His mouse posture would fix that but feel worse at a normal desk height since you'd have to hunch to actually use it. Also his mouse movements would be the same to him, right is still right it's just positioned differently. His arm moves the same.
yknow i thought "theres no way they spend the whole 15 minute video on this subject" but nope, it turns out etho's setup genuinely requires 15 minutes worth of explanation. what a legend
My arm rests are lower than my desk, my elbows are on the arm rests, my wrists are at the edge of my desk, and my wrists are also in-line with my lower arms.
This was actually the recommended way to hold the computer mouse by my physical therapist. It's a lot more natural for your hands/arms as they're not twisted unnaturally. It's more natural to hold your hands in front of you toward the middle, like holding your hands together.
@@ChillCubitoClips I had this setup for work with a lift desk, and i would recommend it, but i know it's not for everyone. And funnily enough, how etho describes having his elbows resting on his desk since it's so high up is exactly what the physical therapist recommended as well. Switch your posture throughout the day, keep the mouse in front of your keyboard, and when standing you have your desk high enough that your elbows is resting a little on it. Like it should feel just a little too high. Etho kind of unknowingly optimising his setup for maximum comfort is such an etho thing to do 😆
I actually spend most of my time on my laptop with a trackpad, reclined on the couch, but i keep saying i should use my desk more. (reclining helps with my particular shoulder problems, cause i can't hunch forward) @@eirikco
@@ChillCubitoClips With etho's method, I'd imagine you'd have to hunch forward a little more than a normal desk setup. So that might not be great for your shouldee. Lift desks are great though, keeps you from getting stuck in the same position for too long. ... If you don't forget about the lift function like I totally never do..
As someone who started out gaming on PC with a really small desk with not a lot of desk-space. I will stand with Etho on messed up setups. my keyboard is always at like a 60 degree angle with the w facing away from me and my mouse is slanted in the other direction behind my keyboard filling in that space so I can use it. I stand with Etho
I really do understand the reasoning for the mouse location, but using a good wrist cushion will help a lot with the straining. Those ones which aren't attached to a mouse pad.
Well apparently quite a few people do the same thing as Etho, according to the comments, so probably Mumbo shift, because I'm like the only other person apart form Mumbo who used* to press shift with my thumb and I can confirm it's not the most ideal thing in the world (I still press shift with my thumb whenever I feel too uncomfortable holding it down with my weak flimsy little pinky finger, but nowadays I have adapted a little bit to using my pinky finger, so now I'm both instead of exclusively a shift thumber)
Woah, that mouse and keyboard placement is actually good. You can rest both elbows on your desk, I feel less strain. The armrests on my chair doesnt reach as far as I might want, so this setup is actually goated.
I am really familiar with having a weird setup that no one understands, but with Etho's desk at his shoulder height I feel like he is probably just a literal goblin.
tried it and feels very naturally actually, your hand still knows whats up and down relative to itself so you dont really have to think about it and it looses up alot of my shoulder tension
The 90° mouse actually makes sense to me, I'm more concerned about the fact that his desk is so high?!?! How does having your elbows nearly parallel with your shoulders not hurt his upper back?
elbow on the desk with the mouse sideways is actually pretty comfortable to play with. in the old days a lot of quake players used to do similar stuffs at lan or internet cafes when there really wasnt enough space on the desk to game at a high level. another strat ill reccomend that some ppl may or may not enjoy is to place your keyboard on your lap/knee when you play games. ive heard some ppl find that pose comfortable as well
Yknow what, etho really is a top tier pvper- because you have to be a beast to play with such an insane handicap, i thought mumbo was bad etho truly is the biggest enigma of minecrafts history
Ok I was absolutely blown away when he was describing this, and then I tried the sideways mouse thing, and I was blown away more because it's SUPER comfortable. I'm having a crisis.
