Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring Harness, but before we get into that, let's take a minute, check it out and make sure it's gonna work for ya. If you plan on pulling a trailer around with your Jeep, you're gonna need a way to illuminate all the lights on your trailer, that way you're not only safe, but legal as well and that's where a trailer wiring kit like this one is going to come into play. Not to mention too, these Jeeps are getting super popular, people doing a lot of stuff with them, using a lot of accessories, something like those accessories will light up and chances are really good a connector like this will power those up as well. With that said, this is going to provide us with our brake lights, our taillights, as well as our turn signals, so we'll have all of our bases covered there. And when it comes to actually mounting this up, we can do it a couple of different ways.
The way we have ours set up today, you can just loop it around your safety chain opening, which I think works fine. Or you can also get brackets. There's a ton of them available here at etrailer to where you can kind of actually mount this up permanently if you want to. The reason I chose to run it like this today is actually because here in the near future, we're gonna be setting up a trailer brake controller on this Jeep, and you know, if I put it on a bracket to fix it, put it in a fixed position, we'd end up just having to undo it all 'cause this will get converted to a seven-way, which kind of brings me to my next point. If that's something you plan on doing, putting a brake controller on your Jeep, this'll be a great starting point to accomplish that.
So when it comes down to it, a nice wiring kit. I'm a big fan of Tekonsha. I've used the wiring kits in my own personal vehicles and I never really ran into any issues, so can't go wrong with it. And I like the fact too with this kit they give you some really nice connectors and a bunch of zip ties and a lot of ins and outs to make the installation process a little bit easier on you. As far as getting that done, it's really not bad.
Your wires plug in to the back of your taillights. The most time-consuming part is just having to run a power wire from the back up to the front, that way you can hook it up to the battery, but the Jeeps are not bad to work on. You got quite a bit of room, so take your time, you should be in pretty good shape. With that in mind, why don't we go ahead and get started on it now. To begin our installation, we're gonna be here at the back of our Jeep and we're gonna need to remove our taillights so just inside, kind of right behind the taillights, there is a small panel that we can remove to get to our fastener.
Here's that little panel we need to remove and so you can take a trim tool or a even a little flathead screwdriver, just pry on it to pop it up. And inside of there, we're gonna have a 10 millimeter head fastener. So with these, be real careful 'cause they are plastic. Try not to use a power tool on 'em. (ratchet clicking) That way we just don't tear it up. (ratchet clicking) So when you're doing this, you can kind of feel it start to get loose. Make sure to just kind of put your other hand on the taillight 'cause this is the only thing holding it in. (fastener clunking) Go ahead and just pull the taillight out. Then we can disconnect it. So there's a small red retaining clip, we push back on it, and then push down on the center of the tab to release it. We'll set our light off the side and do the same thing to get the other one removed. Over on the driver's side, what you can do is take your green tee connector wire and then your four-way flat. I'm gonna take both these ends and just put 'em through the taillight pocket. There's pretty wide opening down here. Drop these down to the bottom side. So we get to about here. I'll just kind of stuff this stuff inside of here. And our yellow tee connector, the yellow and brown one, this end is going to get plugged into our factory connector there. Just kind of a quick pointer here, where we're eventually gonna mount this up inside of the taillight pocket, our wiring is gonna have to kind of go up and over a piece of metal, so just to help stop it from rubbing on it or anything like that, I got about a foot-long piece of wire loom that you can pick up here. I'm just gonna put that right over this portion of the wire, like I said, that way it just has a little extra pr
