Review, Teardown, and Repair of a Eureka Mignon Oro Single Dose #CoffeeGrinder. Warning: I ran into 3 snags that could influence your buying decision.
First, I consider its grind performance, ease of use, and coffee flavor -- with both espresso and pour-over -- comparing it head to head with the #Specialita and the #NicheZero. Then I perform a teardown and evaluate the component quality and mechanical design. There were a few unpleasant surprises, but I was able to repair each of them.

Dear Thomas, first of all, thank you for the video. We really appreciate your feedback and hints since these may allow us to fine tune our products. With this comment, we are happy to provide you and the community with our point of view on each relevant point mentioned in your review. Before going into details, we would like clarify that Mignon Single Dose has been designed to satisfy a specific type of use and need, that is Single Dosing. Considering this purpose, we believe that the most relevant aspect to be considered is the retention. In this regard, per your direct experience and review, we are pleased to underline that the results in terms of retention are extremely positive and (as you mention in the video) superior than other single dose grinders in the market. In particular, your result (around 0.2 grams) is very much in line with our test reporting an exchange retention below 0.3 grams. In addition, we would like to point out that low retention comes together with further relevant advantages, as follows: 1) Absence of grind static and anti-static dosing cup; 2) Very good taste and extraction in espresso (and also in filter coffee), due to the high grind consistency of 65mm flat burrs; 3) Eureka engine (AC motor) which provides higher performances and durability compared to other type of motor (i.e. DC motor). Here below our feedback point by point: • Concerning the Mignon Single Dose Blow Up Cleaning (bellow), being made of rubber and thus not rigid, it may be a bit hard to be placed on the hopper. Nevetheless, once it is perfectly placed, this is stable enough to be used even with energic blows (according to our field tests). BTW, thanks to your review, in order to simplify the assembly process, we are going to create a short video sowing all the steps and cares of this process. • Referring to the wooden lid, we would like to point out that the second production batch has been improved to create a better matching between the wooden lid and the hopper. Nevertheless, please take into consideration that, being made of refined wood, the lid is more fragile than steel or aluminum element. Just to make a comparison: when you buy something valuable such as a cristal goblet you are aware that this needs to be handled differently compared to a plastic glass (that is just an example 😊). Moreover, due to the “tricky” fit wit the hopper, we recommend to use it mainly with the blow up (rubber bellow). • About the hopper metallic tab, taking care of you feedback, we decided to add an additional cycle of polishing to improve both the aestethic and the usability. Taking into account the ease of opening/closing, please consider that our engineers specifically searched for this bit of resistance to make the tab completely fitting to the opening and thus reduce the vibrations/noise. • Concerning the noise, please allow us to say that the measuring method you have been using in the review is not really reliable. Moreover, it looks a bit unfair to compare the noise made by grinders with different motors specifications and performances. Nevertheless, like we did in the past for several of our grinders (such as Mignon Specialità, Mignon Silenzio, Atom Specialty…), we are going to evaluate the possibility to make a test with an external laboratory to calculate the noise level with the most appropriate tools and procedures. • Regarding the burrs regulation “issue”, it is important to mention that the regulation system of Mignon Single Dose is exactly the same of other Mignon, such as Mignon Specialità. In all our grinders, the spring is set to a certain preload level to provide the most appropriate feeling and usability while the user changes the grind size and it is not really clear to us which was the reason to modify the stroke of the spring. In this regard, we warmly suggest to not tamper with it as this may lead to the loss of the warranty. Generally, in case of supposed technical issue, we suggest to contact your vendor or us (info@eureka.co.it) to receive the proper suppport. • The single dose bean hopper is fitting to all the other Mignon models. Unfortunately, it turned out that the first produced units are a bit too loose compared to the required standard. We want to reassure you that the standard hopper will be perfectly stable. A small advice to increase the stability of the hopper is also tighting the safety screw in the back. To conclude, as mentioned above, Mignon Single Dose should be evaluated as a niche grinder, for a specific need. On one hand, it is not fair to compare it with “regular use” grinder like Mignon Specailità which has a completely different use (despite Mignon Specialità features a very low retention being a regular grinder). On the other hand, as you correctly mentioned, we can affirm that Mignon single Dose refers mainly to quite skilled single dose users, who look for professional performances and the possible lowest retention combine with unique desing and materials. For any clarification or question, please do not hesitate to get back to us. We take the chance to wish you all a fantastic 2022, full of peace and joy. Eureka Team

Wonderful of you to react to an independent review! I'd like to add some thoughts here, since i had some of the same experiences as described in the video. The grinder does give me excellent tasting coffee, but small annoying things are clouding the experience. First, you did not mention the motor vibration being a problem in the long run, can you react to that too? Second, the blow up system is not a tight fit on my machine, i had the same experience as him in the video. (Although i can easily put it back, its loose.) Third and most important, my machine always has 0.5-1.0 grams retained, thanks to the de-clumper fork clogging the exit chute. This also makes the blow up useless, because it cant generate enough pressure, to blow through the clogged grounds. The air escapes through the closed metal hopper tab. Any pointers to prevent this? Cleaning doesnt help, first grinding clogs it again. Also on my machine the hopper screw just falls out of its place, since its not the right size. That's pretty negligent product quality from a respectable company. Like the zip-ties mentioned in the video, but i guess i can live with those. Would be great to hear your insights!

Hello, it is very appreciated to see that the manufacturer responds to a serious test. Good for you. And if you have a few minutes, maybe you could also give your opinion about the questions I have (gain to go from 50 to 65mm, is there really a difference in cup for espressi) and hesitation in single dose and XL. Thank you. here is how I phrased it: "Good day and very nice review, thank you very much. I have two configurations. The one at home: Niche Zero and Rocket Appartamento. The work side: Eureka Mignon MCI (with 50mm burrs) and the equivalent of a Lelit PL41 T Plus PID. I intend to change the grinder at work, so I'll change the Mignon MCI for a Mignon but I'm hesitating between the XL and the Single dosing. The XL would allow me to use the hopper and for the Single Dosing one finds on the net hoppers with bellows made with 3D printer whose users seem satisfied. In short, I hesitate between the two. But before an advice on this choice, another question: will the espressi be really better with 65mm burrs compared to 50mm burrs? Thank you for your help. Happy new year 2022 !" Thank you

- I agree the bellows is fine, and doesn't seem to pop off once put in place (from my brief experience with it so far). - The Hopper shut off gate is annoying to use though. The bellows doesn't work unless it's closed since air will escape through there. - The bellows / blow up system doesn't seem to work anyway though, because the design of the clump crusher or something else seems to cause too much of an obstruction, even with a small amount of coffee put through, it clogs up and the bellows doesn't have enough force to break through. Air from the bellows escapes around the neck / collar area where it installs into the grinder. - The Specialita seemed more quiet and overall higher quality in ways. This grinder does grind a lot faster, and has lower retention than the Specialita, but it seems silly to release it comes with a bellows if the bellows doesn't work with it.
@jimmychb13
@jimmychb13 2 года назад
@Netheril, the bolt "securing" the hopper also closes a hole in the rubber sealing the hopper. A lot of air is coming out there when using the bellow. Maybe that helps reducing the retention?

Thanks for your review. I took delivery of mine 6 days ago, from Clive, after having had one on back-order from WWL for 2 months... Your experience is a bit different than mine, leading me to believe there is some variance in their build process. My bellows provides a tight fit to the acrylic hopper! It takes more than a little push to remove it. The hopper "open/close tab" is polished on both sides and seems well-finished. Note: this is the US model and highly-polished chrome.

So far, I am very happy with my Oro Single dose (2023). Frankly, I have no complain about it and I am not paid by Eureka. It’s better than my Vario and for my use, I prefer it to the Eureka atom (too much retention and much longer grinding time). Retention is about 0.1/0.2 grams and the grinding is homogeneous and exceptional, delivering exceptional espressi with my Sage Dual Boiler.

Just got mine a week ago and would like to add in my unit as a reference. 1) My unit actually did come with 4-5 rotations from the touch point to the knob "getting loose". I'm not sure if that's enough for filter, but certainly more range than the one in the video. Ill prob give it a shot and see If I have to mod it for filter after my "espresso phase" tones down. 2) My hopper gate did come with some sharp burrs as well. I just filed the edge for a few seconds, fixed it pretty quickly, but definitely should be addressed from the factory.

Your brilliantly detailed and insightful take on this is bound to blow any future reviews by others out of the water, and suffices to keep me from pre-ordering the Oro and saving up, instead, for the Niche as my espresso grinder to be. For the time being, though, I guess I‘ll have to just get a decent hand grinder, since the Oro was already a bit higher than my maximum budget for now. Any suggestions for espresso-only hand grinders? I briefly had the 1Zpresso J-Max and returned it immediately because the zero setting was hopelessly non-zero and I hate complexity and having to mod things right from the start. Just received a Timemore Slim Plus (with the E&B burr set, or whatever it‘s called) in the hopes that it‘ll work well enough for a medium roast in combination with the Picopresso.

I have a qiuck question, you compared SD to Specialita. How do you see the actual Single Dosing performance for both Specialita and Single Dose grinders? @wiredgourmet

Well, not recommend, but I would say that ceramic are easier to dial in for espresso. You can expect round flavors, like from conical steel burrs. Steel flat burrs can be a bit fussy for dialing in, but some prefer the brighter flavors. So, really depends what you enjoy. And the differences are subtle.

Have you considered a video comparing pressurized vs. unpressurized portafilters? This is one of those things that is hard for me to gauge if there is actually a huge difference between the two or if that is one of those just sort of "coffee truisms" that is just held like the filter rinsing nonsense. I've really been appreciating your content by the way! Thank you for offering a unique and insightful voice amidst all the noise.

@TomJones-tx7pb
@TomJones-tx7pb 2 года назад
I have a mildly pressurized portafilter as well as an unpressurized. I grind a little finer for the unpressurized to get the same flow rate, and the coffee output then has a similar taste but is lacking acid tastes that I really dislike in coffee from my days of attempting to drink office drip coffee. To put it another way, if you get an unpressurized portafilter working great, when you switch to a pressurized you will have to grind a bit coarser to get, at best, a similar, but slightly inferior result. Why would you want to do that? I should add that I am using a DeLonghi that can generate pressures upto about 15 bar if the flow rate is too low (which it measures). If the flow rate is good enough at 9 bar, then that is the pressure it generates. If it cannot get much flow rate at 15 bar it gives up and stops. I would imagine that a traditional machine with an E61 head and a pump that only generates 9-10 bar with a pressure release would not perform well (extraction rate too slow) with a pressurized portafilter, but I have not tried it.

It's actually overbuilt, lol. It will not wear out, except in commercial use. The Zero is miles better in fit and finish, mechanical design, and ease of use. You always have to take the decibel level readings with the grain of salt. To really compare You basically have to use the same measurement device and do using the same method from the exact same distance.
@cheyannei5983
@cheyannei5983 2 года назад
3 things: decibel meters have to be calibrated. A phone app, understandably, is not. Two, while decibels are an absolute measure of sound pressure level, it's not a measure of *sound* level--that is to say perceived loudness. That's dba, which is attenuated for how human beings perceive sound. Third, we don't know if the measured unit even matches! One of the reasons a proper decibel meter is costly is because the microphone needs a *flat* frequency response. That is to say, the voltage coming off of the microphone should be the same regardless of what frequency that sound is. Smartphone microphones are not designed to this standard; in fact, they are designed to pick up the human voice clearly, rather than environmental noise.

This grinder has potential. Personally I love the look over any other grinder, and with some changes this grinder could be great. 1) They need to make the hopper not have that notch on the left so air doesnt escape the hopper when using the bellows. It makes the bellows almost useless. Also the set screw on the back which is supposed to hold the hopper in, allows air to escape and blasts the screw out. My screw doesnt even fasten to hold the hopper in, it just floats around. That portion should all be air tight in order to achieve maximum pressure when using bellows. 2) Make the declumper thinner, or different design to prevent clogging after each use. 2) Changethe way the front cover is attached or add a foam gasket seal with rubber washers housing the screw. The current design allows for motor vibration to travel through the housing via the philips screw. Better motor dampening, using rubber where screws meet the motor, or body would ensure a quieter operation. Just my 2 cents, afterall this is their first single dose machine, I expect their second one to be far superior and give the niche a better run for the money on the quality side of things.

Good day and very nice review, thank you very much. Happy new year 2022 !

Burr blade pattern and proportions matter FAR more than a 10 mm change in size. The Specialita and the Oro series have the same pattern, so results will be almost identical. I would go for the Spet, it's only a bit slower than the XL and a lot cheaper.

@wiredgourmet 2 года назад
Good question. I did some quick measurements and it appears that if you were to replace the motor mount and carrier assy, and top carrier, it could work. At least at a glance, I don't see anything that would mess it up. Since I have both grinders, I think I will try it when I'm bored enough. The burr proportions and blade patterns are identical, so the extra 10mm will only increase grinding speed a bit. The grit sliding down the chute is virtually indistinguishable. So I think the value of the change will be way less than the cost of the parts. But it could be an entertaining video :)

I suspect the Niche and Specialita pose perhaps comparable issues relative to preference and subject to opinion? As far as the Niche vs EMSD - predilection? 😅Some of us just love those (bigger) flat burs that inch us closer to commercial, but not too much as to start running our own home cafe! Superb work on the meticulous review!

@@justin5020 Tried the grinder now, had some issues with the bellows not doing its job because it's not powerful enough to clear a little coffee from the chute, but retention is low enough (0.4-0.8g) you might not NEED to use the bellows (I fear the backed up grounds might grow and cause problems though). However, grind quality wise, it seems similar to how I remember the Specialita when I had it, lots of fines which contribute to body, not as much clarity as 64mm burrs in the DF64 grinder. I think the wood lid is just for the bellows, plastic lid is for not using the bellows. Which is why it got stuck and broke (Instructions unclear!). It is pretty light / flimsy though. Survived one drop so far (onto my desk, not floor). Mine seemed to be able to adjust and grind coarsely enough for me. Although I think these are mainly supposed to be espresso grinders, Like the Specialita and I assume the XL it's pretty inconsistent when coarse.

@@BensCoffeeRants Just watched your videos. Let me thank you for taking one for the team!😆 It would appear that the "issues" are growing into something more unfavourable. Wired Gourmet, I stand corrected! Haha. The lid and bellows are disappointing. I can't say for sure whether I care about their existence in general. But that blockage and the difference in heat is definitely a loss for me. I would mostly grind for espresso, but I would like a machine of this price point (and one that advertises as such) to be able to at least do pour overs nicely. I saw another reviewer suggest it didn't fair well in terms of ease-of-use and comparison to the Specialita for brewing methods such as pour over. Sad. So, from what I gather, Ben, the Oro SD is just a slightly faster version of the Specialita - and more expensive, with greater overall complications? Would you argue the DF64 (perhaps with the SSP burs) is a better-performing machine? Despite it's (subjectively) less appealing aesthetic, it does seem like the DF64 wins. I would simply hate to purchase the Oro SD as my first "expensive" grinder when it is but a mere reflection of its predecessor, lacking in performance and use. I sincerely appreciate you coming back here to share your recent experience with me. It really helps steer my desire to make a seemingly impossible decision, haha!

@@justin5020 One reviewer did do a direct comparison and thought it was a bit of an improvement in taste vs the Specialita as it should be with larger, and similar designed burrs (I think they just scaled it up?) But I don't think either of those are great for coarser brew methods. I'd say it's basically a Specialita with larger burrs (definitely grinds FAST), seems like they just added some single dosing features they THOUGHT people would like added based on how they were already 3d printing / modifying their grinders (as well as trying to compete with Niche zero and maybe DF64). VS Niche Zero though the Workflow / ease of use and quietness is no match (niche wins I mean). Grind quality wise, I'm not sure. I think Niche and Eureka grinders such as this one, and Specialita and likely the XL (Haven't tried the XL, but I think it's mostly the same) I think all their grind quality is kinda similar in a way where you get a larger particle distribution, more fines create more body, but also limit the flavour clarity. Compared to even the Stock Italmill burr DF64 there's less body but noticeably more flavour clarity (on the DF64 I mean). SSP espresso burrs take that another step further (they work nicely for drip/brew coffee too) and then the Unimodal 'multipurpose' burrs are even more clarity and less body, which I prefer for brew coffee (aeropress is usually what I do) but it's kinda too clean for espresso for me, so for 'multipurpose' use, I'd probably say the SSP espresso burrs are best. DF64 has some issues / quirks as well but out of the box it's a great value. If you're just doing espresso I don't think you need SSP burrs, but a cheap 3d printed mod that holds the cup closer to the spout helps keep mess down when your using the bellows (The bellows on that one ACTUALLY works) but You DO NEED to use it, where you can probably get away with not using it on the Eureka's just fine (I tried it now, not using the bellows on the Oro SD, and it seems inconsistent on mine, I once put in 18g and got out 19g!) It just seems silly they'd design a blower hopper with the Oro Single doser that doesn't even work, unless it's just an issue with mine clogging up. Update: sent mine back to the store for repairs / experimenting on!

Very nice review :) One question was unanswered: How much retention does the Specialita have?

Why are there always so many coffee grinds inside Eureka grinders?
@usernameofutube
@usernameofutube Год назад
What are everyone thoughts on how the hopper connects to the machine. There is a notch to line up at the left (9 o'clock position) viewing from the top with the front facing you. The rubber seal was made to shape around it but no matter how low or hard I push the hopper down on my Oro Single, that small gap will leak air when compressing the bellow. There is actually more air coming out of that gap then the chute itself which is frustrating and defeats the design. When I asked for a return, the local store respond stating "The Eureka grinder is designed this way it does have a hole from which the air will escape in order not to vacuum seal with beans inside" and wants an 18% restocking fee. My personal dislike (knowing prior to purchase) is the dummy switch below the chute and dummy fork insert fitting carried from Eureka other grinders such as Specailità. The noise I can manage, better then my AP30.

So if I’m just using this for espresso do I need to fix anything with the nob lol

Good question! I thought it made better espresso after the adjustment, but it did work before. And maybe mine was just overlooked.

I have the same issue with retention: I ran about 4kg of different coffee from different roasters (light and medium roasts) through the SD since december 24, but every time it clogs the grinder and the blow of does not help at all. It just can't make enough pressure. I have to remove the hopper every time and use a proper uniersal aliexpress blow rubber - this blows out about 1,1-1,3 grams of stuck fines. I have much better experience with my Niche... Very disappointed in EUREKA..

Funny, the bellows is about the only part that works properly on mine, lol. I think they have inconsistency with assembly and parts suppliers maybe.
@SophiepTran

No wonder it shakes and wants to jump off the counter. The motor assembly isn't isolated properly from the chassis. There's a lot more components that seem to be an afterthought rather than a deliberate design choice. Is this an Italian machine by any chance?

As you cone across as a person with vast amounts of knowledge, I would like to reach out to you as I am not getting much help from Eureka Italy. My eureka Mignon MCI is 11yearsold and suddenly started clogging up. I at first thought it might be the burrs so change them but it's still doing it. I am at a,loss for solutions. I don't want to throw the machine away and furthermore don't know what to buy as a replacement. You speak highly of the Eureka Oro SD....

There is a little clump breaker at the top of the cute that might need cleaning. Otherwise, I can't say much without the machine in front of me.
