This Rivian EV Cold Weather Range Test will reveal the truth about taking long road trips in an EV in very cold temps. In this video we embark on a 500 mile road trip from Mount Airy, MD to Portsmouth, NH. We also cross into Maine to top off our charge at the end. We examine pre conditioning the battery and how that impacts the range across the road trip in sub freezing temperatures. We also discuss the many claims by the mainstream news media that EV range is terrible in cold weather. We charge at three different charging networks including Tesla, EVgo, and Electrify America. Can the Rivian R1T perform? Come along with us on this frigid road trip to find out the truth!

@@ElectrifiedOutdoors Thank you! I'm loving the EV life (locally) but I must admit we are cheating a little because sometimes we take our Chevy Impala (ICE) on long road trips. We have to drive to take short cuts a lot thru WV a lot to see family in Ohio and western PA coming from western North Carolina. Along the I-95 corridor in VA, NC and SC we have many fast chargers so we can take the Rivian easy.

I did not precondition for the return trip. Per ElectriFi here are the stats for return trip with a cold soaked battery and no preconditioning. What do you guys/gals think of the stats for the return trip vs the trip up where I achieved 1.99 mi per kwh? Total Miles Driven 510.11 Time Driven 7 Hours 57 Minutes kWh Used 274.13 kWh 1.862 Mi per Kwh Average Temp 17.31 F

The range calculated based on efficiency is a good approximation however you do have to account for uphill climb , head wind etc depending on your route . Nice video.
@ElectrifiedOutdoors
@ElectrifiedOutdoors 5 месяцев назад
Great point! Yes, this is true and Rivian also shows you the last 15 minutes efficiency in the driver's display. So if you use that method to calculate the range, You should also make adjustments frequently. And this scenarios that you point out where there's a lot of elevation change or wind. Your efficiency will likely go down quite a bit.

i think cold weather vs battery life(range) only happen when battery sits out in cold for long time witout draining/charging. if u keep using it or charging it, the battery itself heats up and stay in optimum temperature, so it pretty much just the same as summer, except little extra heating drain. so what u tested doesnt help ppl understand where the complain is coming from. and same like any vehicle, EV with all season tire get stuck in heavy snow and it gets u nowhere. so i feel most ppl who complain about winter battery range = short trips, car sits in cold for long time in between uses, and/or no snowtire in snowy condition.

Good points. What I am trying to show in the video is that cold weather does not necessarily mean horrible range. Like you say I think a lot of it is not knowing the things to do when temps are really low to keep the truck happy. I agree that leaving the EV outside, unplugged, for a long period of time (cold soaking) is the worst case scenario. If your driving short distances its not a big deal but if your driving long distances preconditioning is a must in the cold temps.

i think EV is best used as delivery vehicle or taxi where u constantly using the vehicle. daily commuter dont get money worth back from overpriced EV. in canada i would rather buy a gas vehicle and use that 10-20k CAD saving on gas.

@@ElectrifiedOutdoors I noticed the steering wheel was positioned just so with the camera angle 😅. That's seems like great efficiency for highway speed like that. My recent winter drives were also windy so efficiency tanked.
@ElectrifiedOutdoors

Yes I thought it was really good. I probably could have done quite a bit better if I had kept it at or below 70. In deal conditions and slower speeds I can get about 2.5 mi per kwh in conserve. To get 2mi per kwh at those speeds at those temps IMO is really good.

i would say this if i had the money i would definitely buy a rivian for around town use not convinced on long travel yet

I took my Rivian R1S from MN to Key West. I found that my bladder lasted less than the range in the vehicle. I’d wake up in the morning with a 300 mile range, stopped 1 time to charge for a half hour and go another 200 miles. I could do 1 more stop at most but then just called it day. The trip was so enjoyable, I”m doing a trip to the west coast in it this Spring.

HAHA I dont understand what the main stream media is doing or why. I have an R1S and I dont have much of an issue when its below freezing. I actually have an issue when it's really hot. The fan turns on, is loud and my range is iffy . (I did some driving to and from Las Vegas last year).

We did some towing when it was really hot. In extreme heat range takes a hit as well. Have to keep battery, motors, and cabin cool. Once you own an EV and get to know it there is no range anxiety and you know what to expect when there are extreme temps. The news media is just playing on people's fears in order to get clicks and sell ad space.

In a normal car, a trip like this would’ve taken between 6.5 to 8 hours, depending on traffic. So if you leave at 6am on a Saturday, you should arrive by 2:30-4:30pm. In an EV, it will take you over a day 😂. That’s completely insane, and a giant step backwards. I will never sell my normal car.

Hi Jeff, in an EV it takes an extra hour. We would have spent that time eating and going to the bathroom anyway. Aside from road trips I never have to go to a gas station which saves a ton of time. I always need gas at the most inconvenient times too. With an EV it charges while I sleep and every morning I have a "full tank". I'll keep my EV 😀

@@ElectrifiedOutdoors How long was your trip from MD to NH? Edit: An extra hour on a trip isn’t worth it to me. Time = money.
@ElectrifiedOutdoors
@ElectrifiedOutdoors 5 месяцев назад
It's an 8 hour trip with no stops. There was about an hour to an hour and 15 charging on this trip due to the one charger being slow and leaving that one for a faster charger. Normally there would only be two stops. It took us 10 hours total ... Was a bad accident that snarled traffic... Pickup truck flipped over on its side.

I’ve owned my Rivian R1S since October 2022. I have over 32,000 miles on it. The last time I used a public charger was during my trip from MN to Key West FL April 2021. I’ve never had to get the oil changed in it. When was the last time you had to go out of your way to go to a gas station. When was the last time you got the oil changed? How many miles do you think you’ll go before you have to go get the break pads swapped out? My guess for the R1S is 150,000 miles. What was the drivetrain warranty on your “normal” car? My Rivian came with 175,000 drivetrain warranty, which includes the battery.

Cold weather driving in an EV requires an owner that understands the vehicles and how to properly plan a trip. Which isn't really any different than planning a trip in warmer weather - all you're changing is you're planning for shorter distances between stops but the same "thought" you'd put into a several hundred mile trip in summer is the same you'd do in the winter. If you understand battery temp mgt, there's literally nothing to see here. I agree, there's a very recent negative push against EVs because that get clicks, but once you get below the surface, and if you actually understand how your vehicle works, there's nothing to these stories beyond the clickbait headline. I'll be doing 300+ miles soon - have made the trip before in cold weather, and it's no drama. Biggest drama is charging etiquette and people who have vehicles that max out at 100kw or less taking up all the 350kw stalls... :D But that's driven by the same problem - owners that can't be bothered to understand anything about their vehicles. You can't fix stupid you can only work around it.

@@ElectrifiedOutdoors -5 degrees Celsius is hardly the arctic. The Canadian car industry is in panic mode over EV's not working well or at all. You lose 50% of charge after -10 degrees Celsius. What's your opinion?
@ElectrifiedOutdoors
@ElectrifiedOutdoors 5 месяцев назад
@TomTom-pv2ig They definitely lose range. I think it depends on what EV you have. How much range is lost. The Rivian when you precondition the battery does not lose a ton of range. You have to remember that for the Rivian, you're only carrying the equivalent energy of about 4 and 1/2 gallons of gasoline. The rated range of my R1T is 328 mi at 2 mi per kilowatt hour and temperature is well below freezing. I'm still getting 80% of the rated range. And most EVs don't even get anywhere near the rated range Even an ideal conditions. So the Rivian did really really good in my opinion. -10F would drop efficiency more. Per vehicle to not charge it would have to sit and get cold soaked at those temps for significant period of time. I still tell anyone that doesn't have a place to plug in their EV either at home or at at work. Probably not a good idea to get EV. As far as all the news stories, it's all sensationalism IMO. There's also a lack of education on how to handle EVs in cold temperatures.
