Clayton: Hello, everybody Clayton here at etrailer.com. Here at etrailer.com, we install, test and review a lot of different products to help you as a customer make a more educated decision before your purchase. Today we're going to be taking a look at and I'll show you how to install the Demco 4-Diode Universal Towed Vehicle Wiring Kit on our 2019 Ford Ranger. Our diodes are going to give us all those necessary functions on our towed vehicle from our RV to keep everybody safe behind us when we're flat towing our vehicle. Our diodes are going to be necessary to get all of our lighting functions back to our towed vehicle from our RV to keep everybody safe behind us and to let them know what we're doing. We're going to get our stop and turn signal and our running light signal. Our diodes are going to be one of the key components in our flat towing setup.
We're going to have our supplemental braking system, our tow bar, our base plate, our safety cables, our diode wiring of course, our charge line kit, our 12 volt outlet kit and our brake light relay. One nice feature of the diodes is it is going to prevent back feed, so it's going to protect our factory tail lights and we don't have to worry about it frying our electrical stuff whenever we're not flat towing. And like I said, you are going to need a brake light relay for this setup, and that's just because you don't want the stop signal overriding the turn signals. That way if you're sitting at a stoplight, people are always going to be able to tell what you're doing. There are going to be a couple of ways to get our necessary lighting functions back to our towed vehicle.Used to be a lot of people would use magnetic lights, and it just doesn't look as good. There's magnets and wires and stuff just hanging off the back of our truck and especially when we have a tonneau cover, it's going to be hard to find somewhere to stick those lights.
Personally, I always like to go with the diodes. It keeps everything contained in our tail light housing and just looks a whole lot cleaner. And probably the best feature of this kit is it is going to include everything we need to get it installed. It's going to include the 6-pole plug on the front and our umbilical cord. We don't have to try to hunt down extra parts and possibly miss something in the process. And in terms of installation, getting it installed really is not that bad.
The hardest part is going to be running our wires from the front to the back. With that being said, I'll show you how to get it installed now.To start our installation, we're going to want to run our wiring from the front of our Ranger to the back. I'll go ahead and do it and I'll show you the route we took. I tied off a lot of our extra wire with our plug here up on the front, that way if we ever have to come back and make changes, we'll have room to do that with some extra wiring. And I ran our wire up around our base plate and up along the side of our frame rail here.
Kept it real nice and tight to our frame rail through here. You want to keep it out of the way of anything hot or moving. And then it comes out right back here. We just zip tied it to our frame and followed our factory lines, and over our crossmember, and all the way back. Zip tied these lines here, then it goes up over our fuel tank. It's going to follow the fuel tank all the way back to right here. Then I pulled it out above our fuel tank and zip tied it up there to our factory lines and above our strut. Then I tucked it up and over our frame rail and pulled it out here, and then zip tied it to our factory wiring. We're now ready to remove our rear tail light assembly. There's going to be two 8mm bolts that we need to take off. And with those removed, we can pull out on our tail lamp assembly. Just have to wiggle it around to get those clips to release, just like that. Then we want to come down to our plug, there's going to be a red tab, you're going to push out on the tab, just like that, and we'll push down on this gray tab, then pull off our plug, just like that. Going to have a plastic connector here. Just want to pull that out of our tail lamp and we can set this off to the side. Now we just want to come back with a utility knife and cut off our sheathing from our wires. We now want to grab the end of our four-pole wiring. We're going to slide this up through the bottom of our Ranger. And we can kind of push it up and then reach here, and then pull it the rest of the way. We now want to grab the end of our plug and we're just going to cut our plug off of our wires. With our plug removed, we are

If you cut into the factory harness you are making a corrosion point. There is NO METHOD known to man to make a DIY watertight splice. ESPECIALLY behind the tail lights as that is BEHIND the rear tire & that tire will be throwing lots and lots and lots of rainwater up off the roadway & drenching your open connection. There are toad wiring harness kits avail with connectors molded into the harness in a plug & play installation where NO WIRE CUTTING is required. Thats what you want if you want long term lighting circuits which will last for years & years. Of course, if this is a one time tow, then, cut away. !
