I watched it on television, it sounded bad.. i have no idea about vocals and music but you could tell that she was out of tune. I thought I was not hearing well but, then a lot of people said the same. I still love her music but no one can deny that her vocals sounded bad on that day
I'm her biggest fan ever, she's the Queen of everything but I also call a spade a spade and I must admit that she sounded very bad. I watched it on TV when it was aired and her singing was totally out of tune. She should take herself a bit more seriously as a singer and go back to train her voice once again. She should dedicate hours per day to her voice in order to maintain and preserve her voice decently.

Doesn't anyone think this is a weird performance to have for the European song contest? Especially with the monks, upside down cross, the innocent people in White with gas masks and then people falling to their deaths with"wake up" at the end! Is there no one thinking this is very weird. You need to search for the whole video.

Maybe something was done on purpose. I can imagine that some of the people involved might not have been too happy about the political statement (flag of Palestine) she was making. Hatari also sounded way off on TV and they also made several pro Palestine statements, even before their performance.
Incorrectly applied auto tune track. What's supposed to happen is the backing music having another vocal "track" in tune with the original vocals, that the auto tune then applies to Madonna's singing. Somehow it was programmed with the entire track being too low. Did you notice in the live broadcast video that every single note seems to be a little too deep? Statistically, there's no way she missed EVERY note by the same amount (though she does audibly miss a little bit here), so it's something wrong with the auto tune, and that got corrected on the version on her channel
They used auto-tune on the fly for the broadcast and it failed to pitch-correct her properly. Here you can hear that no auto-tune was actually used in the venue.

Yes - her vocals were shocking here (and I am a massive Madonna fan). But she can still sing very very well if you look at her recent tour and past performances. Evita is a prime example, ray of light used no auto tune and her performance of sooner or later is impeccable.
Honestly and sadly in the same time she sounds worse by the day.. It s a totally different scenario to record in a studio, where you record take after take, with your vocal coach by your side and after that having those vocals tuned are re tuned, and re re tuned one more time, and so on until your voice hits every single note corre tly. And it s a totally different scenario singing live - well some sort of live - with the auto tune set somehow on the entire track instead of her voice
Nothing, Areta was much older than Madonna and sang very well. She was most likely just sick with the flu, or autorune is hitting the wrong grades, as happened with Justin.

In December, I've seen Paul McCartney live - the guy's 76 and has been performing for over 50 years now, where I guess the Beatles era was much more wasting for him than any part of Madonna's career. The man sung and played for 3 hours without taking a break to take a sip of water. Oh man I love and appreciate Madonna, but it's talent and hard work which makes your show great, not the creation. Even after 30 or so years.

She couldn't sing when she was younger, so I don't think anyone should expect her to suddenly and magically develop great vocal skills at her advanced age. Madonna really never had much talent in terms of singing, dancing or acting. She was pretty bad at all three. However, Madonna has always been brilliant at marketing and re-branding herself. She truly is a genius when it comes to self-promotion. No one does it better than Madonna. And her edgy, pushing the boundaries shtick was the model that people like Lady Gaga continue to emulate to this very day. But, anyone who thinks that Madonna actually has musical ability isn't being honest and has lost the ability to see Madonna objectively because they are fan-girling or fan-boying too much. Were her songs great? Sure, she had some of the best songwriters like Babyface writing for her. But they would have been better songs if someone else sung them. You know, someone who could actually sing.
Even at the super bowl performance I got a weird vibe from the theatrics and stage mechanics when she played the prayer song there too, like the lyrics even too she says she “closes her eyes and she’s falling” or something to that affect, and like I know she meant for it to be a cool thing probably but when she says at the end (in the Super Bowl performance) “it feels like home” and then goes back down into the stage I got an eerie feeling from that too
the song was RE ARRANGED.... Actually she sounded perfectly fine here. I don't understand why it sounded different live on telly that night. So it's absolutely something to do with the technician side of it. She really sounded fine on this audience recording.

I think this was intentional? I mean the whole presentation of her in black with the monks stealing her show: I understood that as symbolizing the triumph of faith over idolisation. Her voice breaking down over the course of the show until she completely collapses on the flow while monks keep singing - it's all a fitting concept and if any major star would intentionally sing "badly" to create an impression, i would think it's Madonna. To me, this show was one of the most powerful acts i've seen in a long time and it gave me goose-bumps.

I was at a "live" concert in 1984. It was all playback. She CAN NOT sing live. She looks good but she never had a good voice. Now she had to sing live for the first time and it was 🤢🤢🤢🤢

Guys it sounded worse on tv because it was autotuned lively(and autotuning a performance live on tv is a very risky move and can make the vocals worse then they really are)

I've been watching on venue videos of this performance because everyone was saying she was awful but seriously, ppl only like hating on her. This is not bad and u guys stop acting like u have a clue about singing or vocal technique, u r just haters not profesional singers
To me this 'version' just seemed too down-beat, dull & slow. I can understand wanting to give something else in this performance, but 'Like A Prayer' (to my ear), works best as a rousing, building, gospel tinged anthem and sung as such. Was it in a different key not really best suited to her voice? A bit of a midded opportunity really, but I don't understand all the fuss. Still love her.

It is not that she is singing that bad. The truth is that her sound engineer is using Live Autotune on her vocals(you can notice if you listen carefully to those little sounds and articulations from the artifact) BUT seems like he missed the key and thats why the software is trying to correct her notes in a completely different place, and thats why it sounds so so so bad. This just left me thinking now that shes so used to sing live with autotune, but in this case, we were able to notice due to that mistake from her live sound team
Ya'll don't understand what an icon this woman is. So what if she wasn't able to vocally achieve what she could before? After 30 years of going against the grain, changing generations and challenging and shaping public perceptions, we should be grateful that we in this current time still have icons like her still up and performing and bringing us more art at the age of 60! If you can sing acapella, you can sing also to a beat. And if you really can sing, you can even adjust your notes to a different pitch or different notes.
