00:00 Introduction
Within the realm of dress shirts, Eton is widely regarded as the bridge between high-end shirtmakers like 100 Hands and mass-produced retail chains like Banana Republic, J Crew or Charles Tyrwhitt.
Their trendier cuts and style detailing on most their shirts, like spread collars, bold and classic fabrics, non-iron treatments, and use of pattern under the collar and cuffs, have made them especially popular with young office professionals in England and around the world.
02:25 History
A Closer Look At Eton Shirts
Eton has claimed in the past that they make the best dress shirts in the world, so of course, you want to know, is that actually true? So what do you, as a consumer, actually get in terms of materials, construction, fit, and details when you buy an Eton shirt?
05:06 1. Fabric
08:12 2. Construction
10:32 3. Types of Shirts
10:50 4. Manufacturing
11:40 5. Fit
14:26 Are You Getting a Good Value For Your Money?
Overall, Eton puts out a high-quality product. You get high-quality fabrics, lots of collar options, fabric, style, and fit options. The workmanship is neat, the buttons don’t come off, the shirts last and the organic wrinkle-resistant treatment is great, particularly if you travel a lot
On the flip side, The buttons feel a bit cheap, the collar stays are not removable, and there is no handwork or hand stitching on the shirt, which is something you will find from companies like 100 Hands, Borrelli, Attolini or Finamore.
16:10 What Does All This Mean for You as a Customer?
17:30 Is It Really Worth It?
There are many other dress shirts and each and everyone has different needs and desires. If you want the ultimate amount of workmanship, they’re definitely not the best shirt. If you want the perfect fit, they’re definitely not the best shirt. If you want the best non-iron or wrinkle-resistant shirt, I think they are probably the best shirt you can buy in the market.
Eton does have sales where you can get shirts at 40 to 50% off, and obviously, they become a much better value then. Still, apart from my non-iron shirts even at 50% off, I would rather go with an online made-to-measure company so you can get exactly what I want with a better fit at a lower price. If you’re on a really tight budget, you can find Eton shirts for relatively low prices in good shape on eBay still.

I love these videos. They’re always so ‘inconclusive’. There’s rarely a yes or no. It’s a very balanced analysis of every element and then the decision is up to us whether we think it’s worth it for us or not. Quite a range position to take on RU-vid. Very gentlemanly.

I love all of my Eton shirts although they are pricey. My Eton shirts are still nice after washing which most shirt degrade immediately after washing. The long cotton thread and cotton used in Eton shirts can attribute to their longevity. Made to measure shirts at lower price doesn’t necessary mean they are better quality. The feel, quality, look, and longevity of the Eton shirt check all the blocks for a nice quality shirt. The entry price could deter your purchase but once purchased I believe most will be happy and will be return customers.

I've heard a lot of good things about their non-iron shirts. I think that, when it gets to great quality dress shirts, you really want to invest as much as you can. Shirts are always against your skin and comfort and style shouldn't be compromised.

@TheRefinedGentleman

Excellent review, I certainly agree with everything you said here. The one thing Eton does well is make a low maintenance shirt, which is built to last using good fabrics. Some of my Jermyn Street level shirts come out of the wash quite wrinkled, and need a lot of touch up with an iron so they're crisp again. I don't really need to touch up the Eton shirts too much, if any. They run about $250-$300 here in Canada at Harry Rosen and my local upscale menswear store, although they go about double that online at Saks for some reason. I see them here with a good mix of mid-spread and cutaway collars with a good selection of colours and patterns, including many varieties of white shirts with different button and cuff trimming options. Despite this, I'm a little baffled by some of their plain-fronted fly front shirts they market at evening shirts, but they do offer a collar attached Marcella evening shirt for white tie, which I suppose isn't quite correct. Regarding the collar stiffeners, if you have experience sewing, it's sometimes possible to alter a shirt so it can take removable ones. Their sizing works really well with my body, and the long arms are a blessing for a lanky guy like me. If you want a good non-iron shirt, Eton is certainly worth it, but I'm convinced you can get much better value elsewhere. There's several places in my city you can get MTM or bespoke shirts with comparable fabrics for around $190-$225 CAD, and request the shirts be made to take removable collar stiffeners. I like Eton, but you can find better shirts for cheaper imo.

Hey Sven, I've just bought my first suit (went with a light grey), and was wondering if you had any advice on how to balance patterned shirts and ties? Is it a good idea to have both a patterned tie and shirt? or should only one of them be patterned? or does it just depend on the style/prominence of the patterns? Do you (or anyone) have any advice for a mens formal wear newbie?
@blakemcnamara9105
@blakemcnamara9105 3 года назад
In my opinion, patterned shirts should not be worn with ties and actually should be kept as a shirt to wear with a sport coat or just by itself. With a light grey suit, your best bet is with white shirts or very soft pastel colours.

i have around a dozen Eton shirts. Bought them on Ebay from Luthuania, Poand, Rumania even Russta. Love them. Never paid more than 28 euros for them. They're all flawless. They also have 8 buttons that close, which means you can tuck the shirt in really well (Most shirts have 799) which is a real plus with these lower waisted modern trousers. The European sellers state all the measurements on their webs, but the UK shops on EBAY are too lazy. I'm sick of having to ask them the"pit to pit" size etc, Apart from that, UK POSTAGE to Spain is horrendously expensive.

I've had a few Eton Slim that have lasted 9 years now and still look great. Very little wear showing. I can't believe how well they have held up actually as i wear them a lot. If i get a contemporary fit i need to dart it or take it in. I usually by Hugo Boss this as they're slightly cheaper and fit a tall skinny guy just as well as the Eton slim, however the Eton is a better made shirt than any Boss one. I generally prefer the patterns Boss makes though. Years ago I wanted to get into Thomas Pink so so bad but they just never fit right no matter the cut. Im glad I found Eton instead. I do wonder why they never allow a removable collar stay - that one is beyond me. Makes NO sense at all.
@Theo-ul8qm
@Theo-ul8qm 2 года назад
I’m not sure, but I think their thinking is that it’s more convenient. You just take the shirt off and throw it in the wash instead of having to remember to remove the collar stays beforehand. Having said that, I have a few Eton shirts myself and the only one that does take removable collar stays is a denim shirt. Now that I really don’t understand.

I have some Etons, and I like the non-iron property of them. However, I have always preferred shirts from Stenströms (which is probably their biggest competitor in Sweden).

I love Eton shirts. My only gripe is that they do not have removable collar stays. I prefer removable stays. Still my favorite shirts overall.

Online mtm is terrible, they usually do not even care about the measurements you give them, I will never do it again

For tall sizes bought at Rochester big an tall (now DXL), collar circumference was smaller respect to a same size made by other brands such as Thurnbull & Asser, available in the same shop. Being a Swedish company, that are famous by ergonomics, it was a deception for me.

FYI the average gross salary in Romania for a factory tailor is about 800-900 euro, so not that cheap to do garments there. Also Eton is way better quality than Brooks Brothers made in US where incomes should be higher, so what is that telling you about salary vs skill???? Just FYI of course.

Spier & Mackay shirts seem to be comparable to these shirts for a fraction of the price

Turnbull & asser does bespoke in NYC at a starting price of $450. And $700 for silk & West Indian sea island cotton. They take your measurements in store then they send it to the UK to be made. 4 shirts minimum to start.

I think sober color selection and tips by Gentlemen Gazette can make any shirt, look great. Just be a little fit. No offense to anyone.
