I have watched this video multiple times, and each times it causes tears for me. As a veteran of the United States Marine Corps I have been to the tomb in my Dress Blues and I was moved to tears there, just by simply being near the tomb. There is a video out about the Old Guard as well as many videos regarding the actual changing of the guard ceremony. They will show you just how disciplined and detail oriented they are. The Badge for being a tomb guard is the hardest one to obtain, and it also can be revoked for poor performance after leaving the Sentinel unit. You are held to a much higher standard than a normal soldier. Here is a video of the changing of the Guard Ceremony. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4utXb3auOew.html&pp=ygUxY2hhbmdpbmcgb2YgdGhlIGd1YXJkIHRvbWIgb2YgdGhlIHVua25vd24gc29sZGllcg%3D%3D Here is a video on the Old Guard itself. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QebrbHpjAac.html&pp=ygUNVGhlIE9sZCBHdWFyZA%3D%3D

Most difficult job to qualify for in the US military ranked: 1. Astronaut. 2. Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Yes, it is far easier to earn a Special Forces, Pathfinder, Sniper, or Ranger tab than it is to become an Honor Guard.
@m2hmghb
@m2hmghb 7 месяцев назад
To be fair there are far fewer Guards then special forces.
@MrVvulf
@MrVvulf 7 месяцев назад
@@m2hmghb There are physical (size) restrictions to become a Sentinel that cannot be overcome. If you're under 5'10" or over 6'4" (for men) you cannot join. If you only have 7% body fat,, but nature gave you a waistline over 32", you cannot become a Sentinel. You can still become Special Forces though. Your point is valid though, there are only so many slots available to join the Old Guard, and many more in Special Forces.

I went to see the changing of the guard ceremony almost 30 years ago. I can still remember it. Another interesting fact they did not mention in this video: the sentinels do not wear rank insignia while on duty, so that they will never outrank the unknowns in the tomb.

@@hollyharris707 Ms. Holly thank you for your post. I am so patriotic and my children think I'm weird. Being brought up in the 50's and 60's, we were taught to respect our country. Saying the Pledge of Allegiance every morning in class right after the first bell rang for school to begin. Of course, even back then we couldn't have any teachings of the history of USA. It's a good thing that I loved and still love to read a lot, as I filled in many blanks that weren't taught. I sometimes think on how sad the soldiers would be to see the way the country is now and how forgotten all their sacrifices were. Sad state of affairs. Andre should be as emotional as he wants, I don't mistake it for this younger generation and all they cry at now at all. Ms. Holly, have a great week and weekend. Blessing, peace and comfort for you and yours.

I am part of the younger generations and even I understand the struggle of being those who are in tune with their emotions. Society today makes us not acknowledge nor feel any emotions since they are percieved as weak. It makes those of us who are highly sensitive feel that our emotions are invalid and unnecessary. I know deep down, supressing emotions denies us of what makes us human. It's nice to know we are not alone, surviving in a cold, logic ruled world. A balance of logic and emotion are what makes a person whole. We need to honor our compassion because that is the greatest strength in this world. Compassion, no matter how small and "insignificant" it may seem, will create ripples that extend beyond what any human can see. Knowing you made that ripple that can change many lives in ways you may never know nor comprehend, is the most humbling yet beautiful thing a human being can do.

I remember a friend of mine was upset. Her boyfriend yelled at her kids for playing with his dog tags. She couldn't understand why it was so important to him. I had to explain to her the significance, which she had not considered before. If he had died during his service, those little metal tags are the only thing that would remain which were identifiable. That could likely have been the only way anyone would have known what became of him, or how he died, and that in turn could impact any death benefits, etc. How else do you know if a soldier is AWOL or in the meat-pile? Whether his death was honorable, or if he fled as a coward? Those tags are functionally his "soul" for lack of a better analogy. She started to get it. Then I had her listen to Motorhead's "1916" (Amazing song, and would be a great reaction video for you), and she just broke down. I don't think she had ever considered war from the perspective of a soldier. All she knew were war movies (which she didn't care for) and news headlines. Needless to say, she apologized for getting upset almost immediately after that. I still don't think she understood, but she at least realized she couldn't understand, but that didn't make it any less important.

You do not need to apologize for getting emotional on your first time learning about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I am an American and have watched various videos about the Sentinels and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - and the things they do to honor them and their memory. It does not get old, and the tears come every time. It is right that we honor them so - as in doing so we remember and honor all those who have died and were never identified and returned to their homes. Every family that does not know where their son lies - can mourn there at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier, and know - it is possible that their loved one is there before them, interred In the Tomb of the Unknown soldier. And somehow I believe it comforts them.

Tomb guards, the Sentinels, take their jobs very very seriously. It takes a lot to want to commit to that job, because it's volunteer only. It's probably one of the most difficult ones you can apply for in the Army. Once you spend enough time on duty, you get a special badge for it, and it's one of the rarest awards in the US military. They spend hours making sure their uniforms and equipment are perfect. They're the best of the best.

Thank you for paying such respect to the soldier and his tomb and giving this topic the reverence it deserves. This is an American memorial, but virtually every country has its own Unknown Soldier, and they are entitled to the respect of the country and the people they died for.

One thing not mentioned in the video is that the guards do not wear their ranks. so they never outrank the unknowns

If you don't get emotional watching this, everyone would seriously question your humanity. I've watched this same video sevral times and I still get emotional. In 1976 I was 10 years old and my family went to Washington DC for vacation (holiday). Despite the years since I vividly remember the changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The professionalism and dedication of the Soldiers who volunteer to serve as Guards is unmatched in any other human endeavor. If attending a Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier doesn’t make you proud to be an American (or human), nothing will.

Bringing your emotional energy for a situation like this is the emotion of utmost respect and nothing to be ashamed of or afraid to bring it to the video. You are human and it shows. Embrace it, there's a lot of so-called humans that have absolutely no respect or even care about what this represents.

When in the Navy, every mess deck on every ship has a small table that no one sits at, and it's for the POW/MIA soldiers. Now when I had my duty as 'mess deck master at arms', I noticed the seat, that clearly is labeled 'you are not forgotten', had the setting fine, the plate clean, but the lemon slice on the plate hadn't been changed in a WEEK and was dried out! I gathered all those MS together, bawled them out, and told them that EVERY MEAL this plate is to be refreshed - new plate, new utensils, new slice of lemon. They did it till my six months of that duty was over. I then left the ship to serve in another tour of duty elsewhere. I am betting they stopped doing it when i left.. but at least i respected those and I would do it repeatedly.

Do not feel bad for showing your emotions for this video, as I feel you have no emotion if you do not. I am a U.S. combat veteran, and it still hits me hard, both from Brothers that I knew and lost and those I did not know from years before. I always enjoy your reactions, whether they are somber as this one, or lighter and informative.

I wish we would treat our Veterans that are still living half as well as we treat the Unknown Soldier. I love the changing of the guard and the sentiment behind it. I have seen it twice and cried both times. But we really need to step up our game for the living.

There is a video you should look up. I don’t know what it’s called but it’s all about these guards and what standards they must live by and how hard it is to become one. It’s an extremely great honor to be selected.

This was a very moving video, and your response was evening MORE moving! Your response was amazing, and to see your understanding about those that gave the ultimate to fight for liberty is amazing. Also, I had watched your response to the US civil War 1&2 (Over simplified videos), which was very good too! Just to let you know - Arlington Cemetery was originally property of Robert E. Lee, the great Southern general from the Civil War. All his property was confiscated after the Civil war, and originally used just for Northern troops buials, but later converted to all Americans. So, this cemetery is thanks to Robert E. Lee fighting for the South! I have been to this cemetery. The most decorated US soldier in WW II (or probably ever) (Audie Murphy - died 1971) is buried here, right next to General Omar Bradley. I loved this video!

Notice that all except for the active sentinel is wearing rank insignia. The active sentinel does not display rank so that they do not outrank any of the soldiers interred there, whatever their ranks may have been. (There's more information about this on the official website).

Great reaction and by the way you never have to apologize or feel bad about getting emotional. That is part of being human and as someone who reacts to videos, people expect to see some emotion. It is part of why poelpe like seeing reaction videos. I think it would be a little strange if you watched this video and did feel at least a little emotional.

Your willingness to share your emotions and humanity is admirable and appreciated. I cannot watch any of the videos of the Tomb or of Arlington Cemetary without sobs. Some of those videos are less emotional but more informative. I also suggest you watch the story of Roy Benevides, a hero of the Viet Nam war. My husband had the honor of watching him receive the Medal of Honor. At his retirement after 26 years in the US Air Force, he told me that being allowed to attend that ceremony for Sgt. Benevides was the greatest privilege of his years of service.

I just came across this video; the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a moving, revered, beautiful, and hallowed place. It was a highlight of one of my trips to DC and the surrounding areas. Something lesser known in Fredericksburg, Virginia, south of Arlington, there is the Fredericksburg National Cemetery for Union veterans of the Civil War. They put sandbags with a candle in them by the graves on Memorial Day and light them in the evening so you can see the expanse of the cemetery lit up with sandbags, and they play Taps on the bugle throughout the night. That is a very moving experience, as well.

When I was a child, I went to visit Arlington and remember vividly watching the guard changing ceremony, it was July and blistering hot. The soldier was sweating buckets but kept a straight face and total calm. As an adult I stood and looked over the field of white crosses and stars, only place I’ve openly cried as an adult. I’m not a military person but it’s a powerful place. I bet it’s like that in every military cemetery. The weight of sacrifice.
