Man thanks so much for this video... There is no way I could have done the install with just the directions alone.. This video saved me hundreds of dollars

Thanks, your video was a great help. I just installed the Mopar wiring harness in my '18 JLU Sahara. The harness kit I just purchased from the dealer in Northern Kentucky may have had a couple of changes (improvements) that help the installation. It also had a revised set of instructions (K6862985 - steps added). The first was a 10mm nut to stack the fuse holder lead on top of the first lug on the fuse panel. This avoids having to remove the rectangular lug and attached factory nut. Place the fuse holder lug on top the stud, install a second 10mm nut and torque to the 9 Nm indicated in the instructions (old step 17, new step 19). The second was a short factory installed red pigtail wire and connector has been added to the harness from the connector for the trailer light control module. This allows the red wire from the fuse to plug into an intermediate connector and saves having to pull the retainer clip on the big connector (old steps 28-30) to insert the red wire (new step 33 & 34). This is much easier than having to disassemble the large connector module. Another third change is only in the procedure. It calls for removing the harness covers completely (removing the 10mm nuts) on the front and rear door jams to run the power wire from the front to the back as well as the blue wire (brake lead) from the rear to the front (new steps 23-26) and then reinstalling the covers. The old procedure called for tying these to the outside of these black inner covers for the harness. I see the short pigtail wire and connector as a major improvement, if purchasing this kit, you might check to see if it has this update....

Thank you for the video I’ll be tackling this harness in the near future can you make a video for the blue wire that goes to the glove box since I will be using a brake controller in my JL
@djonesey5

At 5:36 you must also detached the retaining bracket on the driver's side of the glove box by pulling up and away from the glove box, in order to be able to separate it from the area it normally resides at.

First thanks for the video it was WAY better than the sad attempt at directions that came with the harness. I got my harness installed with no problems last weekend BUT, all I have is 12v on the red wire at the 7 way connector. No lights no ground absolutely nothing else at the hitch point. I do have 12v going into the connector that plugs into the module. 2018 JLUR with LED package. Any ideas. I’m guessing bad module or connectors.

From what I've read and seen in videos the dealership will gladly install this and the hitch, for you parts and labor for around $ 1,000.00. I've also seen that you can apparently get it added to the 3 year 36,000 warranty. Might be worth it if the jeep didn't come from factory with it installed. That way if they mess something up or break a trim piece they fix it.
@caldo101
@caldo101 4 года назад
The only thing forgotten on the video is mentioning that the jeep has to go to the dealer so they can add the tow package sell's code to the jeep so everything ca n work properly and it gets cover by the jeeps warranty, just like anything, if it did not come factory installed it has to by added to the vin# to work properly.

Hi! Thanks for the video! I just got my harness but I think the new harness has couple of minor differences. So the next to the cable that goes into the fusebox, I have a blue cable that (brake control) - I don’t know what to do with it. Instructions don’t really explain well what to do with this blue cable. Does this mean I have a trailer brake system or that is something else that I would have to add to the system. I’m little confused can you please explain the trailer brake situation?

Any advice on getting a brake controller to work? The video covers everything but that and I installed the brake controller and it is not working. Needs 12v and only getting 5v.

Where does the blue wire that goes under the glove box connect to?
@mergedown
@mergedown 5 лет назад
I self installed my tow harness and then installed a brake controller. I’m able to get the brake controller to engage the trailer brakes with the manual switch on the controller itself, but I can’t get them to engage when pressing the brakes. I’m not sure I’ve tapped in to the correct brake pedal wire, any idea which wire is correct?

If the connection to the fuse box were made directly to the positive battery terminal instead, could that cause the fuse to blow?
@djonesey5

I just pushed hanger wire from within the rig, through the grommet shown, and can see it lying on my back, behind the passenger's side front tire, pulling back the passenger's side front fender liner, but by no means removing it or any of the rivets etc. that keep it in place. Dropping down a wire from the battery to the ground below will be very straight forward, whre I can attach this wire to the hanger and can pull the hanger back. No glovebox removal, no passenger's side front fender liner removal, no nothing was required.
@jbrija3000
@jbrija3000 5 лет назад
Agreed on the fender liners. I simply pulled mine back and was able to run the wiring. As for the grommets I needed to put a slit in them with a razor knife, especially the firewall, the red wire wouldn't pull through. If you have trouble pulling the driver's side wiring white caps to install the yellow wires, try putting a screw into one of the holes he uses the pliers on. Mine would come up but not out till I put a coarse screw into one of the holes and pried upwards with the pliers.

Step 33 of the Mopar Instructions shows a Main Inline Connector (Q) that is not covered in the video so I didn't use it. I have a 2018 JL Rubicon. Is this correct?

After watching this video, I almost took it into a dealer to have them install, but they wanted $400 and to keep the Jeep for 1/2 day. I borrowed a rivet gun and decided to do it myself. I thought I'd do it in two nights: one night to prep and take everything off, and the second night to install and put everything back together. I took out all panels per the video, and then, I realized my wires looked nothing like what was shown in the video. Everything was already bundled together. I really couldn't figure out any other way to do it the way it came, so I ran it underneath (similar to a different video). There's no way I could have snaked that through the firewall with the fuse already installed/attached. So, the reason I'm posting, check the kit you order before you start the project. If you get the same kit I did, you're probably only pulling the exterior panels and running it underneath (which I really didn't want to do, it seems to make more sense to keep wires out from underneath the Jeep). It is what it is though. That said, easier than I thought to install. I watched the videos several times before starting, and overall it went pretty smoothly. I'm definitely a beginner at all of this, and it seemed to go pretty quickly. Also note, I did a little research, and it looks like the brake controller for Jeep/Mopar is only for automatics (not sure why they're not sold/recommended for MTs).

Does anyone know do you have to add the fuses to the fuse block after the installation?

I watched the video carefully as I performed the installation on my new JL. I never saw where that blue wire went that was run to the back of the glove box. I think the video mentioned that the blue wire was for the electric brakes. Where may I find instructions to explain where to put that wire?

Arh the old days, when u could just splice into the existing harness. Why is it critical for the zip ties to be 100mm apart exactly or the install will got to $#!+ ?

A great video, but just keep in mind that the ground isolations at 2:15 were not reversed at 19:34. Off camera this might have been done. All that was shown at 19:34 was connection of the whole negative/ground "shooting match" back to the main battery's negative terminal. This is more than just pedantic. If all the isolations at 2:15 aren't done your rig is still going to have power running through it from the hidden ESS/aux battery that resides below the PDC (power distribution center) whose top is taken off in the video to attach the harness' positive cable to T1 of the high end fuses on the right of the PDC as shown. And if don't reverse the steps at 2:15 before attaching the main battery's negative post's clamp, your rig will have zero power.
@moudzy1446
@moudzy1446 5 лет назад
Good catch. So what are the correct steps? it appears that you only need to remove the 10mm socket closer to you which is the reverse of 19:34. Is that correct?

What happens when the red wire won't plug into the controller in the left rear tail light?
@grantevans6308
@grantevans6308 6 лет назад
There are 2 red wires, one goes in the passenger tail light one goes in the 7-pin outlet next to the hitch. I was confused at first too then I realized that the first red wire was taped to the other wire in the passenger tail light. That one fit perfectly.

I would say that this looks like a major pain to install but to be honest it's no harder than installing it on any old pickup.. they just want you to run the wires in the cab rather than along a frame rail. in some respects its actually easier than modifying an older vehicle to use a 7 pin (I run a 1967 C20)
